STOYLES, RAY – It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Ray Stoyles on February 15th, 2026, at the age of 95. Born to James and Blanche Stoyles of Northern Bight, Ray spent the majority of his life in St. John’s, with his wife of 67 years, Lillian Marshall of Woody Island. Predeceased by his parents, wife Lillian, son Rick and siblings, Lester, Leonie, Marguerite and Alfred. His memory lives on through his sister Ruth, brother in law Eric Courtney, sister in law Bernice Marshall, son Jim (Katrina), grandchildren Allison, Alexander, James, and their mother Glenda, daughter in law Carol and grandson Joshua, and his great grandchildren James, Max, Michael, Madison and Ava. He leaves being a large extended family that will remember many laughs and wonderful times spent together in his favorite place – at his cabin in Goobies. Ray spent his career working as an engineer with CN Railway. His work gave him great purpose and pride, and he spoke often and fondly of his time on the railroad and the colleagues he worked alongside. He was honored to take part in the final train run across Newfoundland before the railway closed in 1989. In retirement, Ray became a devoted grandfather. Each day, he picked his grandchildren up from school to share a homemade lunch and was always there waiting when the school bell rang at the end of the day. There was never a day he was late and never a day he missed pickup. His unwavering commitment was his way of showing love and care for his family, and we will forever be grateful for the time, dedication, and stability he gave during those formative years. Ray loved the country and spent much of his life at his cabin in Goobies. He could often be found fishing, hunting, working on one of his many machines, or enjoying a game of cards. He especially loved traveling through the open country on his skidoo, trike, or Argo. His family holds many fond memories of packing up the Argo and heading across the muddy bogs for a day trip and cook up together. Ray lived independently  for 95 years and was cooking his own meals right up until the week he passed — exactly the way he wanted it. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks and heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and nurses at the Health Sciences Centre for the exceptional care and compassion shown in his final days. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity or foundation of one’s choice. You’re some cooker, Poppy.
