The 26 from the Southwest Arm

The stories behind the photos of the First World War vets

Reprinted from The Packet, November 15, 2016

At the ceremony at Southwest Arm Academy, Little Heart’s Ease, on Nov. 10 to unveil the banners to tell the stories of veterans of the First World War, the audience was presented with mini biographies of each veteran.

Over the course of almost two years, Lester Green of the Southwest Arm Historical Society, sought out the information on each veteran. He obtained information from military sources, provincial archives and family members themselves — gradually building a more detailed picture of the military service of these 26 men.

Over the past year, Green — in collaboration with The Packet — published these stories weekly in the local newspaper and online.
