Heritage Fair / Annual General Meeting

Southwest Arm Historical Society hosted another successful Heritage Fair on September 12, at 50+ Club in Hillview. Between70- 80 people attended. There were displays of artifacts between 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm with the majority of visitors arriving around 4:00 pm.

The items displayed from our past often creates discussions between the owners and the people viewing the items. People reflect on memories using these items or it creates discussion about family members who were from a certain community in Random where these items had been used.

At 5:00 pm people enjoyed soup, sandwiches and of course followed by desserts/coffee/tea.

Around 6:30, guests were entertained by local talent and the main event at 7:00 pm, the square dance was performed for the next two hours. I must admit, that I am too young (or at least I think I am) to recall the square dances that were performed years ago but it appears the performers from the communities of St. Jones Within, Hatchet Cove and Hillview have not lost a beat. I also realize that there were performers from other parts of Southwest Arm that deserve credit. I truly enjoyed watching the performance and the dancers were certainly burning off the calories from their meal. Congratulations to the entertainers/performers on a job well done.

The Southwest Arm Historical Society has been in existence for two years and will host its first Annual General Meeting on September 28. See attached Agenda.

If you want to see what has been accomplished in such a short period of time and what the plans are for the next two years, then come along and observe, contribute, and participate in our meeting at Lion’s Club in Hodge’s Cove.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the committee who have devoted numerous hours collecting, writing, posting and continue researching our history. It requires commitment and dedication to carry out such an enormous task. It will require years to complete and the contributions by you the residence/former residence of Southwest Arm communities to complete. It is hoped that this site can be used by research and schools to help further understand and educate people about our region of this province.

If you are unable to serve on our committee for the next two years, remember that you still can contribute by sending us information that may include photos, articles, family trees, images of artifacts used by your ancestors, and any item that you would like for us to consider to be included on our site. It is only with the cooperative effort that we can build a site that will make future generations proud because collectively, we preserved the history of Southwest Arm for years to come.
