Obituaries – 2023

AVERY, Hayward – It is with profound sadness, much love, and deep sorrow, that the family of Hayward Avery announce his peaceful passing at the G.B. memorial Hospital August 19, 2023 at the age of 89 years. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 63 years Nina. Children: Deborah (Rod), Shawn (Tina), and Stephanie (Darrin).Grandchildren: Renee (Brandon), Rebecca (Phillip), Devin (Megan), Dillon (Brittany), Steven (Rebecca), and Haylee (Anna), Great-grandchildren: Tyler, Jaxson, Sophia, Maci, Benjamin, and Blakely, sisters: Melvie (William), Reta, Florence, and Claribel (Dale), Brothers: Herbert (Frances) and Raymond; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and relatives, together with many friends. Hayward is predeceased by his Parents James and Elsie Avery (nee Spurrell), his stillborn son Baby Avery, brother -in-laws Fred Holloway, George Janes, and Stephen Lambert. Hayward was born in Southport, Trinity Bay, and spent his lifetime as a fisherman, with a soulful connection to the sea. His close family ties and his love for the ocean kept him deeply committed to his small community, a place where he was known for his expertise as a fisherman and all things fishery. There was no landmark in the area, above water, or below, he did not know. In retirement he moved from the ocean unto the land, deciding to take up hobby farming. It was a second occupation in which he excelled, growing potatoes, grapes, apples, cantaloupe, tomatoes, cabbage and much more. Friends and relatives who visited were always welcomed with a stroll through his lush gardens and abundant greenhouse. Hayward’s passion in later years was the recreational fishery; it was another opportunity to spend time with family and loved ones. It was off the cliffs of Wester’ Head he watched the eagles soar while he felt the cool ocean breezes. It was from the shores of Wester’ Head he tasted the salty waves and wiped the sea from his cheeks. During those voyages his children were shown the life of a fisherman; precious moments and valued memories with a father – never to be forgotten. He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed. Resting at Fewer’s Funeral Home, Little Heart’s Ease on Monday, August 21, 2023 from 7-9 P.M.  and Tuesday, August  22, 2023 from 2-4 & 7-9 P.M.  Funeral service to take place from the United Church, Little Heart’s Ease on Wednesday, August 23, 2023 at 2:00 P.M. LAMBERT, Mary Ellen (nee Hickey) – Passed peacefully away surrounded by family at St. Patrick’s Mercy Home, St. John’s on Friday, November 17, 2023, Mary Ellen Lambert of Sunnyside, age 76 years.  Predeceased by her husband Raymond; parents Lucy and Anthony Hickey; parents-in-law Noah and Rachel Lambert; brothers Henry, John and Albert; brother-in-law Kevin Lambert.  Left to mourn with very fond and loving memories her children Dino (Darlene), Dion (Christine), Raylene (Bill) and Sheldon (Katie); grandchildren Ryan, Nathan (Abby), Matthew, Caitlin, Hunter and Liam; sisters Frances (Gordon), Mercedes (Larry), Jane Ann (Derek) and Liz (Greg); brother Anthony (Elsie); sisters-in-law Gladys, Ann, Hilda (Dave), Shirley, Christine, Clara, Marilyn and Rosemary (Eric); brother-in-law Sherwin (Valerie); special friend Tilly Benson and a large number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  Resting at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Sunnyside.  Visitation on Monday, November 21, 2023 from 5 – 9 p.m. Funeral service taking place at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 from St. Andrew’s Anglican Church Sunnyside with interment to follow at the Anglican Cemetery, Sunnyside.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society.  In keeping with her vibrant nature, we the family ask those attending the service to wear bright colors if they are able to, as a tribute to Mary. To say Mary was one of a kind is an understatement. She leaves behind a legacy of many stories of generosity and humour. Mary was always there with a helping hand or to lift the spirits of a friend. She undoubtedly had a very giving soul. She lived to make others laugh by either embarrassing herself, them or more and once, both.  Anything for a laugh. She was a strong independent woman who loved to share love of life with others. Mary loved bright vibrant colours. We like to think they matched her personality. If anyone would like to wear something bright in her honour, we’re sure she would smile upon you. After almost 14 years Mary is now reunited with the love of her life, Raymond. They loved their time together at the cabin. They made many memories with friends there. They are now catching up on lost time. (Reprinted from Fewer’s Funeral Home website.)
