Hillview – Random
Mr. and Mrs. Silvanus Marsh received the sad news of the tragic death on July 25th of their daughter Clara, Mrs. Robert Carey of Baie Verte who lost her life in a head on truck and car collision near the intersection of the Springdale highway. Mr. and Mrs. Carey were returning home after attending a fire convention at Gander when the accident occurred. She was 33 years of age and leaves to mourn beside her husband and seven children, her parents, three brothers, John, Les Jo and Rendell Marsh and two sisters Lily Mrs. Fred Parsons and Eileen Marsh all of Hillview. Members of the family attended the funeral which took place at Baie Verte. Sincere sympathy is extended to the families in their sad bereavement.
A party was held at the home of Mrs. Jean Hillier on Saturday August 24th. on the occasion of her birthday. The party was a complete surprise to Mrs. Hillier, as she had been visiting friends, and on returning home found that a crowd of people had gathered her home and was ready to her as she entered. A very enjoyable evening was spent by all present. Cards were played and many beautiful and useful gifts were received. Your Correspondent joins with others in wishing her many more happy days. Her two sons Glen and Harry were successful in passing their public examinations.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Price visited Mr. Price’s sister-in-law Mrs. Naomi Price and his niece Mrs. Francis Stoyles. They left for their home in Clements-Ville, Annapolis Valley. Their niece Miss Selina Martin of St. John’s accompanied them on the trip. Roy Stoyles left recently for Churchill Falls where he has found employment. Eugene Loder is also working in Churchill Falls.
Mr. Fred Hillier celebrated his birthday on August 30.
FAREWELL PARTY
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hillier and Mr. and Mrs. Francis Stoyles attended a farewell party at North West Brook on August 29th. The party was for Mrs. Jean Klaus and her son Bill before leaving for the United States. They had been visiting- Mrs. Klaus’ parents Mr. and Mrs. John Vivian.
Mrs. Violet Strickland and two children Paul and Dawn of Mount Pearl are visiting her parents. Her husband is employed at Churchill Falls. She will stay all the winter.
Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Freddie Drover and Mr. and Mrs. Levi Churchill of Hodge’s Cove who celebrated their second Wedding Anniversary on August 27th. The double wedding took place in Toronto on August 27th 1966.
A birthday party was given Mrs. William H. Stoyles in the Schoolroom Hillview. A group of ladies gathered the Schoolroom. A very enjoyable evening was spent and she was presented in gifts of cash besides other gifts. We wish you more happy birthdays Mrs. Stoyles.
Friends of Mrs. William Smith and Mrs. Francis Norris of North West Brook are glad to know that they have both returned home and are feeling fine after undergoing surgery at The General Hospital St. John’s.
Visiting Mr. and Mrs. William Smith was her daughter-in-law and family from Toronto. They spent a month.
Mrs. Victor Burton and Patsy and Elaine Baker motored from Toronto to visit Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Baker.
Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Baker motored from Deer Lake. They were also guests of Mr. and Mrs. William Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Baker. They were accompanied by their family. Mr. Samuel Baker is employed at Churchill Falls with Checo Engineering Company.
Harvey Brown and Cyril Norris are also employed there.
Mrs. Wilson Branton celebrated her birthday on August 23rd.
Garry Baker arrived home after being employed for some time with Western Construction Company at Port aux Basques.
Daphne Brown spent a week visiting her brother Clarence at Winterton. Mrs. Samuel Brown and son Abram and daughter, Marjorie, Dianne and Verlie also visited Mrs. Brown’s son Clarence.
Mr. Llewellyn Balsom, Chapel Arm is visiting Mr. and Mrs. Don Balsom North West Brook.
Jeffrey Snelgrove will be one yr. old on Sept. 12th. His uncle Billie Curlew celebrated his the same day.
A Stork Shower was held for Mrs. Elazor Avery recently. A large gathering of ladies attended and many beautiful gifts were received. A very enjoyable evening was spent. Cards were read by Mrs. Yvonne Butt.
Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Bursey have moved to Creston. Mr. Bur- sey is employed with Curren and Briggs at Marystown. His son Wayne was successful in passing grade ten. He will attend School at Salt Pond where he will study grade eleven.
Mrs. Alex Brace is a patient at the General Hospital following surgery.
Mr. Claude Butt has arrived home from Churchill Falls. He is now employed at Trinity, Trinity Bay.
Mrs. Patsy Snelgrove celebrated her birthday on August 14th. and her daughter on August 20.
Miss Vicky Norris has returned home after spending some time visiting her sister in Bango, Maine, US.A.
Mr. Francis Norris spent a week in St. John’s while his wife was a patient in hospital.
Visiting Mrs. Ruby Baker were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Granter and daughter Deer Lake.
Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Luscombe and family Stephenville, Mr. and Mrs. George Chapel Stephenville. Calvin Baker is home on his holidays. He is working with the federal government, St. John’s. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Baker. Verna and Valerie Baker (twin sisters) spent a vacation with their aunt at Deer Lake. Andy Baker had a birthday on Sept. 4th. Bernice Baker the 11th, Mrs. Raymond Reid North Harbour Sept 13th and Wallace Baker the 16th. Wallace and his Mother Mrs. Ruby Baker motored to Deer Lake where they visited relatives. They were accompanied on the trip by her daughter Bernice and Faye Vivian.
WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
Mr. and Mrs. Don Balsom North West Brook celebrated their 26th Wedding Anniversary recently. Greetings come from her daughter Patsy Snelgrove and son ‘Bill Curlew Clarenville. Your Correspondent wish them many more happy anniversaries.
Mrs. Willie Chipp from LaScie, White Bay and son Darrell, visited her parents Mr. and Mrs. William H. Stoyles Hillivew. She was also accompanied by Willie’s cousin Maxine.
Mr. Clarence Peddle St. John’s is back to work after spending some time on D.V.A. Ward General Hospital. He served in the navy in the Second World War, and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Archer Peddle Hodge’s Cove.
Mrs. Cecil Peddle and two children also of Hodge’s Cove spent 2 weeks with her sister Mrs. Lorne Kirby. Mr. Kirby is Principal of The Anglican School Harbour Grace.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Smith and two children Bonnie and Michael spent a few days with Mr. Smith’s sister Mrs. Annie Drover Halifax.
Little Randy Drover is home after spending some time with his brother Harvey and family at Toronto.
A Stork Shower was held for was held for Cove. Some lovely gifts were received. Games were played and an enjoyable evening was spent by all.
A group of friends gathered at the home of Mr. Alex Peddle Sr. and tendered him a surprise party in honor of his birthday. Cards were played, besides other attractions. Mrs. Olivia Drover and Mrs. Doris Balsom were the lucky ones to win the prizes. He received many useful gifts.
Friends of Mrs. Alex Peddle Sr. and Mrs. Douglas Strong of Clarenville are glad to know that they are home and feeling fine after undergoing minor surgery at the Walwyn Hospital. The Peddles are from Hodge’s Cove.

Mr. Cyril Smith, Clarenville celebrated his birthday in August. May he enjoy many more.
Mr. Joseph G. Smith Gooseberry Cove also had a birthday in August.
Wesley United Church Caplin Cove was the scene of a very pretty wedding on July 26th when Sophie May of Pool’s Cove was united in marriage to Lloyd Spurrell son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Spurrell of Hodge’s Cove. The bride looked lovely dressed in floor length gown of white satin with veil and head-piece to match as she entered the Church carrying a bouquet of red roses, and leaning on the arm of Nathaniel Whalen, who also gave her in marriage. Mrs. Rose Whalen sister of the bride from Caplin Cove was Maid of Honor, while Mrs. Elsie Strong the groom’s sister from Clarenville and Mrs. Gertie Smith a friend from Goose berry Cove were bridesmaids. They were dressed in Aqua. Supporting the groom was his brother Bill, while another brother Sandy, and Douglas Strong brother-in-law were bridesboys. The groom’s little brother Lester was ring bearer, and Bonnie Smith daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Smith, Hodge’s Cove was flower girl-train-bearer. She wore a pale blue dress, with white head piece white shoes and gloves and carried a beautiful bouquet. The groom’s mother wore a two-piece lace suit of pink rose, with hat and corsage-to match. Mrs. June Whalen was organist, she wore light blue. While the register was being signed, Miss Eleanor Baker sang “Oh perfect love” following the double ring ceremony which was performed by Reverend Bailey, a reception was held in St. Mary’s Hall Hodge’s Cove for over one hundred guests. The toast to the bride was proposed by Rev Bailey. Andrew Peddle was Master of Ceremonies. A dance follow ed which was kept up till morning. Best Wishes go to the happy couple for many years of wedded happiness.
TAKEN ILL
Tom Baker was stricken suddenly ill while spending his furlough with his family. He received treatment in Walwyn Cottage Hospital before leaving for Halifax where he is serving in the Navy. On his arrival to Halifax he had to be conveyed by ambulance from the Airport where he underwent immediate surgery for appendicitis.
He has joined his ship H.M.S. Gatineau, but it will be some time before he is well enough to perform his duty. He is the son of Alex and the late Annie Baker.
Members of the AWA of Random Mission met in the Orange Hall Hillview on August 28 for their District Annual Meeting. Members of all branches attended. Also Reverend Boutcher of Hodge’s Cove. After the meeting came to a close supper was served.
The Church Service was held in the Anglican Church North West Brook at 7:30 p.m. Special guests were Reverend and Mrs. White from Whitbourne Mission. The Sermon was delivered by Reverend White.
Visiting Mrs. Maggie Marsh for the holidays were her son George and family and Mr. John Hearn of St. John’s.
Congratulations to Maurice Baker on passing grade ten exams.
Mrs. Maud Gilbert celebrated her birthday recently. Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert will leave shortly for Toronto where they will attend the wedding of their daughter Mildred.
The Youth Centre which was organized here in March is progressing favourably. Some young people from outside Hillview have joined. The members held a Social in the Orange Hall on August 30th. Cards were played also bingo. Prizes for the Card Game were won by Mrs. Woodrow Churchill, Cris Stoyles, and Reg Stoyles. Jeanette Frost won Bingo. A satisfactory sum of money was realized, which will be put towards the Youth Centre.
Mr. Avalon Marsh has been transferred to the C.N.R. Boat Bonavista. He spent seventeen yrs working with the railway, but this is his first time being on a Coastal boat.
Mrs. Absalom Marsh has had the cast removed from her foot, but is still wearing bandage. Mrs. Marsh injured her foot six weeks ago and has been wearing a cast until recently.
Mondella Marsh was ten years old on Sept. 8. Her brother Stuart will celebrate his on Sept. 17.
Mrs. Jeannette Stacey is home and feeling fine after being a patient in the Walwyn Hospital.
Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Moses Price was their daughter and her husband Mr. and Mrs. Bill Rundell of Halifax and two children. They were accompanied by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Russell. One of the children a 3-yr. old boy became ill and had to be treated at Walwyn Hospital. They visited friends in Gander and Windsor before returning to their home. Mrs. Moses Price visited Mrs. Rebecca Smith at Gander.
Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Stoyles are home after spending some months with his sister in Gander.
Visiting Mrs. Leah Stanford are her daughter Marion and husband also her daughter Dorothy and son Bobby. They are from the USA. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Stanford and Mr. John Stamford, and Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Dyke also visited Mr. and Mrs. Stanford.
Mr. and Mrs. Willie Avery visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Abram Avery. They also spent a holiday with his brother Pleamon at Catalina.
A farewell party was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Moses Price on August 30th for her daughter and husband before leaving for their home in Halifax. A group of people gathered and lunch was served. Games were played and everyone enjoyed themselves.
Rosella Price celebrated her birthday on August 27th.
STORK SHOWER
A Stork Shower was held for Mrs. Lloyd Peddle at her home in Hodge’s Cove. Twenty women attended. Some lovely gifts were received which were opened by Mrs. Virtue Peddle who also read the Cards. Cards were played and the prize was won by Mrs. Susie Peddle, the oldest member present. A very pleasant evening was spent by all present.
Miss Elaine Peddle celebrated her birthday on September 19th. She is teaching in Hodge’s Cove. She has completed two years in university. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Peddle Hodge’s Cove. Her two uncles, Herbert Spurrell and Joseph Spurrell celebrates their birthdays the same day. Congratulations.
Andrew Peddle is teaching at Gooseberry Cove.
Friends of Mr. William J. Peddle gave him a surprise party at his ‘home on the occasion of his birthday. He was presented with some useful and costly gifts. Cards were played and Mrs. Alex Peddle Sr. won the prize. Lunch was served. Everyone enjoyed themselves. Attending the party was his nephew Corporal Sandy Spurrell. The party was kept up till the early hours of morning.
Miss Rosalind Drodge of Little Hearts Ease will enter university for her fourth year. Her sisters Judy and Lavinia were successful in passing their courses at Vocational Trade School in Clarenville. Judy is employed in the Bank of Nova Scotia, Clarenville. Lavinia is working in the office at Walwyn Hospital. Another sister Thelma was successful in passing grade 9. They are the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Eldred Drodge, Little Hearts Ease.
Mrs. Ben Smith Hillview received the sad news of the death by accidental shooting in Maryland, US.A. of her cousin Doris Enos. She was the former Doris Lynch of St. John’s and the youngest child of the late Gilbert and Annie Lynch. Her Mother lives at Paradise, Conception Bay, but since the tragic death occured, she is staying with her son Albert on Forest Road St. John’s. Reports from Butter Cove tells us that the fishermen there have stowed away their fishing gear and some of the men have found employment elsewhere.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert Stoyles have left for Labrador City where he has been employed for over 5 years.
Mrs. Willie Chipp and little boy Darrell and Maxine have left for their home in LaScie after spending their holidays with their parents in Hillview.
Mr. Chesley Goobie and Mr. Rex Goobie are building a house for Wilbert Stoyles. There are several other new homes under construction.
David Brown Gander who was injured in a car accident in May went back to work on August 26.
David Brown, Velma Smith, Mrs. Janet Brown and daughter were visitors to Hillview also visiting were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Churchill Windsor.
Mr. and Mrs. Watson Dyke and family from Gander visited Mrs. Dyke’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Benson.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Vokey left Hillview on Aug. 2nd. for their home in Toronto. Mrs. Vokey’s Aunt, Mrs. Charles Eddy accompanied them on the trip. She will be staying for a month before returning home. Leroy Eddy has re turned home from Churchill Falls where he has been employed for some months.
Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Frost have returned home from Grand Falls after spending a few weeks holidays with their daughter and other relatives and friends.
Mr. Eliol Baker and his sister Mrs. Leanie Smith have left for Windsor. She will spend some time with her nephew Gower Baker before returning to her in the US.A.
Visiting Mrs. Raymond Frost were her Mother Mrs. Florence Goobie St. John’s, also her brothers, Glen and Scott Goobie. Also visiting Mrs. Frost were Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Penney and son Chris.

Mr. William H. Stoyles received the sad news of the death of his nephew Paul Turner of Glace Bay N.S. who died following a motor accident. He was 19 years of age. His brother Lloyd was also injured in the same accident, but has been released from hospital and is improving. The boy’s Mother was the former Annie Stoyles, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William James Stoyles.
Celebrating birthdays are Velma Smith her 19th on Aug. 3. Sheila Churchill her 19th on Aug. 16th. Valmore Stoyles, Patsy Eddy Aug. 8. She was 11 years old. Clifford Avery Aug. 16th. eleven years.
Mr. and Mrs. Garfield Stuckless and 6 children visited Mrs. Stuckless’ mother, Mrs. Louise Avery, also her brother Donald Avery and friends. They were from Bishop’s Falls.
Mrs. Minnie Peddle of St. John’s speat a few weeks at Hodge’s Cove also her son Douglas and his wife and child. Mrs. Peddle is the widow of the late Harvey Peddle of Hodge’s Cove.
Gooseberry Cove
Congratulations to Miss Florence Spurrell of Butter Cove on passing Grade XI Exams. She also passed in summer school. Florence is now teaching at Rencontre East.
Fredrick Dale Smith, 3 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Smith, Gooseberry Cove escaped serious injury on Sunday Sept. 1st. when he pluged in a washer and put his hand in the wringer which took his arm through the wringer to his shoulder. He was taken to the Wal- wyn Hospital where X-Rays showed no broken bones only bruises.
Paul Smith 9 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Uriah Smith Gooseberry Cove fell down Friday, Aug. 30th., and broke his arm, He now has it in a cast.
Mrs. Annie Benson of Little Hearts Ease entered the General Hospital St. John’s, Sept. 2nd., for treatment.
Mr. Abraham Spurrell of Butter Cove entered the Sanatorium on Aug. 30th. His many friends of Butter Cove, Gooseberry Cove and Southport wish him a speedy recovery.
Mr. and Mrs. Felix Pike and daughter Kathy of Halifax, Nova Scotia are visiting Mrs. Pikes’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Seward, Gooseberry Cove. They were accompanied on their trip by Miss Barbara Seward of Gooseberry Cove who spent 2 months vacation with Mr. and Mrs. Pike.
Mr. and Mrs. Seymour Brown and family from Fortune spent the Labour Day weekend with Mrs. Brown’s mother Mrs. Dorah Cooze.
Mr. James Ryan of Southern Bay age 90 years visited his sister Mrs. Johanna Seward who is 85 years old.
Mr. George Langon have returned home from Pouch Cove where he has been employed.
Mr. Patrick Seward went to St. John’s Aug. 29th. for a medical check up.
The District Branch meeting of the A. W. A. was held at Hillview on Aug. 28th. 15 members from the primary branch of Great Hearts Ease attended. At the close of the meeting a delicious supper was served by the Ladies of Hillview, | North West Brook and Hatchet Cove combined. The service was held at North West Brook which was conducted by the Spiritual Director Rev. Boutcher. The sermon was delivered by Rev. White of Whitbourne. Organist was Mrs. White.
As the fishing season draws to a close for another year, this has been the worst season experienced by the fishermen of Gooseberry Cove for a number of years. Not one squid has made its appearence in Goeseberry Cove waters this year.
Birthday greetings to William and Gerald Seward, twin brothers, of Gooseberry who celebrated their 21st. birthday on Sept 1st.
Mr. Edwin Seward has secured employment at Long Hr. Mr. Se- ward also celebrated his birthday on Sept 11th. The Langon family, Gooseberry Cove extends Deepest Sympathy to Mrs. Annie Lynch, St. John’s on the tragic death of her daughter Doris Enis of Verginia US.A. Lemeul Seward celebrated his birthday on Sept. 12th.
