A 6-5 victory over Bloomfield on Thursday, March 28 got Hodges Cove back into the running in the Trinity Bay Hockey League Semi-finals.
The game played at the Clarenville Arena before 1169 fans saw the winners jump off to a 2-0 first period and a 5-2 lead going into the final twenty minutes of action.
Joe Stringer was the big gun for Hodges Cove scoring two of the goals with singles coming from Bram Jacobs, Bill Russell, Levi Churchill and Vic Trowbridge.
Don Lane had a pair of goals for Bloomfield with Clay Phillips, Horace Noftall and Clarence Russell adding singles.
Referee Eric Hunt handed out three minor penalties in the game two of them against the winners.
Bloomfield still leads the best of five series at 2-1.

April 26, 1968
We were glad to welcome to our Community on March 29th. the newspaper, CLARENVILLE PACKET. Our best wishes are extended to the Editor, Mr. Barry Wheaton, of our new addition. This paper brought fond memories to one of our elderly men of this place, whose father was Cecil Currier many years ago when he ran the mail from Clarenville to Heart’s Content in a boat named the “Packet”. Now the Packet is still connected with Clarenville. Miss Brennie Baker sells the paper and every one enjoys reading it.
Mr. Eleazer Howse has returned home after spending some time in the Grace Hospital St. John’s. Mr. Howse got injured last November 27th when he received some burns after coming in contact with live wires while in care of a crew of men working near the hospital in Come By Chance. He spent some time in the Walwyn Hospital and was convalescing at home before entering the Grace Hospital where he under went surgery and skin graft to his arms and foot. It will be a few weeks before he can resume work again. A speedy recovery goes to him from his friends. After such a narrow escape.
Mr. Eli Marsh St. John’s formerly of Hillview has also been discharged from the Grace Hospital after undergoing serious operation. His friends are glad to know that he is improving.
George Smith of Hillview has been transferred from Walwyn Hospital to the General Hospital St. Jehn’s. He was rushed there on March 27th. where immediate surgery had to be performed for gall bladder. Dr. Hanna performed the operation. He was in serious condition for two weeks but is slightly improving.
The young people of Hillview have recently formed a youth club so far they have been successful. At their first meeting thirty five young people attended. There are now fifty members. Their main effort is to provide recreation for themselves, as there is little or no amusement here.
The officers elected were Valmore Stoyles, President; Bram Stoyles, Vice – President; Lynette Avery, Secretary; Geraldine Churchill, Treasurer. Since the club was formed a Soup Supper and Parcel Post Sale was held in the Orange Hall, with help from their parents and friends. The proceeds were satisfactory. It is their aim to raise enough money to buy a building to use for their Youth Center. Much success and best wishes are extended to them in their efforts.
Mr. George Marsh, St John’s, who injured his foot some time ago is well and back to work again.
Mr. Robert Peddle Hodge’s Cove will celebrate his nineteenth birthday on April 21. Mr. Peddle is teaching in Hodge’s Cove and also layman in the Anglican Churches in Random South. His Mother Mrs. Doris Peddle will celebrate her birthday on April 8th.
Garry Loder celebrated his 17th birthday March 26th and his sister Mona her tenth birthday on April 3rd.
The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Loder was christened in the United Church here on Sunday, March 31st and was given the name Paula.
One of the first long-liners ever to be built in Trinity Bay, was built in Gooseberry Cove the past winter. Construction started last October by two brothers Willis and Edgar John Smith. The boat was launched on Saturday March 16th and was christened ‘”Freddie Marlene” by Mr. Ben Smith. The builder’s father, who broke a bottle of Champagne on the bow as it gracefully sled down from the beach in to the sea. About twenty men, women and children went for a trip in the new boat. An enjoyable day was spent, as there were men from different places to witness the event. Good Luck, best wishes and bumper trips are wished to the Smiths in the coming fishing season.
Mr. and Mrs. Ben Smith spent two weeks in St. John’s since their son George has been a patient in Hospital there.
Mrs. Arthur Churchill is also a patient at the Grace Hospital. A speedy recovery goes to her from her friends.
Mr. and Mrs. James Smith Eastport visited Mr. Smith’s brother in hospital, also his sisters Maisie Ploughman Clarenville and Velma Smith Gander, she was accompanied by David Brown.
Bram Stoyles celebrated his 18 birthday on April 28th.
Tony Stoyles was six years old March 29th. A group of children gave him a party at his home and a very enjoyable afternoon was spent.
Congratulations to Mrs. Virtue Drover Hodges Cove who celebrated her birthday on April 5th.
The new United Church Caplin Cove was officially opened on Sunday March 31st. Present for the opening were the following clergymen: Dr. Butt, Rev. Legrow, Rev. Pye and Rev. Parsons of Little Heart’s East Charge. A large congregation was present despite the inclement weather.
Douglas Jacobs celebrated his 18 birthday on April 23rd. He is presently working in Toronto.
Shirley Spurrell, Come By Chance was seven years old on March 20. Dianne Chaulk Toronto was three on March 25.
Abraham Spurrell of Butter Cove is at present in St. John’s taking treatment.
Maxwell Lambert of Southport has just completed a fishing boat for Mr. Frank Kelly. Mr. Kelly comes from Deer Hr. T. Bay and is now residing at Southport.
The G.B.S. Seals Butter Cove, Gooseberry ‘Cove and Southport combined beat Hodges Cove 9 to five in hockey April 16th. The game was played in Clarenville arena.
People of this community are busy. getting ready for fishing.
Alma Spurrell of Butter Cove celebrated her 18 birthday April 15th.
The boys from three communities in Trinity Bay organized a hockey team about a month ago. The team was given the name of the G.B.S. Seals. The G.B.S Seals have played several games over the past month as practise with Hatchet Cove, Brittannia, and Hodges Cove. They have played very well as a team, and hope to be successful next year as a team in the Trinity Bay League.
A Surprise Birthday Party was held at the home of Mrs. Marjorie Smith of Gooseberry Cove on April 13th for her sister Alma Spurrell of Butter Cove, who was eighteen years old on Easter Monday.
A good time was enjoyed by all her friends who attended.
A Red Cross Meeting was held at Mount Joy, L.OL. Hall on Good Friday, when three members, Leonard Stringer and Nathan Pond of Little Hearts Ease and Victor Smith of Hodges Cove were given the Red Cross degree. Visitors to the meeting were George Warren, George Martin and Wm. S. Whalen of St. John’s, Willis Stringer of Milton, and L. W. Stringer of Clarenville, and J. Morris of Goobies.
Congratulations are extended to Mr. and Mrs. William Stringer on the birth of a son at Walwyn Hospital Sunday April 14th.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Oates and daughter Debbie Lynn spent the Easter weekend with Mrs. Oates parents Mr. and Mrs. Eli Martin Little Hearts Ease.
Congratulations are extended to Mr. and Mrs. Jonah Doge formerly of Little Hearts Ease but now residing at Toronto, on the birth of a son recently.
The Sunday School teachers and children of the United Church held a very enjoyable Easter Program in the Church on Easter Sunday night, Mr. Parsons, Minister of the Church sang a solo, “The nail scarred hands” the Church was filled to capacity for the occasion.
Congratulations and best wishes are extended to Mrs. Eli Martin on the occasion of her birthday April 16th.
Members of the Loyal Orange Association attended a holy service at The Salvation Army Citadel Sunday afternoon at Little Hearts Ease. Brigadier Russell conducted the Service which was well attended.
Mrs. Hayward Martin of Corner Brook visited her Mother Mrs. Sarah Chaulk during the Easter holidays. Mrs. Chaulk had been confined to her home for awhile with a broken leg but is now recovered.
Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Albert Drodge for the Easter weekend were their daughter Mrs. Alfred Drodge her husband and daughter Lynn and son Glenn from St. John’s, also their daughter Mrs. Gilbert Rodigue her husband and son Paul from Clarenville.
Miss Gloria Stringer who is teaching school at Charleston, B. Bay arrived home Thursday to spend the Easter holidays with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Simon Stringer. Arriving with her for the holidays is Karen Quinton, of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Quinton of Charleston.
Bloomfield takes title in Trinity Bay league
Bloomfield captured the Trinity Hockey League Champion at the Clarenville stadium on April 16th by defeating Arnold’s Cove 11-6.
For Bloomfield, who finished third at the end of the regular season, it was a four game sweep.
Bloomfield opened the scoring, early in the first period and fired home five before Arnolds Cove answered three of them late in the period to trail by two goals after the first twenty minutes of action.
In the second period Bloomfield added two more to their count, while Arnold’s Cove added one.
Horace Noftall was the big gun for the champs with four goals while two each were added by Don Diamond and Jack Little. Single markers came from Don Lane, Clarence Parsons, and Calvin Butt.
Frank Trowbridge scored two for the losers with singles coming from Ben Trowbridge, Dave Hickey, Ben Warren, and Dave Hanam.
Referee Lorne Smith called ten penalties in the game including fighting majors to Fenton Oldford of Bloomfield and Derek Hollett of Arnolds Cove.
The manager of the stadium, Cecil Strong, said 1249 persons paid to see the game a record attendance for a hockey game. The previous record was 1199.
Following the game the seasons award winners were named with the team trophy going to Bloomfield and accepted by Captain Don Lane.
The top goalie was Willis Peddle of Hodges Cove.
Clarence Parsons of Bloomfield was the rookie of the year and the Most Gentlemanly Player award went to Ray Greening of Port Blanford.
Cyril Stringer of Hodges Cove was the best defenceman and the award for the most improved played went to Ben Trowbridge. The top scorer for the year was Don Lane.
The Most Valuable Player Award went to Dave Snook of Sunnyside while Barry Holloway, Goalie for Bloomfield, was the MVP winner in the playoffs and received the Molson Award.
The team trophy was donated by Chesley Mercer of Sunnyside for competition in the Trinity Bay Hockey League and presented by his son, Allistor Mercer.
