WILL SMOKE FISH IN TRINITY BAY
Mr. Wm. Flynn Erects Factory at Little Heart’s Ease
ST. JOHN’S – Mr. William Flynn of Heart’s Ease, Gooseberry Cove, T.B., has erected a small factory where he will put up smoked herring, turbot and salmon. Mr. Flynn is an enterprising man and is always on the qui vive to take up any project that modern requirements call for, and being a practical fishermen he knows how to handle the products that he proposes to exploit.
Heart’s Ease is a great centre for herring, and they are to be found there in abundance at certain seasons of the year, but as the people are dependent on the buyers of salt barrelled herring, and the price in recent years has declined, the industry is not followed up as it should be. The same applies to turbot. Trinity Bay deep water is the home of the turbot, but the fishery is not prosecuted to its full extent. What is needed is a factory at some central point in the south side of the bay where turbot could be smoked, and the fullest value got out of the industry. A smoked turbot has no equal as an edible fish. They command the highest price of any smoked fish and the market for them is unlimited in America and England. Mr. Flynn seems to be doing something that will give a start to this industry in Trinity Bay. The Trade Review expresses the hope that he will succeed. Any of our St. John’s grocery store proprietors, who are interested in the smoked fish business, and who would like to get a supply, would do well to correspond with Mr. Flynn.
