Dear Sir,—As I am of the opinion, your readers would like to know how we are progressing here, and particularly about the seals. I send you the following : The old seals were very numerous in Random, until Wednesday, 7th, as the bay got full of ice. A great many have been killed with the gun, among which were a number of breeding seals, the young taken out of them, within a very few days of bringing their young forward.
Two very fine ice houses have been built: one by Mr. Edward Seward. Fox Harbor, and the other by Mr. Samuel Martin; Mr. John Newton and Thomas arc building two large houses in Deer Harbor; Mr. B. Smyth is building a splendid house in Gooseberry Cove ; Mr. Richard Seward has enlarged his dwelling house. Mr. Clinch had his saw-mill burned a few nights ago and everything he possessed. John James and Daniel Shaw have six thousand logs, waiting for the first water to commence sawing. Mr. Martin (schoolmaster), had a narrow escape while skating on the ice a few days ago; after being in the water a long time he was rescued by two young girls. William Seward caught fourteen foxes the winter. Trusting that I have not trespassed on your valuable space, Mr. Editor, I remain, dear sir, yours sincerely, RESIDENT

Dear Sir, – You will grant me a great favor if you allow me a little space in the columns of your most valuable paper to publish a few cursory items, concerning the disadvantage we are laboring under during the winter months with regard to mails. We have no Way Office here, not within six miles of us. The mail men travel through this place; and its no matter what you are employed at, you have to leave all and run to the Way Office; if you are not there during the short interval while the mail men are taking some refreshment, your letter has to stay there for the next forthnight; and then its taken to Northern Bight, where it has to remain another forthnight, as the mail men go from Northern Bight before our mail reaches there. Its out of the question for mail men from Northern Bight Io bring the mail. Why not a mail man from his place take the mail to Northern Bight a day or two before it arrives there, and bring our mail to us. I hope this matter will be taken into consideration and give us FAIR PLAY.

A MAN FOUND DROWNED.
SUICIDE FROM TEMPORARY INSANITY.
Body Picked up by Anglers.
Some trouters, whilst fishing near Cochrane Pond yesterday, came upon the dead body of a man. On arriving in town they lodged information at the police court, and a posse of officers were Immediately dispatched to the spot. The body was found and brought to the morgue in the city this morning. The face was all but decomposed, and, it was considered, would not be recognized by any friends of the deceased. However, from information at the time of the disappearance of a man named John Churchill, some time since, the police officers felt sure he was the man. Two men who had known Churchill were called in and identified the body. Churchill, was a native of Portugal Cove, but went with wife and family to Random Sound, Trinity Bay, about ten years ago. He came here this spring, in the schooner “Sun Flower,” Captain Randall, for summer supplies. On the 3rd of the present month, he strayed from the schooner, and had not since been heard from. It was supposed that the man was suffering from temporary insanity at the time. He is fifty-four years old, and leaves a wife and family in Random.
