Other noteworthy information:   Few except those who have actually encountered a similar experience can appreciate how profound the following situation must have been. But it is a fact that on one particular day, Gilbert Stringer lived through twice what most people would find traumatic just once. The ship that he was on was torpedoed and he was forced to leave it soon to be rescued by another. Within an hour, the same thing happened … a shell hit this second ship and again he was forced to climb over the side. Fortunately, the second rescue ship got them safely back into port.
