She will also be dearly missed by her nephew Bruce who was like a son to her and very special chosen family, Cindy and Tony, as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews and relatives, together with many friends. She is also survived by her large extended Johnson family on the Northern Peninsula. Nina was born on April 18, 1940, in Fox Harbour, Labrador and moved to Southport at the age of two, where she was known for her kindness, generosity, Christian, and community spirit. She lived a life filled with love for her family and friends. She especially enjoyed having lots of visitors and will be remembered forever for her practice of Christian principle by giving with a kind heart expecting nothing in return knowing it is better to give than receive. Nina was a woman of quiet strength, kindness, and unwavering generosity. Her home was always open, and nowhere was that more evident than in her cherished Sunday dinners. She took great joy in having a “cooked dinner” ready every Sunday, with enough food to welcome anyone who happened to stop by. Whether family, friends, or unexpected guests, no one ever left her table hungry. Those Sunday dinners were more than meals—they were moments of connection, laughter, and love that will be deeply missed. Resting at Bethel United Church, with visitation on Sunday April 12 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will take place on Monday, April 13 at 1 PM at the Bethel United Church in Little Heart’s Ease. Interment to follow at the Southport United Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Nina’s memory may be made to the SGB Cemetery Trustees Cemetery Fund. (The United Church Cemetery). Nina’s family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the nurses at the G.B. Cross Hospital and her doctor, Jenna Paul, for their help and compassion during Nina’s Palliative care and to the exceptional staff at Cozy Quarters where she spent the last year and half of her life. Our deepest thanks to the Southwest Arm Fire Department for their quick response and the care and kindness they showed while assisting Mom at home. Your support will not be forgotten. Finally, a big heartfelt thank you to her special friend Marion Foote at Cozy Quarters whose kindness and constant care helped ensure Mom was safe and well looked after. Your presence brought comfort not only to her, but to all of us. Nina will be forever loved and deeply missed. (Reprinted from Fewer’s Funeral Home website)

BALSOM, Rockwell Melville George – “Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth and danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings…” Excerpted from HIGH FLIGHT by John Gillespie Magee, Jr. Rockwell Melville George Balsom slipped away on March 31, 2026 at Albert O’Mahoney Memorial Manor, Clarenville, after a life of biblical duration: three score and ten. Rockwell, or more familiarly Rock or Rocky, has indeed departed this earthly realm on his final flight to his eternity in the cosmos. Rocky was the youngest child of William H. Balsom and Effie J. Balsom, born at Come By Chance on January 18, 1956. A graduate of Horwood High, he pursued post-secondary studies at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Queens University, Kingston, ON. During his early years after graduation, he was employed in municipal planning, by the St John’s Metropolitan Board and the City of St. John’s. He also worked casually in the St. John’s night club scene, often as a bartender. He was known to have a style and presence that was his own, and he surely enjoyed the downtown night life. Rocky began his grand scale adventures with a new employment direction. He embarked on a world tour of sorts, supported by teaching jobs in many exotic and sometimes less exotic locations. His first teaching job enabled him to learn about and sample the lifestyle and culture of South Korea. He went next to the Hidden Kingdom which we know today as China. After employment in a number of different cities and extensive personal travel in Asia and Africa, Rocky looked closely at other destinations in Africa and the Middle East. His final employment took him again to Asia, this time to Mandalay, Myanmar. His service in Myanmar was cut short by the COVID pandemic, and he returned to what he called affectionately “the homeland”, the cove in Trinity Bay. After a medical diagnosis identifying critical neurological issues, Rocky was placed at the O’Mahoney Manor in Clarenville. His time at the Manor beginning in Fall 2024 was sometimes tumultuous and difficult but in spite of himself, he was both well cared for and liked by staff at the Manor. They served him well, even when he was difficult. And now, he has left us all forever… Many people touched Rocky’s life as did he touch many. His special friend, Wendy Mugford, aided and abetted him in his great adventures and sometimes accompanied him as well. Tracey-Lee helped him get out of travel crises here and there as needed. And his Favourite Nephew, Edgar Balsom, was an anchor to him in his daily life, upon his return to reside in Clarenville. During his stay at G B Cross Memorial Hospital, prior to his transfer to O’Mahoney Manor, Rocky was generally a usual and respected part of daily life there. A life is not a life without affecting many, sometimes obviously sometimes unknowingly. Go well into that dark night brave soul. Do I hear music? Is that Queen? What is that tune! It’s “Another one bites the dust”. As per Rocky’s wishes, cremation is planned and there will be no service to follow. Donations in Rocky’s memory may be made to the Salvation Army Community Church, Clarenville, NL A5A 4C4.

STOYLES, RAY – It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Ray Stoyles on February 15th, 2026, at the age of 95. Born to James and Blanche Stoyles of Northern Bight, Ray spent the majority of his life in St. John’s, with his wife of 67 years, Lillian Marshall of Woody Island. He leaves being a large extended family that will remember many laughs and wonderful times spent together in his favorite place – at his cabin in Goobies. Ray spent his career working as an engineer with CN Railway. His work gave him great purpose and pride, and he spoke often and fondly of his time on the railroad and the colleagues he worked alongside. He was honored to take part in the final train run across Newfoundland before the railway closed in 1989. In retirement, Ray became a devoted grandfather. Each day, he picked his grandchildren up from school to share a homemade lunch and was always there waiting when the school bell rang at the end of the day. There was never a day he was late and never a day he missed pickup. His unwavering commitment was his way of showing love and care for his family, and we will forever be grateful for the time, dedication, and stability he gave during those formative years. Ray loved the country and spent much of his life at his cabin in Goobies. He could often be found fishing, hunting, working on one of his many machines, or enjoying a game of cards. He especially loved traveling through the open country on his skidoo, trike, or Argo. His family holds many fond memories of packing up the Argo and heading across the muddy bogs for a day trip and cook up together. Ray lived independently for 95 years and was cooking his own meals right up until the week he passed — exactly the way he wanted it. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks and heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and nurses at the Health Sciences Centre for the exceptional care and compassion shown in his final days. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity or foundation of one’s choice. You’re some cooker, Poppy.
