Cadets 001 Cadets win Bronze at national biathlon. By Ferne Foley.

The Royal Oak Army Cadet Corps No. 2997 biathlon ski team received bronze medals at the Cadet national Biathlon meet held at Valcartier, Quebec, Feb. 23 to Mar. 3. The team beat out some strong competition earlier in the year at Stephenville to represent Newfoundland and travel to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, for the regionals. The regionals were held on the site of the Canada Winter Games. The national Cadet championships saw teams from all provinces and territories, with the strongest teams from Ontario and Quebec. The week consisted of three types of races, the 7.5 km individual race, a 7.5 km relay race, and a 10 km patrol race where racers carried a 10-pound pack on their back. The No. 2997 biathlon team placed 5th in the individual race, 4th in the relay race and 3rd in the patrol race.Their coach, Capt. Lee Drover, was very proud of his team, especially since they are all new members this year.Team members were Cadet Commanding Officer, C/Capt. Ian Lambert, the Deputy Commanding Office, C/Corporal Chad Spurrell, C/Major Michael Spurrell, and Cadet Delilah Soper, the youngest team member. This is the second consecutive year that the No. 2997 represented Newfoundland at the national biathlon ski championships. This past year the Corps has completed a ski trail and log cabin for their training site. The cadets say they are grateful for their parents for their support.
