A Contingent of Newfoundlanders Train in Britain
Newly arrived Newfoundland troops watch a Sgt. Instructor explain the rudiments of gunnery; the Gunners are Stanley Williams, Woody Island; Max Martin, Hickman’s Hr.; Albert Piercey, New Perlican; Thomas McGrath, Torbay; Cyril Rideout, Moreton’s Hr.; Iliffe Wells, Campbellton.
Here an officer explains the working of a lorry engine to a class of M.T. drivers. Peter Edwards, Lawn; Gerald Fitzpatrick, St. John’s; William Mullrooney, Windsor; Wm. McNiven, St. John’s; Thomas Mercer, Corner Brook; Fred Young, Deer Lake; Wilson Price, Hillview.
Here they get some toughening exercises at what is called “Swinging the log” (L to R) S. Goodyear, of Trinity Bay; C.R. Dalton, of Trinity Bay; A. Hanes, of Bay of Islands; J. Duggan, of St. John’s; H. Freake, of Botwood; and J. Kilfor, of Marystown, get fighting fit.

Mr. K. F. Osmond, Secretary of the Newfoundland Fisheries Board is making satisfactory progress towards recovery after a surgical operation at the Grace Hospital. During his illness Miss Winifred Phillipps is acting secretary.
Miss Marion Avery of Hillview arrived in town the 15th, and is staying at the Brownsdale Hotel. She will be “At Home” to her friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Mrs. Graydon Westover (nee Armoral Pynn) and baby arrived by T.C.A. yesterday from Montreal and is staying with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.G. Pynn, 57 Golf Avenue.
