Page 5 – Mr. and Mrs. Eleazar Robbins of Hatchet Cove celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary on January 8th. They were married in the United Church, St. Jones Within by Rev. Peck. Mr. Robbins is 94 years old and Mrs. Robbins is 92. They both are enjoying fairly good health. (Ed. Note: We extend our congratulations to this fine old couple and we believe that 73 years married is an outstanding record. If anyone can beat this, we would certainly like to hear about it.)

  • Mr. and Mrs. James Vandenbrink of Woodbridge, Ontario wish to announce the engagement of their daughter, Susan Jacquline, to Heber Gordon King, son of Mr. and Mrs. Heber King of St. Jones Within, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland. Wedding date to be announced.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Titus Spurrell, Little Heart’s Ease are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter Marilyn to Maxwell Whalen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Whalen, Caplin Cove. Wedding date to be announced later.

Page 40 – Queen’s Cove

  • Congratulations to Mrs. John Goobie who was 71 years old on December 21st. She and her husband celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary on December 23rd.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Albert House celebrated their 20th anniversary on December 25th.
  • A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ern Avery at Walwyn Hospital on December 27th.
  • Arthur Goobie, William Cooper and Holstead House spent their Christmas Holidays with their families. They are employed at St. John’s.
  • Mrs. Eleazer Gosse is a patient at St. John’s, General Hospital. We wish her a speedy recovery.
  • Mrs. Arthur Goobie and two daughters visited her parents Mr. and Mrs. Fred Martin at St. John’s.
  • Mrs. John Goobie and grandson Max visited their friends at St. John’s.
  • Students attending Musgravetown High School who spent Christmas at home were Winston House, Richard Goobie, Effie Spurrell, Gerald Cooper and Lloyd Butt.
  • The teacher and pupils held their annual concert on December 23rd.
  • The UCW held their annual social on November 20th in the LOA Hall. Meat and salad was the menu and proceeds which were in aid of the church were very gratifying.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Harry Vey visited Mrs. Vey’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Goobie.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Vey visited daughter Mrs. Hedley Gosse.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Reginald Gregory and family visited Mr. Gregory’s parents Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Gregory.
  • Mrs. Florence Goobie visited her sister Mrs. Robert Smith and brothers Edward, Harvey and Wm. Gregory. She was accompanied by her son Scott.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Goobie and son Ricky visited Mr. Goobie’s parents Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Goobie.
  • Other visitors to Queen’s Cove during Christmas were Mr. and Mrs. Max Button, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Barbour, Mr. and Mrs. Len Richards, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Butler, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Reed and Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Penney.
  • Congratulations to Mrs. Wm. Gregory who celebrated her 70th birthday on January 1st.
  • New Year’s Greetings are extended to Albert Howse and Jim Goobie who are working at Churchill Falls.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Baxter Gosse are visiting their daughter Mrs. Art Tilley and son Mr. Adolph Gosse at Ontario. They will also visit their daughter Mrs. Russell Martin at Wabush.
  • St. Aiden’s Guild held their annual social on December 9th.
  • The LOA held their annual parade on December 26th followed by meat and salad teas.

 

Page 41 – Hatchet Cove

  • The wedding took place in the United Church at St. Jones Within on December 27th of Velma Hillyard, daughter of Mr. William Hillyard of St. Jones Within, and Nelson Lambert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Lambert of Hatchet Cove. The bride was attended by her sister Mrs. Benjamin Robbins as matron of honour, brides maids were Mrs. Alan Lambert, sister-in-law of the groom, and Mrs. John Duffett, sister of the groom. The groom was assisted by his brother Alan Lambert as best man, and Nelson Hillyard and Winston Hillyard, brothers of the bride. The bride was given in marriage by her father Mr. Wm. Hillyard and the ceremony was performed by Rev. A. Paddle. Reception was held in the U.C. School with over 200 guests attending the wedding.
  • Celebrating anniversaries Mr. and Mrs. Benoni Robbins their 42nd wedding anniversary on December 18th. Mr. and Mrs. David Tucker, 11th on December 20th. Mr. and Mrs. Alan Lambert, 1st on December 22nd. Mr. and Mrs. Nathanial Smith, 41st on December 29th. Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Lambert, their 36th on December 29th.
  • Visitors during the Christmas holidays were: Mrs. John Duffett and family spent a week with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Lambert. Mr. and Mrs. John Blundon and family of Gander, Mr. and Mrs. George Blundon and family and Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Blundon and family also of Gander. Eva, Myra and Alice Smith spent a couple of days with their parents Mr. and Mrs. Nathanial Smith.

 

Page 47 – North West Brook

  • The wedding took place at the Anglican Church on December 23rd of Lester Warren of North West Brook and Marion Snow R.N. of Spaniards Bay. The bride was assisted by Marie Cook as Matron of Honor and Jean Reid as bridesmaid. Roy Warren, brother of the groom, was best man and Cyril Reid was usher. The couple are now residing at Bonne Bay.
  • Home for the holidays were Annie Soper, Jeannetta Norris, Faye Vivian and Jack Vivian from Musgravetown; Doris Norris, Vicky Norris and Karen Norris, Calvin Baker from St. John’s, Matilda Norris from Windsor.
  • Everett Soper has returned to Labrador after spending Christmas with his parents.
  • Joyce Bursey and Nellie Bursey spent a few days at Bonavista visiting friends and relatives there.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Manuel Warren of Bonavista visited here.
  • Joan and Cyril Reid spent the holidays with their mother Mrs. J. Warren.
  • Mr. and Mrs. E.J. Soper visited her parents at Bishop’s Falls.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Eric Benson accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Art Haines and family of St. John’s recently visited Mr. and Mrs. Frank Norris.
  • Mrs. Hugh Robson and family of St. John’s visited her parents Mr. and Mrs. John Butt during Christmas.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Butt and Mr. and Mrs. John Butt visited Mrs. J. Butt’s daughter at Pool’s Island.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Batson of English Harbour are spending the winter with their daughter and son-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Eldred Butt.
  • John Norris is attending the Fishery College at St. John’s
  • Mr. and Mrs. Frank Whalen and family, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Baldwin and family, Miss I. Howlett and Belle Whalen visited Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Smith during Christmas.
  • Mr. Lenwall, who is a patient at the Sanatorium in St. John’s, spent Christmas with his family.
  • Annie Hodder of Marystown was the guest of Mrs. Claude Butt during Christmas.

 

Page 54 – Hillview

  • Mrs. Doreen Avery (Postmistress) made a long distance call to her mother in England during the Christmas holidays. The call was made in five minutes from the time she phoned long distance in Clarenville, until she spoke to her mother in England. The reception was excellent.
  • Miss M.L. Avery spent Christmas at Grates Cove. She also visited relatives and friends in St. John’s.
  • Visiting Miss Avery on New Year’s Day were the following: Mrs. K. Parsons, St. John’s; Nurse Callahan; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Adams, Sunnyside; Mrs. Anderson Adey, Adeyton; Mr. Edward Gregory and Mr. Edward Smith, Queen’s Cove; Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Adams and son, Sunnyside; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Frost and daughter, Clarenville; Mr. and Mrs. Bert Avery, Lewisporte; Mr. and Mrs. Hayward Drover, Come by Chance. Miss Avery wishes to thanks all for their kindness and gifts during Christmas.
  • Also visiting relatives were: Mr. and Mrs. Pleamon Avery, Catalina; Miss Diane Avery from Toronto; Miss Minnie Avery from St. John’s; Mr. Wm.T. Avery, St. John’s (formerly Hillview) arrived from Churchill Falls. He will be returning again soon.
  • Mr. Ben Smith will celebrate his 72nd birthday on February 12th. He is a World War I veteran, and a survivor of the Halifax Disaster of 1917. He enjoys good health and likes to be kept busy.
  • Friends were sorry to hear of the sudden passing recently at Hodge’s Cove of Mr. James Drover and Mrs. Marie Langdow, both aged 65 years. The funeral took place in St. Mary’s Anglican Church on Saturday, January 21st. Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved families.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Silvanus Marsh of Hillview celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary on December 24th. They were married by Rev. Donald Fraser in 1930. Greetings from their children and grandchildren.
  • Mrs. Silvanus Marsh, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Soper, Mr. and Mrs. Moses Price and their son Terry visited their mother at Grand Falls Hospital. They remained in Grand Falls for the weekend.
  • Eileen Marsh, nurse in training at the General Hospital, spent New Years with her parents. She has since returned to work and our best wishes go with her for success in the future.
