Hodge’s Cove Notes
On Thursday, Nov. 11th, a concert was held in the C.E.W.A. hall, under the direction of the teacher Sam C. Drover, with Mr. Harvey Peddle chairman. A large number of visitors came from the nearby settlements and they all enjoyed a good time. The teacher and his troupe are to be congratulated on their splendid success.
After the concert a tea was served and a dance was kept up until the early hours of the morning.
Rev. Dickenson arrived home on Saturday from St. John’s, accompanied by the Rev. J.A. Meaden. Mr. Meaden preached a very interesting sermon at St. Mary’s church on Sunday morning and in the afternoon he left by the mission boat Penafore for Gooseberry Cove, where a sermon was to be held at St. Alban’s Church.
Mr. Templeman, district supervisor, was at Hodge’s Cove last week inspecting the school. We understand that Mr. Davis has the largest number of pupils ever recorded there; at present there are sixty attending with others to attend.
Mrs. R.J. Peddle, who for the past two weeks was spending a holiday with her son, at St. John’s, returned home today.
The schooner Exotic, Captain Wm. Small, arrived from St. John’s last week with a cargo of freight.
The following teachers were visitors to Hodge’s Cove during the week.
Miss Lucy Costello of Gooseberry Cove, Miss Emmie Benson of Hillview, Miss Susie Vey of Long Beach, Messrs. Hanlon of Gooseberry Cove and S. Dodge and L. Ivany from St. Jones Without.
Obituary
We regret to announce the death of Josiah Higgins who passed away at his home last week. Mr. Higgins was confined to his bed for some twenty years, but he bore his illness with patience and was never heard to complain or murmur. His body was laid to rest in the C. of E. cemetery. – The layman conducted the funeral services.
