Over 50 women, representing 11 of the 17 U.C.W. groups in the Swift Current to Deep Bight Area of the Avalon Presbyterial United Church Women, attended the fall Rally held at Queen’s Cove on Thursday, October 23rd. Also attending were Mrs. Naboth Winsor of Carbonear, President of the Presbyterial; Mrs. Laura Wilkinson of Old Perlican, a Presbyterial Vice-President and part-time worker with the Newfoundland Conference; Mrs. W. Louis, Immediate Past-President of the Presbyterial and chairman of the Leadership Development Committee; Miss Madge Bursey, Literature Sect and Miss L. Whitemarsh all of St. John’s, as well as Mrs. Cyril Drodge of Adeytown, Vice President for the area. The theme of the Rally was ‘Responsible Stewardship’.
The afternoon session began with a Worship Service conducted by the Queen’s Cove U.C.W. following which the President of the Group, Mrs. Chesley Goobie, extended a welcome to all present. A skit on Stewardship was presented by members of the Little Heart’s Ease and Hodge’s Cove Groups. In a discussion entitled, ‘What’s New in United Church Women’, Mrs. Winsor and Mrs. Wilkinson outlined the changes made in the method of sending payments to the United Budget Fund and explained the procedure to be followed in the future while Mrs. Louis gave information on the completing of Report Forms. They then conducted a very inspiring Bible Study and this was followed by a most interesting but thought-provoking discussion on Christian Citizenship during which members discussed different problems in our society today and how the women of the church could help in the various situations. There was a splendid Literature Display and members availed of the opportunity to purchase literature for their groups etc. At 6:00 p.m. a delicious supper was served by the Queen’s Cove U.C.W.
The Worship Service at the evening session was conducted by the U.C.W. of Hillview. A playlet giving an account of several phases of U.C.W. work carried on across Canada was then presented with members from several different locals taking part.
Sessions concluded at 9:00 p.m. thus bringing to close a very inspiring and helpful Rally.
