Clarenville man gets life sentence for wife’s murder

ST JOHN’S (CP) Edward Maxwell Seaward, 64, of Clarenville was sentenced to imprisonment for life Friday after he was found guilty of murder in the death of his wife, Laura Maud.

He was charged with murder punishable by imprisonment for life after RCMP discovered Mrs. Seaward, 63, in a beaten and dazed condition Nov. 20, 1973 in the couple’s summer cabin near Goobies, about 15 miles east of Clarenville.

Mrs. Seaward died later the same day in a nearby hospital and medical evidence given at the trial attributed her death to injuries from a beating.

The 11-man jury deliberated for two hours and 35 minutes before bringing in a verdict of guilty. The 12th member of the jury had become ill and had been excused by Chief Justice R.S. Furlong.

The jury recommended that Mr. Seaward be eligible for parole after serving 10 years of the sentence.
