Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Stoyles recently were Mr. and Mrs. Claude Vokey and family, Mr. and Mrs. James Harding and family, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Stoyles and family and Mr. David Walters all of St. John’s visiting Mr. and Mrs. Max Stoyles were Mr. and Mrs. Elliot Churchill and son St. John’s. Also visiting Mr. and Mrs. Max Stoyles was her cousin the former Phyllis Snow. Other visitors for the long weekend were Mr. and Mrs. Pleamon Avery, Catalina, Mr. and Mrs. G. Stuckless and family, Bishop’s Falls. Mr. and Mrs. William Baker, St. John’s, Mr. Eli Loder and son Gary Dunville, Placentia Bay Mr. and Mrs. James Smith Eastport, B.B., Mr. and Mrs. David Stoyles and son Andy, Gander. They were accompanied by Andy’s friend Roy Pike. Ray Forward and family St. John’s, Linda Loder, Come-By-Chance.
Mrs. Leah Stanford has returned home from St. John’s where she was a patient in the hospital there for some time. Mrs. Nellie Smith, Queen’s Cove has also re turned home from the Grace hospital, but she has to report back in a few weeks time.
Miss Marion Avery, Hillview is still a patient in the Orthopaedic Hospital where she has been receiving special treatment for over two months.
George Smith came home May 21st after undergoing surgery in the General Hospital on March 22.
Mrs. Juanita Smith, Gooseberry Cove is also home from the Grace Hospital after undergoing surgery. A speedy recovery is extended to all of them.
Rosella Price visited St. John’s for treatment. She was accompanied by her mother, Mrs. Moses Price.
Mr. and Mrs. Eric Loder, Hillview attended the wedding of Mrs. Loder’s brother in Parker’s Cove on Saturday May 25th.
Mrs. Violet Stoyles visited her son Newman Cooper at Milton.
A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Stoyles at Walwyn Hospital on May 16th.
Celebrating birthdays are Mrs. May Loder, May 18th, Mrs. Moses Price May 17, Mr. Wilfred Locke May 14th, Mrs. Nora Marsh, Dennis Marsh, Hillview, Paul Smith, Paul and Dawn Strickland, Mrs. Priscilla Loder, Lori Loder and Cindy Loder. Mrs. Thomas Seward, Gooseberry Cove and Mr. and Mrs. David Benson, of Little Heart’s Ease are also celebrating birthdays.
The angel of death visited Deep Bight on May 13th claiming for its own the soul of Roy Green, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Green, aged fifteen years. Although he had not been in perfect health all through his young life death came sudden and unexpected. He leaves to mourn besides his parents, one sister Hazel. Grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Newman Green, and Mr. and Mrs. John Avery Jr., all of Deep Bight. He was laid to rest on May 15. The Sunday School children paraded to the funeral which was conducted by the minister, Mr. Harleigh Paddle.
Passed away at the General hospital on May 12th William Gregory of Queen’s Cove age 72. He leaves to mourn besides his wife Priscilla, three sons and one daughter. Five brothers and two sisters. He was laid to rest on May 14th in the United Church Cemetery, Queen’s Cove.
The Salvation Army at Little Heart’s Ease held their annual Mother’s Day service on Mother’s Day May 12. A programme was put off by the children under the leadership of Brigadier and Mrs. Russell. Also the day school teachers. During the service the mothers were presented with pink carnations by their children while white carnations were placed on the Bible on the altar in memory of the mothers who had passed away. The programme was very beautiful and largely attended.
A house to house collection was taken up in Hillview for the Canadian Cancer Society. The collectors were Mrs. William H. Stoy les, Mrs. Eleazer Howse, Mrs. Roy Critch and Mrs. Luke Critch. The amount collected was $39.75 The collectors wish to thank the people of Hillview who contributed to such a worthy cause.
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Dean, of Southport attended the reunion at Grand Falls of the One hundred and sixty sixth Royal Artillary, while there they met many of their old friends and they enjoyed themselves tremendously. Mrs. Dean also received a phone call that her daughter Mrs. Jessie Spurrell had given birth to a baby boy at the Grace Hospital.
Visiting Mrs. Maggie Marsh recently were Mrs. Pheobe Budgell and her sister Mrs. Evelyn Budgell of Bishops Falls.
Happy birthday to Roy Howse who celebrated his birthday recently. We wish you many more Roy.
Passed away at Hodge’s Cove on May 23rd Mrs. Eliol Drover, age 53 years leaving to mourn besides her husband thirteen children, six sons and seven daughters. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Llewellyn Barfitt of Clarenville; 3 brothers and 3 sisters. She was laid to rest in the Anglican Cemetery at Hodge’s Cove. Burial service was conducted by Reverend Morley Boutcher. Sincere sympathy is extended to the bereaved family and relatives.
Your reporter visited North Harbour this week and the people there say that this year is the worst lobster season that they have seen for a long time but the cod fishery is fair.
The ladies of the Great Heart’s Ease would wish to have printed in the Clarenville Packet that the friend in Hillview who donated the crocheted cloth to them for their social on Easter Monday was Mrs. Ben Smith and the proceeds collected went to their church in Gooseberry Cove in memory of Mr. Smith’s parents, Joseph and Martha Smith of Gooseberry Cove. The ladies have requested this to appear in the next issue of the Packet.
Mr. Robert Peddle, Hodge’s Cove has been accepted for the Church Army in Toronto. His studies will begin in September.
Terry Spurrell of Butter Cove has left for Toronto where he has found employment. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Spurrell. His brother Kevin is also living in Toronto.
Mrs. Juanita Smith returned home May 19th from the Grace Hospital where she underwent surgery on May 10th.
Breada Seward one year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Seward has returned to the Janeway Hospital for further treatment.
Mrs. Annie Benson of Little Hearts Ease is waiting for a bed in the General Hospital.
A son born to Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Spurrell of Southport at the Grace Hospital on May 18th, a brother for David.
Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Welsh and children of Sunnyside visited Mrs. Welsh’s mother, Mrs. Delia Smith Gooseberry Cove.
Mr. and Mrs. Seymour Brown and family from Fortune visited Mrs. Brown’s mother Mrs. Dinah Coozze.

A going away party was held in the United Church School at Little Hearts Ease, June 4th, for Mr. Parsons, Minister of the Little Hearts Ease Pastoral Charge, a collection of $41.00 was made and presented to him, he was very surprised and made a short speech and thanked the people for their kindness. Lunch was served by the Ladies and a very enjoyable evening was spent by all who attended, from the money he received he is getting a Bible version of the encyclopedia in remembrance of the people of Little Hearts Ease, he left here Wednesday for a short visit to his home before going to Pine Hill University for six weeks, he is hoping to return to this charge for the third Sunday in August. We wish him every success.
Birthday Greetings are extended to Mr. Maxwell Avery, who celebrated his birthday June 17th.
Visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Avery on Sunday June 2nd were Mr. Avery’s brother Mr. Elias Avery, his wife and two sons Ewart and John from Hickmans Harbour.
Birthday greetings are extended to Marilyn Ann Lambert who celebrated her 12th birthday June 12.
Congratulations and best wishes are extended to Mr. and Mrs. George Stringer who celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary June 2.
Birthday greetings are extended to Mr. Chester Avery who celebrated his birthday June 27th. Chester is employed by Household Movers, Happy Valley, Labrador.
A baby shower was held recently at the home of Mrs. Albert Stacey for Mrs. William Jacobs, about 25 ladies attended as the gifts were opened the cards were read by Mrs. Mary Spurrell. Guess parcels were won by Mrs. Bram Drodge. Games were played and lunch was served and the evening was enjoyed by all who attended.

Quite a few ladies attended and many gifts were presented to the two ladies in whose honor the occasion was held. As the gifts were opened the cards for Mrs. Eli Stringer were read by Mrs. Leonard Stringer and the cards for Mrs. Samuel Soper were read by Mrs. Roy Drodge. Guess parcels were won by Mrs. George Stringer, Mrs. Wm. George Stringer, Mrs. Roy Drodge, Mrs. Bram Drodge and Mrs. Max Marsh. A surprise gift was won by Mrs. William Stringer. Games were played and lunch was served. A very enjoyable evening was spent by all who attended.
Get well wishes are extended to Mr. Max Avery who entered the hospital June 11th to have his tonsils removed. We wish him a speedy recovery.
Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Rodique and son Paul left Clarenville Friday June 14th for California to visit Mr. Rodique’s family. His father is in hospital, seriously ill.
Mr. and Mrs. Francis Stoyles celebrated their twenty sixth wedding anniversary on June 4th. Also Mr. and Mrs. Ross Stoyles on their second wedding anniversary the same day. Ross is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Stoyles.
Miss Marion Avery has returned home after spending some time receiving treatment in the Orthopedic hospital, St. John’s. She is gradually improving. Mrs. Frances Stoyles celebrated her birthday on June 7th. We wish her many more.
James Smith will celebrate his 28th birthday on June 29. He was born on St. Peter and St. Paul’s day 1940, the day that General Balboa was killed in a mysterious plan crash. The same day Bishop O’Neill of Harbour Grace was made Bishop. Jim has been teaching at Eastport for the past five years. Christine Spurrell, Dennise Spurrell and Joyce Spurrell will celebrate their birthdays in June. Christine the seventeenth; Dennise the twenty-second; and Joyce on June 14th. Also Hilda Spurrell of Butter Cove will celebrate her 21 birthday on June 6. Hilda is employed in Toronto and was home for her holidays. She has since returned to Toronto to resume work.
Eric Marsh, Hillview was five years old on June 15. His sister Violet will be three on June 26. Mrs. Francis Norris, North West Brook celebrated her 60 birthday on June 19th.
Vicky and Doris Norris are visiting their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Francis Norris North West Brook.
Vickey is working with the Department of education trade school, St. John’s. While Doris is employed in the Grace Hospital, St. John’s. Mr. and Mrs. William Smith, North West Brook celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary on June 3. Many more happy anniversaries are wished to them, by their many friends.
Mrs. William Smith, North West Brook and her son Jacob attended the funeral of her uncle Josiah Baker of St. John’s. Mr. Baker’s sister and her husband from Grand Falls also attended the funeral.
A very pretty wedding took place in the United Church Hillview on June 1st when Hazel Green onlv daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Green of Deep Bight became the bride of David Lloyd son of the late David and Annie Stoyles of Hillview. Given in marriage by her father the bride looked lovely dressed in white. The bride’s maid was Patsey Feltham of Clarenville and Melvina Critch of Hillview acted as maid of honor. Bridesboy was Clarence Avery, uncle of the bride while Stuart Eddy of Hillview was best man. A reception was held at the home of the bride. The couple received many useful and costly gifts. They plan to live in St. John’s where the groom is employed with I.A.C.
The ceremony was performed by Mr. Paddle.
The marriage took place in Craighton recently of Dorman Price of Hillview and Patricia Pretz of Craighton. Following the ceremony a reception was held in Cabrini Hall, Craighton, where a large congregation attended. Best wishes go to both married couples from the correspondent at Hillview. Dorman is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Moses Price.
Mrs. Jessie Spurrell, Windsor is feeling much better after being ill for a long time. She was the former Jessie Price of Hillview.
Mr. William Parsons, St. John’s visited his brother Mr. Fred Parsons.
Mr. and Mrs. Terry Froude of Windsor visited Mrs. Froude’s parents.
Mrs. Elijah Price Bishop’s Falls is visiting relatives in Hillview.
Mr. Noah Rendell is also visiting friends he is also from Bishop’s Falls. Miss Millicent Reid, Jamestown, is a visitor here. She is employed in Walwyn Hospital.
Clara Parsons will be fourteen years old June 15th.
A baby boy was born at the Grace Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Pen Smith Jr., Gooseberry Cove. Mrs. Juanita Smith, Gooseberry Cove who spent some time in the Grace Hospital is home and feeling better. Her mother Mrs. Alex Spurrell, Sunnyside is staying with her, while she is convalesing.
Mr. Ernest Spurrell spent a week in the Walwyn hospital. He is from Butler Cove.
Willis and Edgar John Smith of Gooseberry Cove who has been fishing out of Happy Adventure Bonavista Bay from their new long liner “Freddie Marlene” reports that the fishing season is very unsatisfactory owing to the cold weather which causes the water to be cold. There are also men fishing there from Southport in their long liners reports the same, that fish is very scarce. We quote one mane as saying “After going to such extreme expence and hard work we have our gill nets tore up and see very little for our work is very discouraging.” Some of them go as far as Cape Bonavista but still no fish one long liner from Southport has left to go further north to try their luck. We wish them better luck as the summer advances. Reports from Butler Cove say that the fishermen did fairly well on Saturday June 8 and there has also been a better sign of salmon.
Congratulations to George Smith Sunnyside who was fifteen years old on June 4th.
Mr. and Mrs. Ben Smith, Hillview motored to Gander on Thursday June 6 to visit their daughter Velma who was injured in a car accident on May 31. They were accompanied on the trip by their son George.
Mr. Joseph E. Smith, Gooseberry Cove is rapidly improving after spending some time in the General hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Daring spent a few days with Mr. and Mrs. Eldred Butt.
Miss Glenys Stoyles dropped in to see Mr. and Mrs. Alfred John Vey on her way to Goobies.
Velma Smith of Hillview and her friend David Brown of Gander miraculously escaped serious injuries on May 31 when they were involved in a head on collision while driving along a street in Gander. A speeding car crossed the street causing a head on collision. They were taken to the Paton Memorial Hospital. The driver of the other car is still in hospital but David and Velma were released. David received injuries to his leg. Velma suffered facial injuries and bruises. David is mechanic at Hickman’s Garage Gander, Velma is employed at the laboratory at the Gander Hospital it will be some time before they can resume work again. Both cars are demolished.
A correction to be made, the young man who went to work in Toronto from Butler Cove was Hughie Spurrell not Terry.
