Captain Ralp Smith_Seal Hunt_Western Star_ Mar 03, 1949 “Sealers” Left St. John’s SaturdaySt. John’s (From our correspondent) — Saturday morning the first of the sealers to prosecute the sealing voyage for 1949 sailed from St. John’s. In all about twenty five vessels will prosecute the fishery including nine Norwegian vessels and seven which were outfitted at Halifax, but crewed mostly by Newfoundlanders. The Newfoundland vessels are: Eagle, Capt. Charles Kean; Terra Nova, Capt. Wilfred Barbour; Lady MacDonald, Capt. Ralph Smith; Linda May, Capt. Les Windsor; Wimoda, Capt. Ben Andrews; Norma L. Conrad, Capt. Peter Troke; Mary Ruth, Capt. Cecil Stockley; Codroy, Capt Jim Gillett; Newfoundlander, Capt John Blackmore; Artie Prowler, Capt W. C. Winsor.

The ships cleared from Halifax are: Lady Cecil, Capt. Stan Barbour; Port of Beaumont, Capt Frank Shaw; Alfred and Emily, Capt. Rex Old ford; also the vessels Notre Dame, Illinois, Fordham and Inverleigh. The Captain of the last mentioned is Chesley Anderson. The balance of the fleet are Norwegian vessels which are reported to be In Newfoundland waters before the first of March.
