Local students vie for trip to Ottawa

Reprinted from The Packet, June 16, 2015

Both Haley Peddle from Hodge’s Cove and Katie Kelly of Long Beach will be counting on your online votes for a chance to win a trip to Ottawa for the History Youth Forum through Historic Sites Association of Newfoundland and Labrador’s 2015 Young Citizens contest.

Haley and Katie are two of 11 different Young Citizens who have been selected from around the province at regional Heritage Fairs. They have created videos presenting their projects and now, the public must vote for the best, comprising 50 percent of their final score. A panel of judges will account for the other half, selecting two winners for the trip.

For example, Haley’s video is on “A Reflection of the Rural Postal System in NL” and Katie’s is on “The Resilient Newfoundlander and Labradorian.”

Young Citizens is an initiative of Canada’s History focusing on Canadian Citizenship, with students being chosen to participate from Heritage Fairs across the country.

You can find the NL student videos online at www.historicsites.ca and everyone is encouraged to vote and comment on their favorites before voting closes on July 5.
