Hillview – Random
Mr. and Mrs. Silvanus Marsh received the sad news of the tragic death on July 25th of their daughter Clara, Mrs. Robert Carey of Baie Verte who lost her life in a head on truck and car collision near the intersection of the Springdale highway. Mr. and Mrs. Carey were returning home after attending a fire convention at Gander when the accident occurred. She was 33 years of age and leaves to mourn beside her husband and seven children, her parents, three brothers, John, Les Jo and Rendell Marsh and two sisters Lily Mrs. Fred Parsons and Eileen Marsh all of Hillview. Members of the family attended the funeral which took place at Baie Verte. Sincere sympathy is extended to the families in their sad bereavement.
A party was held at the home of Mrs. Jean Hillier on Saturday August 24th. on the occasion of her birthday. The party was a complete surprise to Mrs. Hillier, as she had been visiting friends, and on returning home found that a crowd of people had gathered her home and was ready to her as she entered. A very enjoyable evening was spent by all present. Cards were played and many beautiful and useful gifts were received. Your Correspondent joins with others in wishing her many more happy days. Her two sons Glen and Harry were successful in passing their public examinations.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Price visited Mr. Price’s sister-in-law Mrs. Naomi Price and his niece Mrs. Francis Stoyles. They left for their home in Clements-Ville, Annapolis Valley. Their niece Miss Selina Martin of St. John’s accompanied them on the trip. Roy Stoyles left recently for Churchill Falls where he has found employment. Eugene Loder is also working in Churchill Falls.
Mr. Fred Hillier celebrated his birthday on August 30.
FAREWELL PARTY
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hillier and Mr. and Mrs. Francis Stoyles attended a farewell party at North West Brook on August 29th. The party was for Mrs. Jean Klaus and her son Bill before leaving for the United States. They had been visiting- Mrs. Klaus’ parents Mr. and Mrs. John Vivian.
Mrs. Violet Strickland and two children Paul and Dawn of Mount Pearl are visiting her parents. Her husband is employed at Churchill Falls. She will stay all the winter.
Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Freddie Drover and Mr. and Mrs. Levi Churchill of Hodge’s Cove who celebrated their second Wedding Anniversary on August 27th. The double wedding took place in Toronto on August 27th 1966.
A birthday party was given Mrs. William H. Stoyles in the Schoolroom Hillview. A group of ladies gathered the Schoolroom. A very enjoyable evening was spent and she was presented in gifts of cash besides other gifts. We wish you more happy birthdays Mrs. Stoyles.
Friends of Mrs. William Smith and Mrs. Francis Norris of North West Brook are glad to know that they have both returned home and are feeling fine after undergoing surgery at The General Hospital St. John’s.
Visiting Mr. and Mrs. William Smith was her daughter-in-law and family from Toronto. They spent a month.
Mrs. Victor Burton and Patsy and Elaine Baker motored from Toronto to visit Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Baker.
Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Baker motored from Deer Lake. They were also guests of Mr. and Mrs. William Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Baker. They were accompanied by their family. Mr. Samuel Baker is employed at Churchill Falls with Checo Engineering Company.
Harvey Brown and Cyril Norris are also employed there.
Mrs. Wilson Branton celebrated her birthday on August 23rd.
Garry Baker arrived home after being employed for some time with Western Construction Company at Port aux Basques.
Daphne Brown spent a week visiting her brother Clarence at Winterton. Mrs. Samuel Brown and son Abram and daughter, Marjorie, Dianne and Verlie also visited Mrs. Brown’s son Clarence.
Mr. Llewellyn Balsom, Chapel Arm is visiting Mr. and Mrs. Don Balsom North West Brook.
Jeffrey Snelgrove will be one yr. old on Sept. 12th. His uncle Billie Curlew celebrated his the same day.
A Stork Shower was held for Mrs. Elazor Avery recently. A large gathering of ladies attended and many beautiful gifts were received. A very enjoyable evening was spent. Cards were read by Mrs. Yvonne Butt.
Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Bursey have moved to Creston. Mr. Bur- sey is employed with Curren and Briggs at Marystown. His son Wayne was successful in passing grade ten. He will attend School at Salt Pond where he will study grade eleven.
Mrs. Alex Brace is a patient at the General Hospital following surgery.
Mr. Claude Butt has arrived home from Churchill Falls. He is now employed at Trinity, Trinity Bay.
Mrs. Patsy Snelgrove celebrated her birthday on August 14th. and her daughter on August 20.
Miss Vicky Norris has returned home after spending some time visiting her sister in Bango, Maine, US.A.
Mr. Francis Norris spent a week in St. John’s while his wife was a patient in hospital.
Visiting Mrs. Ruby Baker were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Granter and daughter Deer Lake.
Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Luscombe and family Stephenville, Mr. and Mrs. George Chapel Stephenville. Calvin Baker is home on his holidays. He is working with the federal government, St. John’s. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Baker. Verna and Valerie Baker (twin sisters) spent a vacation with their aunt at Deer Lake. Andy Baker had a birthday on Sept. 4th. Bernice Baker the 11th, Mrs. Raymond Reid North Harbour Sept 13th and Wallace Baker the 16th. Wallace and his Mother Mrs. Ruby Baker motored to Deer Lake where they visited relatives. They were accompanied on the trip by her daughter Bernice and Faye Vivian.
WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
Mr. and Mrs. Don Balsom North West Brook celebrated their 26th Wedding Anniversary recently. Greetings come from her daughter Patsy Snelgrove and son ‘Bill Curlew Clarenville. Your Correspondent wish them many more happy anniversaries.
Mrs. Willie Chipp from LaScie, White Bay and son Darrell, visited her parents Mr. and Mrs. William H. Stoyles Hillivew. She was also accompanied by Willie’s cousin Maxine.
Mr. Clarence Peddle St. John’s is back to work after spending some time on D.V.A. Ward General Hospital. He served in the navy in the Second World War, and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Archer Peddle Hodge’s Cove.
Mrs. Cecil Peddle and two children also of Hodge’s Cove spent 2 weeks with her sister Mrs. Lorne Kirby. Mr. Kirby is Principal of The Anglican School Harbour Grace.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Smith and two children Bonnie and Michael spent a few days with Mr. Smith’s sister Mrs. Annie Drover Halifax.
Little Randy Drover is home after spending some time with his brother Harvey and family at Toronto.

A group of friends gathered at the home of Mr. Alex Peddle Sr. and tendered him a surprise party in honor of his birthday. Cards were played, besides other attractions. Mrs. Olivia Drover and Mrs. Doris Balsom were the lucky ones to win the prizes. He received many useful gifts.
Friends of Mrs. Alex Peddle Sr. and Mrs. Douglas Strong of Clarenville are glad to know that they are home and feeling fine after undergoing minor surgery at the Walwyn Hospital. The Peddles are from Hodge’s Cove.

Mr. Joseph G. Smith Gooseberry Cove also had a birthday in August.
Wesley United Church Caplin Cove was the scene of a very pretty wedding on July 26th when Sophie May of Pool’s Cove was united in marriage to Lloyd Spurrell son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Spurrell of Hodge’s Cove. The bride looked lovely dressed in floor length gown of white satin with veil and head-piece to match as she entered the Church carrying a bouquet of red roses, and leaning on the arm of Nathaniel Whalen, who also gave her in marriage. Mrs. Rose Whalen sister of the bride from Caplin Cove was Maid of Honor, while Mrs. Elsie Strong the groom’s sister from Clarenville and Mrs. Gertie Smith a friend from Goose berry Cove were bridesmaids. They were dressed in Aqua. Supporting the groom was his brother Bill, while another brother Sandy, and Douglas Strong brother-in-law were bridesboys. The groom’s little brother Lester was ring bearer, and Bonnie Smith daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Smith, Hodge’s Cove was flower girl-train-bearer. She wore a pale blue dress, with white head piece white shoes and gloves and carried a beautiful bouquet. The groom’s mother wore a two-piece lace suit of pink rose, with hat and corsage-to match. Mrs. June Whalen was organist, she wore light blue. While the register was being signed, Miss Eleanor Baker sang “Oh perfect love” following the double ring ceremony which was performed by Reverend Bailey, a reception was held in St. Mary’s Hall Hodge’s Cove for over one hundred guests. The toast to the bride was proposed by Rev Bailey. Andrew Peddle was Master of Ceremonies. A dance follow ed which was kept up till morning. Best Wishes go to the happy couple for many years of wedded happiness.
TAKEN ILL
Tom Baker was stricken suddenly ill while spending his furlough with his family. He received treatment in Walwyn Cottage Hospital before leaving for Halifax where he is serving in the Navy. On his arrival to Halifax he had to be conveyed by ambulance from the Airport where he underwent immediate surgery for appendicitis.
He has joined his ship H.M.S. Gatineau, but it will be some time before he is well enough to perform his duty. He is the son of Alex and the late Annie Baker.
Members of the AWA of Random Mission met in the Orange Hall Hillview on August 28 for their District Annual Meeting. Members of all branches attended. Also Reverend Boutcher of Hodge’s Cove. After the meeting came to a close supper was served.
The Church Service was held in the Anglican Church North West Brook at 7:30 p.m. Special guests were Reverend and Mrs. White from Whitbourne Mission. The Sermon was delivered by Reverend White.
Visiting Mrs. Maggie Marsh for the holidays were her son George and family and Mr. John Hearn of St. John’s.

Mrs. Maud Gilbert celebrated her birthday recently. Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert will leave shortly for Toronto where they will attend the wedding of their daughter Mildred.
The Youth Centre which was organized here in March is progressing favourably. Some young people from outside Hillview have joined. The members held a Social in the Orange Hall on August 30th. Cards were played also bingo. Prizes for the Card Game were won by Mrs. Woodrow Churchill, Cris Stoyles, and Reg Stoyles. Jeanette Frost won Bingo. A satisfactory sum of money was realized, which will be put towards the Youth Centre.
Mr. Avalon Marsh has been transferred to the C.N.R. Boat Bonavista. He spent seventeen yrs working with the railway, but this is his first time being on a Coastal boat.
Mrs. Absalom Marsh has had the cast removed from her foot, but is still wearing bandage. Mrs. Marsh injured her foot six weeks ago and has been wearing a cast until recently.
Mondella Marsh was ten years old on Sept. 8. Her brother Stuart will celebrate his on Sept. 17.
Mrs. Jeannette Stacey is home and feeling fine after being a patient in the Walwyn Hospital.
Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Moses Price was their daughter and her husband Mr. and Mrs. Bill Rundell of Halifax and two children. They were accompanied by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Russell. One of the children a 3-yr. old boy became ill and had to be treated at Walwyn Hospital. They visited friends in Gander and Windsor before returning to their home. Mrs. Moses Price visited Mrs. Rebecca Smith at Gander.
Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Stoyles are home after spending some months with his sister in Gander.
Visiting Mrs. Leah Stanford are her daughter Marion and husband also her daughter Dorothy and son Bobby. They are from the USA. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Stanford and Mr. John Stamford, and Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Dyke also visited Mr. and Mrs. Stanford.
Mr. and Mrs. Willie Avery visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Abram Avery. They also spent a holiday with his brother Pleamon at Catalina.
A farewell party was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Moses Price on August 30th for her daughter and husband before leaving for their home in Halifax. A group of people gathered and lunch was served. Games were played and everyone enjoyed themselves.
Rosella Price celebrated her birthday on August 27th.
STORK SHOWER
A Stork Shower was held for Mrs. Lloyd Peddle at her home in Hodge’s Cove. Twenty women attended. Some lovely gifts were received which were opened by Mrs. Virtue Peddle who also read the Cards. Cards were played and the prize was won by Mrs. Susie Peddle, the oldest member present. A very pleasant evening was spent by all present.
Miss Elaine Peddle celebrated her birthday on September 19th. She is teaching in Hodge’s Cove. She has completed two years in university. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Peddle Hodge’s Cove. Her two uncles, Herbert Spurrell and Joseph Spurrell celebrates their birthdays the same day. Congratulations.
Andrew Peddle is teaching at Gooseberry Cove.
Friends of Mr. William J. Peddle gave him a surprise party at his ‘home on the occasion of his birthday. He was presented with some useful and costly gifts. Cards were played and Mrs. Alex Peddle Sr. won the prize. Lunch was served. Everyone enjoyed themselves. Attending the party was his nephew Corporal Sandy Spurrell. The party was kept up till the early hours of morning.
Miss Rosalind Drodge of Little Hearts Ease will enter university for her fourth year. Her sisters Judy and Lavinia were successful in passing their courses at Vocational Trade School in Clarenville. Judy is employed in the Bank of Nova Scotia, Clarenville. Lavinia is working in the office at Walwyn Hospital. Another sister Thelma was successful in passing grade 9. They are the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Eldred Drodge, Little Hearts Ease.
Mrs. Ben Smith Hillview received the sad news of the death by accidental shooting in Maryland, US.A. of her cousin Doris Enos. She was the former Doris Lynch of St. John’s and the youngest child of the late Gilbert and Annie Lynch. Her Mother lives at Paradise, Conception Bay, but since the tragic death occured, she is staying with her son Albert on Forest Road St. John’s. Reports from Butter Cove tells us that the fishermen there have stowed away their fishing gear and some of the men have found employment elsewhere.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert Stoyles have left for Labrador City where he has been employed for over 5 years.
Mrs. Willie Chipp and little boy Darrell and Maxine have left for their home in LaScie after spending their holidays with their parents in Hillview.
Mr. Chesley Goobie and Mr. Rex Goobie are building a house for Wilbert Stoyles. There are several other new homes under construction.
David Brown Gander who was injured in a car accident in May went back to work on August 26.
David Brown, Velma Smith, Mrs. Janet Brown and daughter were visitors to Hillview also visiting were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Churchill Windsor.
Mr. and Mrs. Watson Dyke and family from Gander visited Mrs. Dyke’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Benson.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Vokey left Hillview on Aug. 2nd. for their home in Toronto. Mrs. Vokey’s Aunt, Mrs. Charles Eddy accompanied them on the trip. She will be staying for a month before returning home. Leroy Eddy has re turned home from Churchill Falls where he has been employed for some months.
Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Frost have returned home from Grand Falls after spending a few weeks holidays with their daughter and other relatives and friends.
Mr. Eliol Baker and his sister Mrs. Leanie Smith have left for Windsor. She will spend some time with her nephew Gower Baker before returning to her in the US.A.
Visiting Mrs. Raymond Frost were her Mother Mrs. Florence Goobie St. John’s, also her brothers, Glen and Scott Goobie. Also visiting Mrs. Frost were Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Penney and son Chris.

Mr. William H. Stoyles received the sad news of the death of his nephew Paul Turner of Glace Bay N.S. who died following a motor accident. He was 19 years of age. His brother Lloyd was also injured in the same accident, but has been released from hospital and is improving. The boy’s Mother was the former Annie Stoyles, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William James Stoyles.
Celebrating birthdays are Velma Smith her 19th on Aug. 3. Sheila Churchill her 19th on Aug. 16th. Valmore Stoyles, Patsy Eddy Aug. 8. She was 11 years old. Clifford Avery Aug. 16th. eleven years.
Mr. and Mrs. Garfield Stuckless and 6 children visited Mrs. Stuckless’ mother, Mrs. Louise Avery, also her brother Donald Avery and friends. They were from Bishop’s Falls.
Mrs. Minnie Peddle of St. John’s speat a few weeks at Hodge’s Cove also her son Douglas and his wife and child. Mrs. Peddle is the widow of the late Harvey Peddle of Hodge’s Cove.
Gooseberry Cove
Congratulations to Miss Florence Spurrell of Butter Cove on passing Grade XI Exams. She also passed in summer school. Florence is now teaching at Rencontre East.
Fredrick Dale Smith, 3 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Smith, Gooseberry Cove escaped serious injury on Sunday Sept. 1st. when he pluged in a washer and put his hand in the wringer which took his arm through the wringer to his shoulder. He was taken to the Wal- wyn Hospital where X-Rays showed no broken bones only bruises.
Paul Smith 9 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Uriah Smith Gooseberry Cove fell down Friday, Aug. 30th., and broke his arm, He now has it in a cast.
Mrs. Annie Benson of Little Hearts Ease entered the General Hospital St. John’s, Sept. 2nd., for treatment.
Mr. Abraham Spurrell of Butter Cove entered the Sanatorium on Aug. 30th. His many friends of Butter Cove, Gooseberry Cove and Southport wish him a speedy recovery.
Mr. and Mrs. Felix Pike and daughter Kathy of Halifax, Nova Scotia are visiting Mrs. Pikes’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Seward, Gooseberry Cove. They were accompanied on their trip by Miss Barbara Seward of Gooseberry Cove who spent 2 months vacation with Mr. and Mrs. Pike.
Mr. and Mrs. Seymour Brown and family from Fortune spent the Labour Day weekend with Mrs. Brown’s mother Mrs. Dorah Cooze.
Mr. James Ryan of Southern Bay age 90 years visited his sister Mrs. Johanna Seward who is 85 years old.
Mr. George Langon have returned home from Pouch Cove where he has been employed.
Mr. Patrick Seward went to St. John’s Aug. 29th. for a medical check up.
The District Branch meeting of the A. W. A. was held at Hillview on Aug. 28th. 15 members from the primary branch of Great Hearts Ease attended. At the close of the meeting a delicious supper was served by the Ladies of Hillview, | North West Brook and Hatchet Cove combined. The service was held at North West Brook which was conducted by the Spiritual Director Rev. Boutcher. The sermon was delivered by Rev. White of Whitbourne. Organist was Mrs. White.
As the fishing season draws to a close for another year, this has been the worst season experienced by the fishermen of Gooseberry Cove for a number of years. Not one squid has made its appearence in Goeseberry Cove waters this year.
Birthday greetings to William and Gerald Seward, twin brothers, of Gooseberry who celebrated their 21st. birthday on Sept 1st.
Mr. Edwin Seward has secured employment at Long Hr. Mr. Se- ward also celebrated his birthday on Sept 11th. The Langon family, Gooseberry Cove extends Deepest Sympathy to Mrs. Annie Lynch, St. John’s on the tragic death of her daughter Doris Enis of Verginia US.A. School has reopened and Mr. Mayard Goodland from Elliston is principal and Miss Bernetta Wiseman from Lushes Bight and Mrs. Vera Lambert Hillview, the teachers in the two lower rooms.
Visitors here were Mrs. Florence Goobie, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Penney and sons Chris, Glen, and Scott Goobie all of St. John’s they visited Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Frost.
Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Stoyles were Mr. and Mrs. Bob Hillyard, Gander. Mrs. Hillyard, was the former Herah Smith of Dildo.

Mrs. Charles Eddy and daughter Patsy have arrived home after spending a months vacation on the mainland visiting her daughters Shirley and Betty in Brant ford and her sister in Toronto. They also visited London and Niagara Falls. They enjoyed the trip. Her daughter and son-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Busch accompanied them home. Patsy celebrated her 11th birthday in Brantford and a party was held at her sister’s home and was attended by a large crowd. She received some lovely gifts.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Vokey, of Toronto and Mr. and Mrs. Garland Oram from Coner Brook, visited Mr. and Mrs. Charles Eddy.
Walter Critch had a birthday on September 28th.
Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Stoyles left for Gander where they will spend the winter with Mr. Stoyles sister Mrs. Rebecca Smith.
Little Raymond Price spent the summer with his grandparents in Harbour Mill, but returned heme to start school for his first time.
A party was held for Lee Frost on Saturday September 7th in honor of his fourth birthday. 16 children gathered at his home in the afternoon. Games were played and the usual fun among the youngsters was enjoyed. He received some lovely gifts. All the children had a very pleasant afternoon. The correspondent wish him many more happy birthdays.
Mr. Francis Stoyles has left for Wabush Lake where he is employed at carpenter work with Newfoundland Forestry.
Mrs. Naomi Price spent a week visiting friends at Gander.
A group of women gathered at the home of Mrs. Maggie Marsh on September third and rendered her a birthday party. Lunch was served. Games were played and a very enjoyable evening was spent by all present. Most of the gifts she received was in cash, besides other presents. Those who could not attend sent her along gifts in cash the following day.
Among those who attended were her brother and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. George Loder and their 3 children from Come-By Chance. While Mr. and Mrs. Rundell were here from Halifax they spent some time in Grand Falls where they visited the paper mill. They were accompanied on the trip by their son Bill and his wife Loretta, also Mr. and Mrs. Moses Price of Hillview.
Five year old Randy Spurrell, of Butter Cove, was rescued from the Harbour waters by eight year old brother Jeffrey. The two children were playing on the wharf. And there was no one else around when the child fell over. If it had not been for the prompt action of his brother who used all his young strength to save him he would have undoubtably lost his life. They are the children of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Spurrell.
The Spurrell’s have nine children attending school.
A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Spurrell, Toronto August 17th. He is also the son of Mr. and Mrs. Spurrrell, his wife is the former Marjorie Crann of Fair Haven.
Sylvia Critch was twelve years old on September 15th. She is the Packet carrier for Hillview.
Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Allen Tucker, St. Jones, was his son, Silas and family from Ottawa. Also his daughter and her husband Mr. and Mrs. Hogan and their son. Mrs. Tucker’s son Gerald, who is serving in the Air Force in Chatam, New Brunswick and Mr. and Mrs. Nechura from California and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Price, Port Blandford also visited Mr. and Mrs. Tucker.
Mr. Nechura will leave soon for Viet Nam. Mrs. Hogan celebrated her birthday while spending her vacation at St. John’s.
Miss Rebecca Squires celebrated her birthday on September 14th, and Mr. Roy Price Port Blandford on August 6th.
A house warming party was given Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert King at St. Jones. A group of people gathered at their home. Games were played and they received the gifts in cash.
A very enjoyable evening was spent and everyone enjoyed themselves.

Mr. Eloil Baker of Hillview was stricken suddenly ill and had to be rushed to Walwyn Cottage hospital. His many friends wish him a speedy recovery. He was 77 years of age on Sept. 11th.

Wayne Carey, Baie Verte was fifteen years old on August 30th. His mother lost her life in a car accident on July 25. Greetings are from his grandparents in Hillview.

Miss Jane Avery of Ivany’s Cove who was struck by a car over two years ago has not yet fully recovered. She visited St. John’s recently for a checkup.

A very pretty wedding took place in the United Church Hatchel Cove on Tuesday September 10th when Alice youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nathanial Smith became the bride of James Avery, son of Mr. and Mrs. Silas Avery of Southport. The bride looked lovely dressed in a floor length gown of blue with white and carrying a white bible, with floral streamers as she entered the church leaning on the arm of her father who gave her in marriage. Maid of honor was the bride’s sister Myra and bridesmaid was the groom’s sister Marguerite (Mrs. Edwin Seaward) both wore yellow. Supporting the groom was his cousin Lloyd Avery of Clarenville, while Roy Smith the bride’s brother was the bridesboy.
The bride’s mother was dressed in light blue and the groom’s mother wore yellow both wore corsages to match. Organist was Mrs. Eliab Smith, sister-in-law of the bride, Hodges Cove who wone light green. She played O Perfect Love and Blest be the tie that binds.
The double ring ceremony was performed by Rev. Clarke of Hill- view charge. Following the ceremony, a reception for over one hundred guests was held at the home of the bride. Toast to the bride was proposed by Reverend Clarke and was responded to by Lloyd Avery. The couple received many useful and costly gifts besides a substantial sum of money. Friends from Grand Falls and relatives and friends from Gander attended. Best wishes and many years of happiness are extended to the happy couple.
Mrs. Madge Churchill visited relatives and friends in Glovertown. She also attended a wedding there. Aunt Maggie as she is familarily known to everyone, has been in ill health for some time and she has recently been dischanged from Walwyn hospital. We are all glad to see her feeling better and able to get around again.

Mr. Winston Hiscock has found employment in Churchill Falls. He joined the army at the beginning of the second world war. He married and settled in Scotland where he stayed until two years ago, he and his wife came Bight Bight to live. They have one daughter married in Scotland.
Miss Margaret Hiscock, celebrated her birthday on Sept. 21 and Melvie Short had a birthday on Sept. 17th. These young ladies are from Deep Bight and the greetings come from Mrs. Charles Hiscock, also of Deep Bight.
Clyde Hiscock has been absent from school for one week suffering from tonsilitus. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hiscock Deep Bight.
Mrs. Archer Peddle, Hedge’s Cove is home from hospital and feeling fine, after receiving treatment.
Mrs. Jacob Smith has been transferred to the Grace General hospital where she will undergo surgry.

Mr. Don Dawe Toronto celebrated his birthday on September 13th and his son Wayne on Sept. 15. Greetings come from his mother-in-law Mrs. Emma Spurrell, Butter Cove.
Mr. Robert Peddle, Hodges Cove held a farewell service, in St. Alban’s Anglican Church, Great Hearts Ease on Sunday September 8th. He has been layman in Random mission for the past two or three years. He has taught school at Hodge’s Cove for two years. He will leave shortly for Toronto where he has been accepted for the Church Army. A special collection was taken up during the service and over $19 was presented to him.
Mrs. Martha Strowbridge of St. John’s and Mrs. Edgar Spurrell of Butter Cove extend birthday greetings to their sister Mrs. Miriam Martin of Clarenville. Mrs. Martin is the widow of the late William Martin of Little Heart’s Ease. Since the death of her husband she has been living with her children at Clarenville. Your correspondent joins in wishing her many more birthdays.
Mrs. Arthur Spurrell of Butter Cove attended the nursing graduation of her niece Alena Coady, daughter of Staff Sergeant Hugh and Mrs. Coady of St. John’s. The graduation took place on the 12th of September in Holy Heart of Mary Auditorium, St. John’s. Mrs. Coady is the former Blanche Smith of Gooseberry Cove.
Willis and Edgar John Smith of Gooseberry Cove who spent most of the summer months fishing out of Happy Adventure B.B. in their long liner “Freddie Marlene” is now turbot catching at Salvage, They report that the turbot fishery none too good.
Bax and Jim Smith of Hillview were both successful in passing their courses in university the past summer, both with high marks. Bax has completed his 2nd year and was successful on the subject he wrote on his third year. Jim studied two subjects on his third year, Bax has been teaching in Blaketown for three years and is attending University Tuesday and Thursday nights of each week. Jim is back to Eastport, for his sixth year and will take private study from a college on the mainland. Every success is wished to them as there is much hard work attached.
Mr. Ross Stoyles has arrived from Churchill Falls. He will return in a few weeks time.
Mrs. Laura Miller is visiting her sister Mrs. Naomi Price of Hillview. Mrs. Miller is the widow of George Miller of St. Jones and since his death she resides in St. John’s.
Your reporter was speaking on the phone some time ago with, Mrs. Willam Way of Bonavista. She says that she eagerly awaits the boy who sells the Clarenville Packet as she enjoys reading the news “Hillview – Random”. She has relatives in Hillview and she was the former Florrie Drover of Hodge’s Cove.
The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Vey Hillview was christened in the United Church on Sunday Sept. 15th and was given the name Marilyn Gale. The service was conducted by the minister Reverend Clarke.
Miss Sandra Frost spent the weekend visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Frost. She is a second year student nurse at the General Hospital.
Mrs. Alex Brace North West Brook is home from the General Hospital after undergoing surgery.
Mrs. Ruben Bursey also of North West Brook underwent surgery at Gander Memorial Hospital she is home and feeling fine.
Mr. and Mrs. John Norris visited their children in Grand Falls and Bishop’s Falls. Their son-in- law passed away recently at Bishop’s Falls.
Mr. and Mrs. Eldred Butt visited Mrs. Butt’s mother at English Harbour.
Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Crocker, Swift Current and Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Janes, St. John’s visited Mr. and Mrs. Francis Norris. The Janes’ motored to the United States from St. John’s and dropped off to see Mr. and Mrs. Norris.
Pastor Callahan of the Pentecostal Church held his farewell service at North West Brook on Sunday Sept. 15. He will leave for Africa shortly.

Mr. Avalon Marsh, Hillview, is home on his holidays. He works on the coastal boat Bonavista and the run is from St. John’s to Nain, Labrador.

Mr. Cecil Bishop sighted a school of tuna off Hatchet Cove recently, this is the first time that tuna have been known to be seen in the waters of Random.
George Lambert has left for Twin Falls where he has found empolyment.

Mrs. Evelyn Bishop will celebrate her birthday on Sept. 30th. Her little girl on September 25th. Mr. John Bishep Sept. 28h and Mr. Malcolm Lambert was sixty on September 12th. Greetings to all of them from the correspondent.
Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Bishop visited her parents in Bishop’s Cove Conception Bay.
Mr. Malcolm Lambert received a surprise on September 12 when 38 people gathered at his home and tendered him a party on his 60th birthday. Lunch and refreshments were served. He received some lovely gifts and every one enjoyed themselves tremendously. The party was kept up until the early hours of morning.

Miss Pearl Smith, Hodge’s Cove celebrated her birthday on Sept. 7th. She has been teaching at Butter Cova for a number of years. Her sister Alice Belle celebrated hers on Sept. 22nd. May they enjoy many more.
A salmon weighing fifteen lbs. was caught in July of this year by Mr. Harrison Spurrell of Butter Cove, The salmon was tagged at St. Andrews, North West Miramichi Curventon, New Brunswick, on June second 1966. The length when tagged was “Smolt”. Mr. Spurrell returned the tag to fisheries resources Board of Canada at the place above mentioned for which he received a letter of appreciation. Enclosed in the letter was a gift in cash. He was also thanked for his interest in sending back the tag. Mr. Spurrell also received a map showing him where the salmon was tagged.
Winnie Smith went to Toronto on Aug. 25th where she has secured employment.
Junior Seward has gone to Toronto to look for work.
Miss Rose Dean of Southport arrived home from Toronto where she was employed. Miss Dean is now atthe Grace Hospital training to be a Nurse.

Raymond Langor 12 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Langor Gooseberry Cove, also Clarenville Packet carrier, suffered a painful accident on Saturday, Sept. 7th when he nipped his foot between the boat and the break- water. He suffered a broken toe. He returned home from Walwyn Hospital Sept. 14th. He now has a cast on for 3 weeks.

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell Whalen who celebrates their first wedding anniversary on Sept. 22. Maxwell also celebrated his birthday on Sept. 13. He is employed at Churchill Falls.
A house warming party was held at the heme of Mr. and Mrs. Obediah Spurrell on Sept. 17. 32 ladies attended the party. Mrs. Spurrell received $45.00 in cash also many beautiful gifts. Lunch was served by Mrs. Roland Smith and Mrs. Titus Spurrell. Mr. and Mrs. Spurrell have just recently moved into their new home. Attending the party was Mrs. Brigadier Russell who offered up a prayer of blessing on the new home and the residing family. A word of thanks was returned by Mrs. Spurrell who then thanked the ladies for their gifts. A very enjoyable evening was spent.
Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Eli Drodge who celebrated their 49 wedding anniversary on Sept. 19. They were married at Brigus Conception Bay in 1919 by the Rev. Oliver Jackson. Greetings from their many friends.
