Alexander (Sandy) Spurrell

Alexander (Sandy) Spurrell was born at Butter Cove on May 10, 1900 to Moses Spurrell and Mary Ann Stanley. He had 5 siblings – brothers Edward, Richard James (died during the WW1) and Edgar; sisters Isabella and Jessie Ann.

Sandy married Olive Dawe of Seldom, Fogo Island. They had four children – Clayton, Beulah, Juanita, and Audrey.

Sandy’s started his career as a lay minister in 1930 at Gooseberry Cove and conducted services for the next 40 years. He moved to Sunnyside to live with Weldon Smith. He took Weldon as a 13-year-old and helped raise him. Sandy’s final service was held on December 28, 1970 at Sunnyside. He passed away on January 20, 1974 and is buried at Sunnyside.
