Page 9 – Local Resident has 1st World War Mementos

Mr. Philip Marsh of Clarenville, formerly of Deer Harbour, has had in his possession for the past nineteen years a couple of mementos of the war given to him by his aunt, Mrs. Job Marsh, before she passed away.

One is a spray of poppies from France, and the other is a letter she had received from Government House informing her that her nephew, Wm. Luther Marsh, was missing in action. This letter was dated 1916 and signed by Wm. Davidson, the Governor of that day.

Her nephew was only one of that great company of Newfoundland boys who didn’t return, and it is a well known fact that many of them are buried in Flanders Field in France.

Sometime after the war the “Haig Fund” was started over there and relatives of these boys were asked to send donations in their memory.

Mrs. Marsh was one of the contributors and they sent her a large spray of poppies and fern in a glass box approximately two feet long, and Mrs. Marsh has kept them in his possession ever since, as requested by his aunt.

Page 56 – In loving memory of Susette Loder, Hillview

All tender-hearted parents
Who love their children dear
Please hear about a little girl
Who has caused many a tear.

It was on the 6th of August
A lovely summer’s day
That little Susette Loder died
In such a tragic way.

A precious flower so young and fair
Crushed by fatal doom –
Is planted in God’s garden now
To flourish and to bloom.

While walking along the roadside
With her heart so young and gay,
It was in the sight of her playmates
She was quickly snatched away.

And when they saw what happened,
There was nothing they could do
For they were very helpless
And very frightened too.

To us it seems a mystery
Why those happenings have to be,
But God does all things for the best
It’s beyond our power to see.

Doctors did their very best
That little life to save
But as it slowly ebbed away
Their efforts were in vain.

The day of Susette’s funeral
Was a heart-felt sight to see
As she was gently laid to rest
At the early age of three.

And to see her anguished parents
Made many a heart feel sad
For the loss of their little daughter
The only girl they had.

She’s happy now in heaven above
Around God’s throne on high
Playing with the angels
Where all is peace and joy.

God will keep his promise
He will let her rest
In His arms forever
Leaning on His breat.

(Composed by Mrs. Ben Smith of Hillview at the request of Mrs. Wilfred Loder).

Not of Thanks – Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Loder of Hillview wish to sincerely thank all those who sent messages, cards and flowers; and who helped share the burden and sorrow caused by the tragic death of their little daughter Susette.

Page 58 – In memoriam

In loving memory of Arthur Jacobs who died November 25, 1959.

In sorrow I remember
Seven years ago today,
When the dearest friend I had on earth
Passed peacefully away.

In grief I watched him suffer
There was little I could do
And as his strength grew weaker,
Caused me to suffer too.

I prayed for his recovery
But my prayers were all in vain,
For God was pleased to give him ease,
And freed him of his pain.

Fond memories of our happy years,
Often cross my mind,
He had to be the first to go
And I was left behind.

He bore his suffering patiently,
It was His Master’s will,
But as the years roll swiftly by,
I seem to miss him still.

Life on earth is very frail
And mortal trust is vain
Still it is my firm belief
That we shall meet again.

Inserted by his wife – Mrs. Angela Jacobs, Little Heart’s Ease.
