Visiting relatives and friends here recently were Captain and Mrs. Yetman Spaniard’s Bay. Constable Hugh Coady R.C.M.P. and Mrs. Coady and three children, St John’s. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Wallock and children Deborah and Barbara from Wisconsin, Mass., U.S.A. Mr. Harrison Greene, Everett, Mass., Mr. William Dodge US.A., Miss Anita Penney, Port Hope Simpson, Labrador, Mr. and Mrs. Jordon Stoyles, St. John’s, Mrs. Gerry Kielly and little girl Nora also of St. John’s, Barry and Chris Smith, Blaketown. Mr. and Mrs. John Churchill and son Grand Falls, Mr. and Mrs. David Stoyles, Gander. Mrs. Edmund Baker from Bishop’s Falls.
Celebrating birthdays are Mrs. Louise Avery her sixty ninth on July 25th. Mrs. Caleb Cooper her seventy eighth. Yveane Marsh her 10th. Mrs. Stan Wicks was 43 on July 19th. Mr. Jacob Smith and Miss Christine Peddle of Hodge’s Cove also celebrated birthdays.
Mrs. Bertha Loder and Mrs. M. Churchill have been patients in Walwyn Hospital. A speedy recovery is extended to them also to Mr. Archer Peddle who has been a patient there for some time.
Sheila Churchill who has been employed with Electric Reduction Company of Canada St. John’s has been transferred to Long Harbour with the same company. Sheila, was successful in passing her commercial course with honours at Clarenville Vocational Training. We congratulate her on her work.
Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Critch and family have returned to Toronto, after visiting relatives and friends in Hillview. They spent a few days with Mrs. Critch’s brother Mr. R. Stoyles at Glenwood.
A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Price at Walwyn Hospital.
Four horses were killed on the Trans Canada Highway near Hillview a few days ago, the driver of the car received slight injuries. The car was demolished.
Mr. and Mrs. Ross Stoyles have moved in to their new home. Ross is employed at Churchill Falls and is home for a few weeks.
Francis Stoyles Hillview and Ross Vivian, North West Brook spent some time at Roddickton, White Bay. They are both employed with the fire division.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Roy Stoyles a baby girl at Walwyn Hospital.
Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Francis Stoyles were Captain George King and Mrs. King from St. John N.B. Also visiting Mrs. Stoyles were, Mr. and Mrs. Weldon Stoyles of North Surrey, British Columbia.
Mr. and Mrs. William Porter, were also visitors here and Beverly Craw.
Brenda Holloway was three yrs old in July.
A stork shower was held at the home of Mrs. Mildred Vey on the 16th of July for Mrs. Chester Vey. A very enjoyable evening was spent many lovely gifts were received which was opened by Mrs. Andrew Rice and cards read by Mrs. Stuart Eddy.
Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Alfred John Vey and other friends and relatives were Mrs. Mac Newman from Germany. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Stoyles Gander and is here to attend the wedding of her daughter Carol Ann the wedding to take place in Grand Falls. She is accompanied by her daughter Lisa.
Little Lorraina Layden was two years old July 23rd. She is the foster child of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred J. Vey.
St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Sunnyside was the scene of a very pretty wedding on July 12th when Raymond Chesley Lambert son of Mr. and Mrs. Noah Lambert was united in marriage to Mary Ellen daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Hickey of Southern Harbour. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Morley Boutcher and the reception was held at the home of the groom. Relatives from Southport and Hillview were among the guests.
Friends in Hillview were sorry to hear of the sudden death on July 15th of Thomas Vokey of Weybridge, Random Island. Mr. Vokey died on his wav to Walwyn Hospital. He was laid to rest on July 18th from the U. Church Weybridge to the Anglican Cemetery. He was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion of the Clarenville Branch which comrades assembled in a body. Also members of the Loyal Orange Association. The funeral service was conducted by another first world war veteran, Mr. Silas Gardener of Clarenville. Deepest sympathy is extended to his widow and family.
Sandra Frost spent her holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Frost. She is a student nurse at the Grace Hospital.
News from Southport tells us that Henry Thomas Lambert and Moses Spurrell left on July 23rd by Clayton Frost’s taxi, for St. Joha’s where they will connect, with the S.S. Bonavista for Nain Labrador, where they are engaged in construction work.
Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Griffin from Vancouver are visiting Mrs. Griffins parents in Southport, Mr. and Mrs. Jabez Avery. Mr. Griffin is in the Armed Forces and will visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Griffin, Whitbourne. He is being transferred to Toronto.
Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Lambert are home from Toronto. They will visit Mrs. Lambert’s home in Wesleyville before returning to Toronto. His sister, Jean will accompany them back.
Mrs. Jessie Avery, Long Beach, who has been a patient at the General Hospital has returned home. Her husband Allen is a patient there. We wish them a speedy recovery.
Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Eldred Avery, Long Beach on the birth of twin girls, christened Maxine and Corraine.
Mr. and Mrs. William Way, Bonavista visited Mrs. Way’s brothers, Albert, Eliol, and Sam Drover also her sisters, Mrs. Gladys Peddle and Mrs. Maria Peddle all of Hodge’s Cove. All their friends were glad to have them visit. Her cousin, Mrs. Mary Baker, of St. John’s will accompany them home and spend some time there before returning to St. John’s. Mrs. Baker also visited relatives at Hillview, Adeyton and Deep Bight. Mr. Way is a veteran of World War one.
Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Spurrell, Hodge’s Cove are their son, Garfield and wife and five children from White Bay. Corporal Sandy and Mrs. Spurrell and son, Pictou, Nova Scotia, also their daughters and husbands, Mr. and Mrs. Timothy Picco, Portugal Cove and Mr. and Mrs. Doug Strong and one child from Clarenville, They are all here to attend the wedding of their youngest brother, Lloyd, who has been employed in an institute in Kingston but has been transferred to hospitals in St. John’s where he is presently employed.
Max Peddle is visiting his home in Hodge’s Cove. He is serving with the Canadian Guards at Pictou, N. S. He is the son of Mr. William J. Peddle.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Sullivan, Pouch Cove are visiting Mrs. Sullivan’s sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Spurrell. They will also attend the wedding of Lloyd Peddle.
Mr. William J. Peddle celebrated his birthday on July 29 and Alex Peddle on August 1st.
Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Eldred Butt, North West Brook were Mr. and Mrs. Warrick Butt and three children from Carbonear.
Mr. and Mrs. Eldred Butt visited Mrs. Butt’s mother and relatives at English Harbour, Trinity Bay.
Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Rogers Pool’s Island, Bonavista Bay spent a few days with Mrs. Roger’s parents at North West Brook.
Mrs. Vallance Butt visited her parents at Gambo.
A party was given Mr. Jacob Smith, Hodge’s Cove. on the occasion of his 64th. birthday. An enjoyable evening was spent by his friends. Mr. Smith’s son, Albert has returned on a visit from Toronto. He is accompanied by his girlfriend, Miss Philemena Helbriety of Toronto.
Mrs. Bert Pippett and two children visited her mother, Mrs. Violet Avery at Southport.
Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Peddle and family are visiting his mother, Mrs. Virtue Peddle, Hodge’s Cove.
Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Ben Smith and Mr. and Mrs. George Critch were Mr. and Mrs. Levi Smith and daughter, Judy from Corner ‘Brook. Also Levi’s mother, Mrs. Rose Smith from Labrador City. She is spending the summer at Deer Lake. This is the first time that Mrs. Ben Smith and Rose have seen each other for forty-four years and they were very close friends in their young days. It was a very glad reunion for both of them as they talked over many old memories. This is Judy’s first visit to Hillview and she enjoyed it very much. We would like for her to stay longer. They also visited friends at Sunnyside. The Smiths at Hillview plan to visit Corner Brook in the near future. Mrs. Rose Smith talked on the phone from Hillview to friends at Gooseberry Cove who were delighted to hear her voice. She is the widow of the late Isaac Smith formally of Gooseberry Cove.
A new teacher’s residence is now under construction.
Fishermen fishing out of Happy Adventure contacted your reporter and they are glad to report that fish struck in and they are all doing well, fishing from their long liners.

GOOSEBERRY COVE
The Ladies Council No. 34 of Gooseberry Cove spent a very enjoyable evening on Saturday July 27th when they were visited by the President of the Superior Lodge St. John’s. She was accompanied by three other members from St. John’s. Nineteen members attended the meeting. The sisters of the Ladies Council Gooseberry Cove were delighted to see Mrs. Hida Balsom of Clarenville and Mrs. Mary Smith of Come By Chance were able attend this meeting.
A lovely supper was prepared by the members of the Ladies Council in the S.U.F. Hall. After which they told jokes.
Raymond Langor of Gooseberry Cove is attending Summer Camp for Young Diabetics at Berry Heights which is opened from the to the 13th to the 23rd of August.
Miss Bernice Smith has returned home from St. John’s where she has been employed for a number of years. She will be leaving for Toronto in the near future.
Robert Davis and friend Fred Moores of Grand Falls visited Gooseberry Cove for a couple of days getting mussels to take home and bottle up. While here they were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Smith Sr.

A very pretty wedding was held at the United Church Caplin Cove when Sophie May daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Philip May Pools Cove Fortune Bay became the bride of Llovd Spurrell son of Mr. and Mrs. Hebert Spurrell Hodges Cove. The bride entered the Church on the arm of Mr. Nathaniel Whalen. She looked beautiful in a white satin gown with a lace train and a white headdress of nylon net. She carried a bouquet of red roses.
Mrs. Harold Whelan sister of the bride was Maid of Honor. Bridesmaids were Mrs. Elsie Strong and Mrs. Gertie Smith. Bill Spurrell was best man and Sandy Spurrell and Douglas Strong acted as ushers. Bonnie Smith was flower girl and Lester Spurrell ring bearer. The double ring ceremony was performed by Rev. E. Bailey. During the signing of the register a solo was sung by Miss Eleanor Baker “O perfect love”.
Organist was Mrs. Edgar Whalen. Following the Marriage Ceremony a reception was held at St. Mary’s Hall Hodges Cove where Rev. Bailey proposed the toast to the bride and groom.

Mr. Dick Welsh formerly of Bay de Verde now living in Everette Mass. accompanied Mr. Daniel Shaw on his visit to Gooseberry Cove where Mr. Welsh spent a couple days as guest of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Seward, it was Mr. Welsh’s first visit to Nfld in 40 years.

The Grade IX students were Joyce Spurrell, Daphne Seward, Joan Seward, Veronica FitzGerald, Vera Seward, Chris Smith and Junior Seward. Also congratulations to their teacher Mr. John Chaytor (Manuels) for such good results. 16 wrote 9 and 10 exams and 11 were successful.

Mrs. Lillian Langor is at present in St. John’s where she is receiving medical treatment.

Alex Benson of Little Hearts Ease now at Toronto was a patient at the Workman’s Compensation Hospital at Toronto for a month where he was receiving treatment for a slip Disc which has kept him from work for past ten months. His parents and friends are happy to know he is back to work again.

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Baker of Hodges Cove are leaving to spend a while visiting their son Hayward at Halifax.
Miss Norma Andrews of St. John’s is spending a weeks holidays with friends at Little Hearts Ease. Miss Andrews was primary teacher in the United Church school here two years ago and this year will take up duties on teaching staff at Come-By-Chance.
Mr. and Mrs. Bert Templeman of St. John’s spent the weekend with friends at Little Hearts Ease. Mr. Templeman served this pastoral charge as United Church minister and as since taken up duties with the Churchill Falls Manpower St. John’s.
Mr. and Mrs. George Pitcher, and son Wayne of Grand Bank, spent two days visiting Mr. and Mrs. Eli Martin.
The people of this pastoral charge are very happy to welcome back Mr. Parsons their United Church Minister. Mr. Parsons has been on the mainland for the summer months attending University he spent a weeks vacation with his parents before returning to the charge. Mr. Parsons served this pastoral charge for the past year and will take up duties for another year.

A party was held for Mr. and Mrs. Eric Martin at Mrs. Walter Staceys. Sixty-five attended the party. They received [many] nice gifts. The party was taped to take back to Toronto for some friends. Out of town guests were Mr. and Mrs. Sam Martin, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Martin, Mr. and Mrs. Philip Marsh all from Clarenville. A very enjoyable evening was spent. Mr. and Mrs. Martin have left for Toronto where Mr. Martin is employed.
Mr. and Mrs. Allan Whalen arrived home after spending the 3 summer months with their three daughters at Old Perlican.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Williams and their daughter Kimberley are motor back to Labrador City to spend a months holidays with their parents Mr. and Mrs. Albert Drodge of Little Heart’s Ease, and Mr. and Mrs. Williams of Bunyans Cove. They will then motor back to Labrador City where Mr. Williams is employed.

Mr. and Mrs. Nehemiah Stringer motored to Gander Airport last Sunday to meet Mrs. Stringer’s brother and family Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Rideout and two sons David and Jim after spending some time with Mrs. Stringer they motored to Long Pond. They arrived from Scotland to attend the wedding of their daughter Ann, who will be married at Long Pond Manuels on August 17th,

Audrey Martin of St. John’s is presently spending her vacation with her girlfriend Miss Gloria Stringer.

Minnie Smith spent some time recently visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smith. Minnie, was engaged recently to Otto Pitcher of Weybridge he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Pitcher. They have since returned to Toronto where they are both employed.
There passed away at Long Beach after a short illness Mr. John Robert Avery in his 96 yrs. To the bereaved family we extend deepest sympathy.

Fish is reported to be very scarce in the Little Hearts Ease area. Men are taking in their cod traps for this season. Some are left to seek employment at Churchill Falls and some more are employed on the road work and elsewhere.
A very pretty wedding was held at St. Thomas Church, St. John’s on July 26 of William Baker son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Baker of Hodges Cove to Janette Bussey daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Bussey of St. John’s. Attending the wedding from Hodges Cove were Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Baker Mr. and Mrs. Eleayer Baker, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Baker, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Vey of Long Beach, they have left for a honeymoon on the mainland of Canada.

Mr. Eli Loder who was visiting relatives here returned on August 15th to board the Ambrose Shea where he is employed.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hillier spent their holidays at their former home Terra Nova. The Hilliers, took up residence here a year ago and is working with Newfound land and Labrador Commission.
Ross Stoyles has returned to Churchill Falls after spending his holidays home. He has been employed there for the past 2 years.
The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Critch was christened in the All Saints Anglican Church North West Brook on July 21st and given the name Barry. Godparents were his father Ben Critch, Gordon Butt and Mrs. Yvonne Butt.
We offer our congratulations to the successful students on passing their public examinations and best wishes and better luck next year to ‘those who failed.

Mr. and Mrs. Don Dawe who spent six weeks visiting Mrs. Dawe’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Spurrell Butter Cove has returned to Toronto. Their son also visited with them.
Mrs. Claude Adey, Adeyton celebrated her birthday on August 18.
Mr. Fred Parsons Hillview celebrated his on August 25th. Ben Critch on August 6th. Lucy Critch on August 23. She was five years and her sister Wanda will be 3 on August 13. They are the children of Ben Critch of Hillview.
Mr. and Mrs. David Spurrell, Butter Cove who will celebrate their forty-second wedding anniversary on September 16. They, were married in St. Alban’s Anglican Church by Rev. R. S. Sheppard.
Among other visitors Mrs. Harold Young visited here on Saturday Aug. 17. She is from Deer Lake and was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Smith.
During the thunder and lightening storm very little damage is reported here. But reports from Long Beach tells us that while Mrs. Thomas Avery was speaking on the phone, a flash of lightening burst through the window tearing off the wires and damaged the phone so much that a new one had to be installed. Her little one and half year old child was struck by the lightening and fell on the floor. Mrs. Avery was very frightened but managed to take him up and they both left the house. Her husband had left the home a short while before it happened. The ‘Averys are very thankful that nothing worse had happened, which could have caused a tragedy. Mr. Avery celebrated his birthday on August 26th.
Mrs. Gertie Jacobs, of Little Heart’s Ease had her sister visit her from Mass. Mrs. Jacobs is at present in St. John’s.
Mr. and Mrs. Elis Avery from Corner Brook visited his three uncles Edwin, Alfred and William Avery at Long Beach.
Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Boone of St. John’s visited relatives at Long Beach.
Luke Pitcher from Toronto visited his wife’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Avery, Long Beach. He also visited other relatives and friends in Random and at Clarenville and Random Island. He spent some time with his brothers in St. John’s before returning to Toronto.
Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Vey and family spent their holidays with Mr. Vey’s parents Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Vey, Long Beach. They are also from Toronto. They also visited other relatives and friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Elias Avery from Corner Brook spent some time visiting Mr. Avery’s three brothers in Long Beach.
The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. William Smith of Hatchet Cove, was christened in the United Church Hodge’s Cove on August 18th and was given the name of Neville Shawn.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Baker of Hodge’s cove left for Halifax where they will visit their son Hayward.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Churchill Windsor visited friends in Hillview.

The new church building fund that was started here in Hillview in the early spring is very satisfactory. Each family contributes every month and donations received from outsiders have been gratefully acknowledged.
Mr. John Avery Sr. of Deep Bight celebrated his 86th birthday on August 18th.

Two year old David Isaacs of Burin has to enter the Janeway Hospital for surgery. His mother was the former Susan Benson of Little Heart’s Ease.
Mrs. William Smith, North West Brook is a patient in the Orthopedic Hospital, St. John’s and Mrs. Francis Norris also of North West Brook -is a patient in the General Hospital. A speedy recovery is extended to both ladies.
Fred Spurrell, Toronto, formerly of Butter Cove was 26 years old on August 24th.
A very pretty wedding took place in St. Nicholas’ Anglican Church Champneys East at three o’clock on Saturday August tenth. When Lillian daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Walters was united in holy wedlock to Ronald, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Spurrell of Butter Cove. The bride looked beautiful dressed in a white floor length gown with shoulder length veil and carrying a bouquet of red and white carnations as she entered the church leaning on the arm of her uncle Harry Walters, who gave her in marriage. Maid of honour was Myra Deroisera sister of the bride from Toronto who wore pale yellow. The bridesmaids were Vera Dawe the groom’s sister also from Toronto and Mildred Walters, sister-in-law of the bride from Labrador City. Both wore mint green and carried bouquets of green and yellow. chrysanthemums. While Mark Walter twin brother of the bride from Labrador City supported the groom. Also supporting the groom were his brother Harrison and Roger Deroisere. Organist was Ruby Warren the brides sister who was dressed in yellow.
The double ring ceremony was performed by Rev. Greening. Following the ceremony the bridal party motored to Clarenville where a reception was held at Holiday Inn for over one hundred guests. Toast to the bride was proposed by Eldred Warren, brother-in-law of the bride and was responded to by the groom. At the end of the reception Mark Walters and Alex Spurrell both spoke which everyone enjoyed very much. Following the reception a dance and refreshments was held in the banquet room where every one enjoyed themselves.
The music was provided by the Silver Stars Orchestra from Port Blandford. There were also guests from Corner Brook attended.
Many beautiful and costly gifts were received besides a large sum of money in cash.
The dance went on till the early hours of morning. The brides mother was dressed in beige and the grooms mother wore a two piece suit of light blue both wore corsages to match.
The happy couple have left for Toronto where Ronald is employed as machine operator and Lillian is bank teller.
The brides little niece from Heart’s Delight was the lucky one to catch the bouquet as the bride threw it over her shoulder.
The correspondent joins with others in wishing them many yrs. of wedded happiness.
