Seafood + Sun = Fun

Seafood plus sun equalled fun on August 4, at the 5th annual Seafood Festival.

North West Brook was the setting for this year’s event which featured activities for all ages, educational displays and some special visitors. Among the guests were Lightening Bug. mascot of Newfoundland Light and Power; Dick Reeves of VOCM who emceed; and Fred Lee who provided musical entertainment.

Two other special guests were Corporal Cyr and his dog Pax of the RCMP, who are both stationed at Gander.

 

Pax was put through his paces by his master and showed the crowd how he is well-trained to apprehend criminals and follow his master's commands.

There was much to see and do at this year’s festival. There were games of chance and horse rides, a demonstration booth by Newfoundland Power and a craft booth by Nanny Higgins Crafts.

Along with the games there were prizes.

Winners of the best decorated bike contest were Mike Soper, 12 and over category; and Dawn Soper, 1st, April Bursey, 2nd and Laurie Soper 3rd in the 6-11 category.

 

Aubrey Barrett won the prize for the best clown costume; and Steve and Mary [Susie] Robbins were honored as the oldest couple at the festival and won a prize of dinner for two at a local restaurant.

Of course the seafood would not be complete without seafood, and that there was plenty. Patrons had a chance to sample cultivated blue mussels, lobster, fish and brewis, salmon, scallops, cod tongues, and other delicious deserts prepared by the Anglican and United Church women’s groups from Hatchet Cove.

The Seafood Festival ended with a dance at the Country Lounge in Hillview, with Fred Lee providing the music.

The event was organized by the Southwest Arm Development Association. A spokesman for the group said they are grateful to the local businesses and residents who participated to make the day a success.
