X-976, Elias Avery came up from Long Beach, Trinity, and joined the Navy in 1914. Overseas he served on several warships on patrol as seaman was a. crew member of a patrol ship that sunk : the U-boat responsible for the sinking of the unarmed liner “Lusitania”, May 7, 1915. “In connection with this,” he said, “when the U-boat captain was rescued and boarded the patrol ship, he was struck in the face by an irate bluejacket who had a brother lost on the Lusitania. The seaman was severely reprimanded for his spate of temper and sent ashore for six months.” Elias was demobbed in 1919. He has a son serving in Korea.
