DROVER, Cyril Frederick – In Loving Memory of Fred Drover. Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Friend. 1945 – 2025.  It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Fred Drover, who left this world peacefully at the age of 80.  A man of quiet strength, deep roots, and quick wit, Fred was the kind of person who never let anyone leave his home empty-handed. Whether it was a bundle of vegetables from his garden, an outrageous amount of bottled moose or the gift of an hour-long conversation when picking up your mail, Fred always made sure those around him were taken care of—often before they even realized they needed something.  Born in Hodge’s Cove, Fred built a life centred around family, hard work, and good music—  country music, to be exact. His love for classic country was well-known and passionately defended, and his extensive collection will live on with his children and grandchildren, who will carry on the soundtrack of his life with pride.  He was a devoted husband to Minnie Drover, a proud father to Juanita and her husband Jeff Smith, and to Blair and his wife Stefanie Drover, and a deeply loved grandfather of Kandice and Rebecca. He took immense joy in the simple things: working in the garden, moose hunting, shopping in bulk to feed the community of Hodge’s Cove, and spending time surrounded by the people he loved—whether through long conversations or memorable storytelling.  He will be remembered in every country song that plays on a quiet afternoon, in every sunny summer day’s BBQ, and in every garden that grows just a little too much food. He leaves behind a family who adored him, friends who respected him, and a legacy of generosity, humour, and unconditional love.  A funeral service was held on October 24th, 2025, at 3:00 pm from St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Hodge’s Cove, where stories, music, and laughter will be shared in his honour. Instead of flowers, donations made to the family will be gratefully forwarded to the Southwest Arm Volunteer Fire Department. (Reprinted from Vardy’s Funeral Home)

Marie Ontario on February 2nd. He will be missed dearly by his loving wife and best friend of 51 years, Yvonne. He was the eldest son of the late Calvert and Lucy Meadus. Brother to Lindo Meadus (Kim) who was a kindred spirit and more often than not, knew what Wilf was thinking even before he did. He was a loving father to sons Bradley and Andrew who worked with him daily and were proud to have followed in the footsteps of an extraordinary, hardworking man. Father to daughter Karen Lefave (Greg) who he loved dearly and always reminded her how much she was loved and how proud he was of her. His generosity to both friends and strangers knew no bounds and he never needed nor wanted recognition for helping others. His passion was his boat, The Dominion Sea, and fishing. There was nothing more fulfilling to Wilf than a hard day’s work and often said “if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.” Special thanks to 3B staff at Sault Area Hospital including Andrew, Deanna, Marina, Colleen, Sarah, Erica, Dr. White, Dr Dawson, Dr. Booth, Dr Tozer, and Dr. Apostle. PEACH, David Avery – If laughter truly is the best medicine, then David Peach was the town’s most trusted pharmacist. Born and raised in Port Morien, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and spent his family life in Caplin Cove, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador after meeting Donna, the girl of his dreams, while working at Woolworths on Water Street in St. John’s. David lived a life rich in music, Tom foolery, and love—especially for his grandkids (Aaron (Morgan), Logan (Leah), Kaylee, Sydney and Hyllary), who were his pride and joy. A gifted guitarist and soulful singer, David could turn any kitchen party into a concert hall. Whether strumming alongside his good buddy Bill or serenading a room full of friends, he had a knack for making people smile—and just as often, making them laugh until they cried. His pranks were legendary, his timing impeccable, and his heart as big as Trinity Bay. David didn’t just entertain—he connected. He had a way of making everyone feel like they belonged, whether through a song, a story, or a well-placed joke. His joy was contagious, his spirit unforgettable. Well known in the area as the proprietor of DJs Variety for many many years and finishing his career at Clarenville Ford. He loved his Ford family and going to work there every single day. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, love, and music. And while the stage may be quiet now, the echoes of his voice and the warmth of his presence will play on in the hearts of all who knew him. Predeceased by his parents, Robert and Una Peach and wife’s parents, Ab and Kathleen Whalen. Celebrating his life are his family Donna, Jason, Stephanie, Jill, Vic and their children mentioned above. His siblings Ron (Liz), Glen (Margret) and Wendy (Bill) His extended family Audrey and Alf, Harry and Liz and their families. And who could forget his very best buddy Bill Russell. A very special thanks to the Doctors, Nurses and Staff at Doctor G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital in Clarenville. Your care and treatment was second to none. A very special thanks to Dr. Whalen and Dr. Stockwell. Cremation will take place and celebration of life to be held at a later date. P.S. Dad. You did it. You passed first try with flying colours. Just remember that a popsicle can fix anything and that duct tape just means your doing it half arsed.

PEDDLE, Reginald – Mr. Reginald Peddle of Bay Roberts, passed peacefully away at Chancellor Park, St. John’s on Monday, September 22, 2025. Mr. Peddle was 74 years old. Leaving to mourn his loving family:
Wife of 50 years: Linda
Children: Heather (Denise), Travis (Leif) & Matthew (Sarah)
Grandchildren: Kate & James
Brothers: Russ (Velma) & Colin
Aunt: Ruby Drover
Uncle: Jim Peddle
Sisters-in-law: Lois (Graham Coombs), Debbie (Greg O’Brien) & Debbie Peddle

He also leaves to mourn many nieces, nephews cousins and friends who were as close as family

Pre deceased by:
Parents: Josiah & Melvina Peddle
Siblings: Selena (Alec), Daphne (Eric), Vic & Melvin (Debbie)
Parents-in-law: Jessie and Lloyd Mercer

Reg enjoyed having his family and friends around him. He was always up for good music, a laugh, and an adventure. He loved spending time at his cabin in Indian Bay and going trouting. Now, the stories of those trout or his hunting adventures may need to be fact-checked! He has been known to exaggerate at times! You could easily find him strumming the guitar or tapping on the drums whenever there was an opportunity and someone to join him. But it was his time with his grandchildren that brought him the most joy—taking them into the garden, Swiss Chalet or doing whatever they wanted. The word “no” rarely existed for the grandchildren. Over the years, Reg’s work took him from his home town of Hodges Cove to many places all over Canada. He earned a wonderful reputation in the ironworker community and was well respected by his fellow iron workers. Reg holds the unique distinction of having worked on all three Olympic sites built in Canada. His children were all born while he and Linda lived in his hometown of Hodges Cove, the place that they met. They moved to Country Road in the late 80’s where he and Linda quickly built a community of friends that continued to grow. Reg was often said to have had nine lives, and maybe that was supported by his love for his cat Becker. They would watch hockey together and share chips—Becker always got his share. His kindness, quick wit, and sense of humor will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him. God grant that I may live to fish, until my dying day. And when it come to my last cast, I then most humbly pray, when in the Lord’s safe landing net, I’m peacefully asleep. That in his mercy I be judged, as big enough to keep. The family will be receiving relatives and friends at Slade’s Funeral Home, L.T. Stick Drive, Bay Roberts on Wednesday: 2-5 P.M. & 7-9 P.M. and Thursday: 10:30 A.M.-12 Noon, 2-5 P.M. & 7-9 P.M. In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, donations can be made to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation https://cancercarefoundation.ca    The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, September 26, 2025 at 2 P.M. from St. Mark’s Anglican Church & Cemetery, Shearstown. Condolences may be written to the family at: sladesfuneralhome.ca , on the Tribute Wall section of the obituary. For further information please call Slade’s Funeral Home, Bay Roberts at 709-786-2323.  Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Slade’s Funeral Home, serving Carbonear, Upper Island Cove, Bay Roberts, Spaniard’s Bay and surrounding areas.

SMITH, Ken – From as far back as we can remember Dad used to say “If I had known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself”. He lived with a devil may care attitude and against all the odds he passed away just one week shy of his 80th birthday. Dad was born in Hodge’s Cove, Newfoundland on November 26th 1945. He was smart as a whip but he didn’t care much for his high school courses. As the story goes, he failed his grade 12 math class and his mother told him to go back to school or go out and find a job. He met with a recruiter for the Canadian Armed Forces that same day and came home and told his mother he was headed to Saint-Jean, Quebec for basic training. I don’t think that was what Patience had in mind but the plan was set, and he was taking his first steps toward becoming a Military Police Officer. He met our mother, Pat Kelly In Val-d’Or, Quebec. His idea of a romantic proposal was letting her know that he was being posted to Germany and that he had no intention of leaving without her. Somehow, she fell for that, and an 18-year old Pat and a 21-year old Ken were off to Europe. They traveled the world together, made 9 military moves, and had 3 children during their almost 35 year marriage. In 2001 they separated, but it’s no secret that Pat was the love of his life; he never did get over her.Dad was well respected at work. He was a straight shooter and he wasn’t afraid to stand up for what he thought was right. He had no patience for politics. We have it on good authority that his direct approach got him into trouble from time to time. Even still, that boy from Hodge’s Cove who never graduated from high school, rose through the ranks to become a Master Warrant Officer. He spent most of his career as a Military Police with a final stint at External Affairs in Ottawa. He was proud of his 32 years of service and grateful for the wonderful friends he made along the way.Dad was a character of the game. He drank like a fish and smoked like a chimney. He could play musical instruments by ear, he could juggle, he could catch, clean, batter and fry a hundred smelts in one night. He was well known for his wedding speeches which were always hilarious and sometimes more like roasts than toasts. He could cook an amazing prime rib dinner, BBQ up a mean plate of chicken and ribs, and make a delicious traditional boiled dinner with salt beef in the pressure cooker. Dad was an avid sports enthusiast and fan. In his younger years he fished, golfed, bowled, curled, hunted and played hockey and baseball. In his later years televised sports and their commentators were his constant companions. He measured time in Super Bowls, as in “how many Super Bowls do you think I have left?” He kept our beloved epileptic dog Buddy alive for an unlikely 17 years on bologna, barbiturates, a constant dose of antibiotics and belly rubs. Our dad was a real one. The world was a more colourful place for having him in it. We’d like to think that he’s golfing with his brother Stan, having a cuppa with his sister Doris and that when he settles in at night to watch Sportsnet, Buddy is cuddled into the crook of his knees. Ken Smith passed away on November 20th, 2025 at home in Fergus, Ontario. We would have hoped for more Super Bowls. He was predeceased by his parents Patience and Ralph Smith, his brother Stanley Smith and his Sister Doris Vey. He will be lovingly remembered by his three children Ryan Smith (Alisa Murphy-Smith), Kelly Smith (Derek Smith), Tracy McKay (Jeff McKay), their mother Pat Kelly, his 6 grandchildren Kaili, Liam, Claire, Sophia, Beckett and Felix, his sisters Clarice Spurrell and Marion Spurrell, and his many nieces and nephews. Plans for a Celebration of Life will be forthcoming in the New Year. (Reprinted from Graham A. Giddy Funeral Home website)
