Firm to Operate Four Sealing Ships
Bowring Brothers Ltd., St. John’s, will send four vessels to the seal fishery this spring. S.S. Eagle, in charge of Captain Charles Kean, and Captain Abraham Kean second officer; the motor vessel Terra Nova, with Captain Wilfred Barbour, and second officer W. Barbour; the motor vessel Codroy will have as Captain Saul White and John White second in command; and the motor vessel Lady Mac Donald, in charge of Captain Ralph Smith and Augustus Carter chief officer.

Seventeen Ships to Prosecute 1948 Seal Fishery
Locally Owned Craft Sailed from St. John’s Last Week
Seventeen Newfoundland vessels and seven Canadian vessels will prosecute the sealfishery this Spring. The Canadian register ships are the North Voyageur and Magdalen, owned by Blais & Company of Montreal; Bronco, owned by the Arctic Whaling & Sealing Company; the Lady Cecil, owned by Captain Castionquay, and three other ships, Illinois, Fordham and Notre Dame. These three ships are backed by a Captain Carleson of Halifax.
These three ships, together with the Bronco, are expected to arrive from Halifax in the very near future. The Illinois, Fordham and Notre Dame will be in charge of Norweign captains but will carry Newfoundland crews. The young Norwegian skipper, Captain O. Brandel, who commanded the S. S. Bronco last spring, will be her skipper again this year. The Bronco is represented in St. John’s by W. H. Ewing & Sons.
