001 Way back, in the mists of time, of necessity our forebears needed to re-sole items of well-worn leather footwear for family members. From pieces of leather, bought at the local store or elsewhere, “taps” were cut and trimmed with a sharp knife to fit the bottom of the boot or shoe, including the heel. The piece of footwear was turned upside down and placed on one of the ‘feet’, depending on the most appropriate size. It was attached with glue and using a small hammer to insert a number of “brads”, small nails designed for that purpose. Inside the boot, the pointed ends of the brads were then “clented”, i.e., the sharp ends dulled so as not to be ‘stabby’ to the feet.Iron Last, originally owned by Brown’s of N. W. Brook, donated to SWAH Society by Bill Baldwin
