HILLVIEW – RANDOM

Quite a bit of unusual excitement was experienced in Hillview recently, when Mr. Alfred John Vey had in his possession a baby moose. The moose was found abandoned on the Bonavista Peninsula. Mr. and Mrs. Vey had many visitors on Sunday, especially the children who were anxious to see the small animal. Mr. Vey, who is Forest Inspector, looked after it for four days feeding it on milk from a bottle. It was about one week old. The moose was then taken away by van to St. John’s on Monday, June 17th.

Visitors here for the weekend June 15th to 16th were: Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Stoyles and family, Gander; Mr. and Mrs. William Baker, St. John’s; Mr. and Mrs. Chesley Pitman and son; Mr. and Mrs. Lester Pitman; Mr. and Mrs. David Stoyles, all of Gander; Mr. and Mrs. James Parrott, St. John’s; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Stoyles, Glenwood; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Forward, St. John’s.

Mr. and Mrs. Alfred J. Vey celebrated their 38th wedding anniversary on June 18th. We wish them many more happy anniversaries.

Friends of Mrs. George Loder, Come By Chance are sorry to hear of the death of her father who passed away suddenly in England. Mrs. Loder had been in St. John’s and made reservations to visit her parents in England. Sincere sympathy is extended from her friends in Hillview. Her son Derek is home on his holidays. He is serving in the Air Force.

Velma Smith, who was injured in a car accident at Gander on May 31st is back to work, but has to go to St. John’s in the near future for further treatment on her face for injuries caused by the accident.

A concert was held at Hodges Cove by the people of St. Jones. A very enjoyable time was spent by everyone present. Proceeds of the concert amounted to over one hundred dollars. The ladies of the A.W.A. served hot dogs and refreshments by which over fifty dollars was collected. This money will be put towards the Church fund.

Mrs. Olivia Drover of Hodges ‘Cove was presented with a certificate for her forty years of service in the Church of England Association. The presentation was made by Reverend Morley Boutcher at the evening service in St. Mary’s Church, Hodges Cove on Sunday, June 9. On the following Monday night a dinner was served in her honor in St Mary’s Hall by the ladies of the A.W.A. A large gathering attended. Cards were played besides other attractions and every one enjoyed themselves tremendously. A beautiful designed tea cloth was sold on tickets among the members and Mrs. Drover was the winner. She is the wife of Albert Drover (Sr.).

Fish have struck in at Butter Cove and the men there are doing well, but those who are fishing at Happy Adventure are still having poor luck so far.

Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Spurrell of Butter Cove who are home from Toronto on their holidays will soon be returning. Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Isaacs and their two children, David and Learne, are visiting Mrs. Isaacs’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Benson, Little Heart’s Ease. Mrs. Jessie Avery, Long Beach is a patient in the Walwyn Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Avery, Long Beach celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 10th. They were married in June, 1918, in the Methodist Church, Long Beach, by Reverend D. E. Freake. Their grand daughter, Leona Pitcher, visited them from Toronto. She returned on June 25th by plane from Gander.

Celebrating birthdays are Mrs. John Avery (Jr.) Deep Bight. She will be 58 on July 21st. Her grand daughter Dianne Avery was two on June 3rd. Dennise Avery will be four July 7th. Darrell Avery will be seven on July 18th and Terry Avery will celebrate his birthday on July 15th.

Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Crocker, Swift Current, visited Mrs. Crocker’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Francis Norris, North West Brook. Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Crocker formerly of Swift Current who have been living in Quebec for the past four wears have moved to Bango, Maine, USA. Mr. Crocker is serving in the Air Force.

Celebrating birthdays at North West Brook are; Sharon Baker, was 12 on June 15th and Raymond Cordall Warren, who was 2 years old on July 2nd.

Mr. and Mrs. Caleb Cooper, Queen’s Cove are visiting friends in Gander. Mr. and Mrs. Willie Chipp left for LaScie recently. Bax and Jim Smith and their families are home for a few weeks. Bax has been teaching at Blaketown for the past three. years They will be returning again in September. Bax was successful in passing his exams. In University he studied night courses the past winter on his second grade. He and Jim will attend university during the summer months on their third year. Our best wishes go to them in, their studies.

GOOSEBERRY COVE

Passed away on June 21st, Mr. Richard Seaward in his 84th year Leaving to mourn his sad loss are 4 sons, Edgar, Ernest, Jack and Simion of Gooseberry Cove; one daughter Mary, Mrs. Moses Spurrell. Butter Cove; one sister Mrs. Lillian Cummings residing at Toronto and one brother William Seaward at Clarenville; also 37 Grandchildren and 33 Great grand children. Funeral from United Church Southport on June 23 conducted by Mr. Peddle United Church minister of Hillview. The family expresses a sincere thank you to all who helped in anyway during their sorrow.

Passed away at Southport on June 23rd. Mr. Samuel Lambert in his 85th year, leaving to mourn besides his wife are 5 sons, Elizah, Ulysses, Henry Thomas and Wilson of Southport and Noah residing at Sunnyside; also 2 daughters Mrs. Sarah Ann Spurrell, Butter Cove and Mary, Mrs. James Pearce Clarenville; 27 grandchildren and 17 Great grand children. Funeral from Anglican Church conducted by Rev. Burton.

The family expresses a sincere thank you to all who helped in anyway during their sorrow.

Birthday greetings to Mrs. Joannah Seaward who celebrated her 85th birthday on June 24th; Mr. Ambrose Seaward celebrated his 84th birthday July 4th; Miss Veronica FitzGerald her 17th on July 4th; Hughie Smith his 5th on July 7th; and Miss Joyce Seaward celebrated her 16th birthday on June 2lst.

Kevin FitzGerald, Lemuel Seaward and Sterling Seaward have returned to Toronto after spending two weeks holidays with their parents at Gooseberry Cove.

Mrs. Eli Dean and 18 month old son Roger of Wabush spent a week visiting her parents Mr. and Mrs. Simon Seaward, Gooseberry Cove, also her husband’s parents Mr. and Mrs. Simon Dean Southport. She returned to Wabush on Jure 24th.

Mr. and Mrs. Hollis Langdon and family from London, Ontario visited Mrs. Langdon’s sister Mrs. Annie Seaward of Gooseberry Cove. It was the first time they have seen each other for 19 vrs.

Mrs. Andrew Seaward from the Goulds visited her Mother Mrs. Joannah Seaward over the weekend of June 22nd.

Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Spurrell have arrived from Toronto to spend their holidays with their parents Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Spurrell of Butter Cove and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Smith of Hodges Cove. Also home from Toronto on holidays is Mr. Gerald Spurrell of Butter Cove.

Mr. Alphonsus Seaward of Gooseberry Cove and Mr. Lawrence Smith of Southport left for Toronto on June 22nd to seek employment.

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Simon Seaward, Gooseberry Cove who celebrated their 34th Wedding Anniversary on June 29th.

Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Smith formerly of Gooseberry Cove have taken up residence at Come-By- Chance where Mr. Smith is employed.

Brenda Seaward one year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Seward is still a patient at the Janeway Hospital. Brenda has spent quite some time there.

Mrs. Arthur Spurrell of Butter Cove who was a patient at Walwvn Hospital has returned home. We wish her a speedy recovery.

Birthday greetings to Mr. George Langor who will celebrate his birthday on July 9th.

There were 12 students who wrote grade 9 exams, 4 grade 10, and 1 grade 11. Hope they will be successful.

Miss Florece Spurrell of Butter Cove is attending Summer School in St. John’s. We wish her every success in the future.

GOOSEBERRY COVE

Mr. Edgar Seward has returned home from St. Clare’s Hospital where he was receiving treatment on his eyes.

Mr. and Mrs. Ben Smith Sr., and Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Smith and son Freddie motored to Grand Falls on Sunday to visit Mr. and Mrs. Max Davis of that town. Miss Hilda Davis granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Smith returned home with them to spend her summer holidays at Gooseberry Cove.

Visitors to Gooseberry Cove recently are, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Sceviour and two children, Lisa and Bobby, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Seward and two children Cheryl Ann and Clyde, Mr. and Mrs. Esli Rogers and Mr. Wilson Rogers from Trinity Bonavista Bay. Mr. Luke Pitcher formerly of this community visited here, for the first time since 1940. Mr. Pitcher is now residing in Ontario. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Dawe and son Wayne of Toronto are visiting Mrs. Dawe’s parents Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Spurrel at Butter Cove.

Terry Seward celebrated his 6 birthday on July 5. Olga Smith celebrated her 2nd birthday on July 18.

Father Hollohan from Grand Falls is visiting his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Smith.

CBC cameramen were at Gooseberry Cove on July 10 interviewing the fishermen for the program Land and Sea.

Miss Madeline Fitzgerald and Miss Joan Seward will be leaving for Toronto on July 19. Mr. Alvin Lambert of Southport caught a live Dolphin in his trap on Saturday July 6.

Celebrating birthdays are: Mrs. George Critch, Mrs. Alfred Stoyles, Mr. Avalon Marsh, Dennis Marsh, Cindy Loder, Mrs. Mildred Vey, Mrs. Edmund Stoyles, Garry Loder from Dunville. A party was held for him at the home of Mrs. Moses Price.

Tom Baker, who has arrived home for his holidays. He is serving in the Navy.

Faith Baker, Mrs. Gertie Seward of Gooseberry Cove and Roger Spurrell. A party was held for Roger at the home of his foster parents. Many of his young friends attended. Mr. Edwin Avery of Long Beach, Mrs. Myra Smith, Hodges Cove, Mr. Charles Whalen of Caplin Cove, Jeffrey Critch.

Reverend Mr. Clarke and family have taken up residence in the United Church Manse, Hillview. His first service was held in the United Church on Sunday, July 7. He has succeeded Mr. Peddle who has moved to Whitbourne charge. We hope that Mr. Clarke and his family will like to be here. We are glad to welcome them in our midst.

Mr. William Smith, North West Brock, was taken ill a few weeks ago. A speedy recovery is extended to him from his friends. Visiting Mr. and Mrs. William Smith were Mrs. Smith’s brother Mr. Eli Baker and his wife of Deer Lake.

Mr. Moses Price and Mrs. Solvanus Marsh attended the funeral of their uncle Mr. James Seward, Gooseberry Cove. Mr. Samuel Lambert of Southport also passed away. Both were elderly gentlemen.

The United Church at Hodges Cove was the scene of a very pretty wedding on Friday, June 28, when Gerald Spurrell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Spurrell, Butter Cove was united in Holy Wedlock to Clarice daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Smith of Hodges Cove. The bride looked charming dressed in white satin with a long train, as she entered the church on the arm of her cousin, Lindo Smith, who was father giver. She carried a bouquet of red roses, and wore a head piece to match her dress. Her sister Marion Spurrell was maid of honor, while Linda Stringer, sister of the groom was bridesmaid. They both wore lime green. Douglas Spurrell, brother of the groom was best man, and brides boy was Stanley Smith, the bride’s brother. Ring-bearer was little Paul Spurrell, the groom’s brother and Debbie Seaward a niece was flower girl. Both children looked beautiful.

The bride’s mother wore pink, while the groom’s mother wore light blue. Both wore corsages to match. Mrs. Eliab Smith of Hodges Cove was organist. The double ring ceremony was performed by Rev. Harris of Shoal Harbour. Following the ceremony a motorcade headed by the bridal party drove to Great Hearts Ease: where a reception was held in the S.U.F. hall for over three hundred guests. The gifts received by the couple were numerous. They were costly and beautiful. After the reception a dance followed which was kept up till the early hours of the morning. Mr. and Mrs. Spurrell will leave soon for Toronto where they have been working. Gerald has worked there for over five years.

Best wishes are extended to them and Bon voyage over the sea of matrimony.

Douglas Spurrell, a brother will be returning to Toronto.

Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Spurrell, Butter Cove have returned to Toronto. They were here to attend the wedding of her sister Clarice.

On June 21, a party was held for Mr. and Mrs. Peddle, before their departure from Hillview charge. Twenty women gathered in the United Church School where tea was served. Mr. Peddle who has been here for two years will be missed as he and Mrs. Peddle were well liked by everyone. Mrs. Peddle’s sister who was visiting them at the time also attended the party. Every one had a very enjoyable time. Mr. Peddle gave a very inspiring speech and thanked the ladies for their kindness to him and his family. He also told them that they were sorry to be leaving, as they were very fond of the people. They have two boys. At the party the sum of twenty dollars was presented to them. The cards were read by Mrs. Alfred John Vey. The people wish to welcome their new minister, Rev. Clarke and his family.

Shortly before school closed in June, a new Elementary School was opened in Eastport, Bonavista Bay. The school which has all modern facilities, cost one hundred and ninety thousand dollars.

Following the opening a social was held which lasted three nights and the sum of three thousand five hundred dollars was collected. This will go towards the school. There is also a high-school in Eastport.

A new teacher’s residence is now under construction.

Fishermen fishing out of Happy Adventure contacted your reporter and they are glad to report that fish struck in and they are all doing well, fishing from their long liners.
