Gordon Banton was born on July 5, 1919 and raised in St. Jones Without. His parents were Caleb and Mary Anne (Green) Banton. He was raised in a fishing family and spent his entire life involved in the fishery. One of the biggest changes in his life occurred when the community of St. Jones Without was abandon in the 1950s by the residence themselves. This was before the resettlement days in the 1960s. He moved his family to Winterton and spent the rest of his working years in the fishery. His memory was an asset that permitted a number of individuals to record the history of St. Jones Without. He worked with Marie Cook and helped identify the location of houses and other buildings in her painting of St. Jones Without. He passed away on April 13, 2014 at Carbonear Hospital. He was 94 years old.
The attached item about Gordon was printed in the publication Hunting and Fishing in Newfoundland: Changing with the Times, researched and written by Joanne Morgan, sponsored by the Trinity Placentia Development Association, 2000.
