On Palm Sunday April 7th Reverend Dr. and Mrs. Butt attended the evening service in the United Church Hillview. Dr. Butt is superintendent of the United Church and took part in the service with the minister Mr. H. Paddle. A fair congregation attended. The service was enjoyed by all.
On Easter Sunday the annual Easter program took place in the United Church by the Sunday School children under the direction of Mrs. Alfred John Vey, the Superintendent of the Sunday School, who was also organist. She appreciated being assisted with the music by Mrs. Albert Stoyles and Miss Jeannette Frost. The program consisted of 32 items including recitations, exercises and pantomimes. Also five singings by some of the ladies who so generously offered to take part. The children are well trained by Mrs. Vey. Flowers were placed on the Altar in memory of loved ones. A large congregation was present. The offering was satisfactory which will go towards the Sunday School.
A combined flower and dedication service was held in St. Mary’s Church Hodges Cove by Rev. Morley Boutcher at the evening service on Easter Sunday. Many beautiful fresh flowers were placed there in memory of loving friends. Two brass collection plates were dedicated in memory of George and Mary Hiscock (of Hodge’s Cove) and was given to the church by their daughter Mrs. Bew Smith of Hillview. The church which is two years old was filled, and the members of the church appreciated the gift which was so costly and beautiful and so thoughtfully given to the church.
The ladies of AW.A. of Great Heart’s Ease held a turkey supper tea and sale in the S.U.F. Hall Gooseberry Cove on Easter Monday. The proceeds amounted to $280.00 which will go towards the church. The social was followed by a dance and the music was supplied by the Cortation band from Southport. An enjoyable evening was spent by everyone present. There were also donations received from people of other settlements including a crocheted cloth from a friend in Hillview, which was sold on tickets and the amount collected was $21.45 donated in memory of relatives.
Miss Alma Spurrell, Butler Cove was tendered a surprise birthday party at the home of her sister, Mrs. Harvey Smith Gooseberry Cove where twenty of her friends met for the event. It was Alma’s eighteenth birthday. Many lovely gifts were opened and cards read by Mrs. Harvey Smith. Cards were played and a very enjoyable evening was spent by all present. Alma is employed in St. Joha’s and was home for Easter.
Mr. and Mrs. Uriah Churchill, Hillview has been confined to their home for some time but they are both improving. Mrs. W. W. Frost spent some time in Walwyn Hospital but is home and improving. Mr. Charles Gilbert North Harbour underwent surgery in the General Hospital.
The funeral of Mrs. Jessie Jackson took place in Bishop’s Falls on March 28th. Mrs. Jackson who was sixty six years of age passed away in Toronto on March 24th. She leaves to mourn besides her husband Philip, two sons John and William. Three daughters – Bertha, Florence and Sarah, former residents of Hillview they moved to Bishop’s Falls some years ago and later moved to Toronto where they lived until Mrs. Jackson’s death. Her family accompanied the remains to Bishop’s Falls for burial which took place in the Pentecostal Cemetery. Relatives attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Loder, St. John’s, Mr. George Loder, of Come-by-Chance, Mrs. Maggie Marsh and Mrs. Rita Stoyles.
Mr. Eleazer Howse who underwent surgery and skin graft at the Grace Hospital, St. John’s is well and back to work again.
Friends of Miss Marion Avery are sorry to hear that she is a patient in the Orthapaedic Hospital, St. John’s.
The whole community of Hillview was shocked to hear of the death of Miss Margaret Currie of Clarenville. Miss Currie was well known and well liked by all who knew her while she was on the nursing staff at Walwyn Hospital. Most of the residents of Hillview paid respects by attending the funeral.
Mrs. George Marsh is improving after receiving treatment in St. Clare’s Hospital. Mrs. Leah Stanford has returned home after spending the winter with her son John in St. John’s.
Mr. and Mrs. Gideon Benson is visiting friends in Grate’s Cove after spending the winter months with Mrs. Benson’s sister Miss Marion Avery.

Mrs. Laura Miller of St. Jones who has been living with friends in St. John’s visited her sister, Mrs. Naomi Price. They are at present visiting friends in St. John’s.
Mr. and Mrs. Willam Spurrell, Butter Cove, celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary on April 9th. They were married in St. Alban’s Anglican Church by Rev. James Pike. They have seven children.
Kevin Critch, Hillview will be 6 years old on May 23rd.
Mr. and Mrs. Wm. H. Stoyles have returned home after spending three weeks visiting their son Chesley in Scarborough Canada. While there they attended the wedding of their daughter Ruby in Toronto. She was married to Allan W. Russell. The wedding took place in Knox United Church in Agincourt. Mr. and Mrs. Stoyles also visited his brother Edgar in Glace Bay, N.S. and also spent a few days with their son Wilson at Gander before returning home.
Mr. and Mrs. Willie Chipps spent Easter week with Mr. Chipps relatives at La Scie White Bay.
Bram Stoyles was 18 years on April 28. He and his brother Reg spent Easter at Gander visiting their brother Wilson and friends.
Mr. Alfred John Vey who suffered from an injured foot is improving. Mr. and Mrs. Bruce, Isaacs visited Mrs. Isaac’s parents in Little Heart’s Ease. Kenneth Benson, Little Heart’s Ease will celebrate his 25th birthday on the second of May. He is presently working in Toronto.
Congratulations to Bill Drover of Hodge’s Cove on winning the fight with Earl Pilgrim on April 22.
Brenda Seward, one year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Aruthur Seward, arrived home April 30th after spending two months at the Janeway Hospital.
David Spurrell, three year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Spurrell, Southport, returned home recently after having two operations at the Janeway Hospital. David’s mother is also a patient at the Grace Hospital.
Mrs. Juanita Smith who was a patient at the Walwyn Hospital, Come-By-Chance returned home last week awaiting a bed in the Grace Hospital.
Mrs. Lillian Langor celebrated her 70th birthday on April 30th. Leroy Langor celebrated his 5th birthday on May 6th.
Glynn Seward celebrated his 1st birthday on May 6th.
Mr. Eric Dean of Southport who was fishing from the longliner Johnny Bonita in the Bonavista Bay area in Nov. 1967 lost a fleet of seven nets. When he returned to the area in April 1968, he found his nets in the same place he had set them in November.
First seal killed here this season was killed May 3rd by Pethley and George Langor.

The C.G.I.T. girls and children of the Sunday School of the United Church held a very enjoyable Mother’s Day Program in the Church Sunday evening. Mr. Parsons, minister of the church, sang the solo, I Never Can Forget The Day. The church was filled to capacity for the occasion. A collection of $10.00 was collected and given to the C.G.I.T. and Sunday School. Mrs. Roy Drodge and Miss Bobbit, teacher helped in making the occasion a success.
Mr. Roy Drodge spent a week’s holiday at home recently, he is employed by Bowaters at Glenwood. While on holiday he took Mrs. Drodge’s parents Mr. and Mrs. Allan Whalen of Caplin Cove to Old Perlican where they are spending the summer months with their three daughters Minnie, Mrs. Allan Squires, Ivy, Mrs. Ronald Barrett and Eva, Mrs. Gerald Barrett.
Mr. and Mrs. Albert Drodge motored to Terra Nova with their daughter Mrs. Gilbert Rodique, her husband, and son Paul last weekend to visit their son Albert on the Pinedale Farm.
A Mother’s Day program was held at the Salvation Army Citadel Sunday evening. It was well attended and enjoyed by all.
A house to house collection in aid of the Cancer Society was made recently at Little Hearts Ease. Collectors were Mrs. Linda Stringer, Mrs. Blanche Stringer, Mrs. Marion Stringer, Mrs. Miriam Vey, Mrs. Ruby Martin, Mrs. Matilda Price and Mrs. Simeon Stringer.
Gerald Stringer spent the May 4th weekend with his parents Mr. and Mrs. George Stringer. Gerald is engineer on the Sir Humphrey Gilbert.
Birthday greetings to Barry Stringer who celebrated his birthday May 6th.
Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Avery spent a weekend recently with their son James and his family at Hampden. With them also were their sons Maxwell and Avalon. Maxwell is employed by the E.P.A. at Torbay.

Mrs. Lily Pitcher of Winterton is at present visiting her sisters Mrs. Albert Stacey, Little Hearts Ease and Mrs. Thomas Baker, Hodges Cove and all her friends and relations.
The United Church women of Swift Current held their annual meeting and election of officers Saturday May 4th. Attending the meeting from Little Hearts Ease were the following ladies Mrs. George Stringer, Mrs. Roy Drodge, Mrs. Eli Martin, Mrs. Nicholas Vey and from Hodges Cove Mrs. Lindo Smith. Afternoon and night sessions were held, tea was served and the evening was enjoyed by all who attended.
Birthday greetings are extended to Alonzo Stringer who celebrated his 14th birthday May 18. He is the carrier for the Clarenville Packet in Little Hearts Ease.
A baby shower was held at the home of Mrs. Eli Martin May 8 for Mrs. Cecil Lambert, fifteen ladies attended the party. As the gifts were opened the cards were read by Mrs. Eli Martin. Guess Parcels were won by Mrs. Leonard Stringer, Mrs. George Stringer, Mrs. Lucy Martia and Mrs. Roland Smith. Tea was served and Mrs. Nicholas Avery got the prize for the lucky cup.
Birthday greetings are extended to Terry Lambert who was 5 years old May 10. Greetings are from his mom and dad, sisters and brothers.
Captain Gladys Stringer spent the Mother’s Day weekend with her mother Mrs. Annie Green. Capt. Stringer is dietician at the Grace Hospital. Mrs. Green is living with her son Mr. George Stringer.
A Mother’s Day Program was held at the United Church, Caplin Cove Sunday afternoon. The church was filled for the occasion. They have a lovely new church which was opened about a month ago.
Mr. Arthur Vey, who was attending University, spent a few days with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Vey before going to Toronto to work for the summer months.

Mrs. Gilbert Rodique of Clarenville visited her mother Mrs. Albert Drodge on Mother’s Day. Accompanying her was her son Paul.

Mrs. Leslie Avery spent the weekend with her sister, Mrs. Roy Drodge. She is employed at the Holiday Inn, Clarenville.
Birthday greetings are extended to Stanley Soper who celebrates his birthday May 16th.
It is reported that there is a good sign of fish the past few days, only two fishermen have their traps in the water. So far other fishermen are busy getting their traps ready for the fishery. Some of the fishermen have been lobster fishing – but the lobster don’t seem to be too plentiful.
Southport is a very busy spot those days as most of the fishermen have started fishing while more are getting ready their cod and lobster traps for this season’s catch. There are three long liners from this place. One, the “Johnny Bonita” Eric Dean Master and owner have gone to Bonavista Bay fishing. The other two are leaving soon.
At present fish, turbot and lobster are very scarce the worst experienced in a number of years. As for boat building there were 4 built here this winter, 3 of them are fishing boats. Howard Avery will be launching his boat next week. Grenville Soppia, who is residing at St. John’s, formerly of House Cove, had his cabin cruiser launched last week. She was built by Mr. Lambert of this place. People who celebrated their birthday in April are Mrs. Lillian Lambert 46 years, April 29; Kerth Lambert 15 April 22; Allison Lambert April 25 age 11.
Mrs. Lambert has 10 children, 1 daughter married to Obediah Spurrel Little Heart’s Ease, Jean working at Moreland Motel, son Gerald residing at Toronto.
Vincent Seward resident of this place who is now residing at Carbonear for the past 25 years paid a short visit to this place a week ago. We were all proud to see him.
The sad news was received here on April 28 of the sudden death of Kenneth Hastings, Brandford, Ont., who was killed instantly on April 21 when he was struck by a passing car. Mr. Hastings accompanied by his brother Melvin had just left the Church after attending the marriage of their brother Ralph. His brother Melvin is in critical condition in hospital. He was married to the former Lovetta Vey of Hillview, the daughter of Mrs. Mildred and the late Kenneth Vey. She has three children, two girls and a boy.
Bill Drover of Hodges Cove was given a hearty welcome on April 24th when he was met at Welkomin by his friends on his way home from St. John’s. He was escorted home by Motorcade. A Surprise Party was given him by the ladies of Hodge’s Cove in St. Mary’s Hall. Supper was served and Chairman for the evening was Mr. Lester Vey Anglican teacher, who was also Guest Speaker. Mr. Vey introduced Reverend Boutcher who also spoke. The Chairman then asked Mr. Sam Drover to speak. In his closing remarks, Mr. Drover announced that he would like to take the political crown on June 25th in the riding of Trinity-Conception, as Bill Drover took the crown when he fought Earl Pilgrim. Bill is Sam’s cousin and boxing champion of Newfoundland and Eastern Canada. He was brought up and educated in Hodge’s Cove.
Mrs. Lillian Piercy, Winterton visited her sister Mrs. Thomas Baker Hodge’s Cove. Mrs. Bertha Drover Hodge’s Cove left on Friday May 3rd for Toronto. Her son and his wife and baby were home. Mrs. Drover and her daughter-in-law went, but their son will be going back later. They were on their holidays.
Mr. Silvanus Marsh celebrated his 66th birthday on April 27th. His granddaughter Marina Parsons celebrated hers on April 29th. Robert_Spurrell (Jr.) Butter Cove was on May 21st.
The marriage of Wayne Drover of Hodge’s Cove to Joanne Stringer of Caplin Cove took place in the United Church at Caplin Cove recently. The reception was held in St. Mary’s Hall Hodge’s Cove. Wayne is teaching in the Anglican School at Southport.
Mrs. Eliol Drover has been seriously ill for some time. Her sons Harvy, Robert, and Leander came home to see her, also her daughters Effie, Alma, Mary, and Doreen. Leander is Corporal in the Army and is stationed at Calgary.
News was received in Hillview on May 2nd of the tragic death in Dunville Placentia Bay of Mrs. Eli Loder who died when fire desroyed their home in early morning. Mr. Loder formerly of Hillview, rescued his son (an only child) and two other children, who happened to be staying with them for a short time. But Mrs. Loder was trapped and was found dead in her bed. She was forty years old and was the former Bessie Green of Tacks Beach Placentia Bay. Mr. Loder is employed on a CNR boat. Sincere sympathy is extended to him in his sad bereavement. Funeral service was held in Burin.
Death visited Hodge’s Cove on May 1st and claimed for its own the life of Mrs. Minnie Murphy. Mrs. Murphy was born at Gooseberry Cove 84 years ago. She has been living at Hodge’s Cove with her daughter Mrs. William J. Peddle for a number of years. She was a very staunch Church Worker, and was a member of the A.W.A. of Hodge’s Cove and also a member of Great Heart’s Ease A.W.A. Members of both places attended in a body to pay their last respects to an old lady who was much liked and respected by everyone who knew her. Since she has been living at Hodge’s Cove she did much handiwork for both Churches including cushions and crocheted cloths which was sold to raise funds for the Churches. She leaves to mourn one son Joseph Spurrell of Butter Cove and three daughters Olivia (Mrs. Albert Drover) Hodge’s Cove, Sarah (Mrs. Robert Spurell) Butter Cove and Annie (Mrs. William J. Peddle) Hodge’s Cove with whom she resided. The funeral took place from her daughter’s home to the Anglican Church. She was laid to rest in the Anglican Cemetery Hodge’s Cove. Burial Service was conducted by Reverend Mr. Boutcher of Random Mission. Sincere sympathy goes to the family in the loss of a Mother.

Mr. Edgar Spurrell Butter Cove Butter Cove will celebrate his 66th birthday June 4th. Mrs. Spurrell, her 67th on June 24th. Their grandson Ronnie Smith Sunnyside will be 4 June 2. Ronnie is the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Weldon Smith.
Geraldine Langos Gooseberry Cove will be 10 years old June 10.
A Divine Service was held in The Salvation Citadel Little Hearts Ease for the School children on Sunday morning May 5th. A special address was given the children by Colonel Ross and in the afternoon the 36th Anniversary of The Salvation Army was observed by a Citizens Rally being held. A very large congregation attended. The Citadel was filled to capacity, present for the occasion were provincial Commander Colonel Ross, accompanied by Mrs. Ross, Brigadier and Mrs. Hickman. They supported the Commander together with Brigadier and Mrs. Russell. Also present for the Service were Reverend Mr. and Mrs. Boutcher Anglican Minister of Random Mission. Rev. Boutcher read the Scripture and Mr. Parsons United Minister of Little Heart’s Ease Charge. During the Service a duet was sung by Brigadier Russell and his daughter Catherine which was enjoyed by the Congregation. A message of greeting sent to them by Mr. Sam Drover of Hodge’s Cove was read by Brigadier Hickman. Mr. Drover received an invitation but owing to unforeseen circumstances could not attend the Service.
Mrs. Jessie Spurrell, Windsor, has been sick for some time, she was formerly of Hillview.
Mrs. Nora Marsh who has been a patient in St. Clare’s Hospital for some time is out and feeling much better.
Bax and Jean Smith and family of Blaketown spent the weekend May 3rd-5th visiting their parents in Hillview and North Harbour.
Barry Smith Blaketown celebrated his 10th birthday on May 5th. May he enjoy many more.
A party was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Drover of Hodge’s Cove on May 6th in honor of their 2nd Wedding Anniversary. Music and singing was enjoyed. Cards were also played. A very enjoyable evening was spent which lasted till the wee hours of morning. We wish Mr. and Mrs. Drover many more happy Wedding Anniversaries.
Mr. Alex Crosbie St. John’s was a visitor to Hillview recently and was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Smith.
Mr. and Mrs. William Cran and family Windsor visited Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Frost.
