Page 31 – St. Jones Within

  • A house warming party was held for Mrs. Gilbert King at her home with 19 women present. Cards and games were played. Gifts were opened by Mrs. Bert King.
  • Congratulations to George and Marice Hillyard on the recent birth of their son at the Walwyn Hospital.
  • Mr. Alphaeus King celebrated his 70th birthday on September 14th with a party at his home.
  • Miss Rebecca Squires was 68 years old on September 14th.
  • Other September birthdays are: Otto King, Frances King, Hector Meadus, Mrs. Isaac Holloway, Joyce Brown, Edgar Holloway, Miss Yvonne Holloway, Mr. Lindo Meadus, Stella Tucker, Clyde Meadus. Celebrating October birthdays are: Mrs. Gilbert King, Mrs. Alice King, Mrs. Harold Tucker, Mrs. Alice Toope, Miss Audrey Tucker, Mr. Chesley Brown, Mr. Llloyd Brown, Mr. Allan Tucker, Mrs. Lester Grandy, Donald King, and Terry Robbins who will be 3 years old on October 19.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Alwin Price and daughter Darlene have returned home from Windsor where Mr. Price had been employed all summer.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Robbins are home from Toronto where they vacationed this summer.
  • Miss Rebecca Squires will soon be leaving here to spend the winter months with Harrison Lambert and family at Hatchet Cove.
  • Isaac, Edgar and Melvin Holloway have returned home from Twillingate where they have spent the past 3 months fishing.
  • A birthday party was held at the home of Mrs. Harold Tucker and September 25 for her mother-in-law Mrs. Silas Tucker who celebrated her 76th. Those in attendance were her two daughters Mrs. Wm. King and Mrs. Isaac Holloway, Mrs. Alphaeus King, Mrs. Wm. Robbins , Mrs. Gilbert King, Mrs. Otto King, Mrs. Chesley Brown, Mrs. Calvert Meadus, Mrs. Allan Tucker and Miss Rebecca Squires. An enjoyable time was had by all.
  • Mrs. David Benson is at the Walwyn Hospital and Mrs. Doris Hillyard is at the General. Their many friends wish them both speedy recoveries.
  • Visitors to Mrs. Eliab Robbins recently were:- Audrey and Austin Hynes (Random Guardian owners), her brother Ray and family, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Adey (her mom and dad) all of Clarenville; also her aunt and uncle Mr. and Mrs. Ray Humby and their two daughters, Morley’s Siding.
  • Congratulations are sent to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Adey, Clarenville who celebrate their wedding anniversary on November 3rd and to Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Robbins who celebrate theirs on November 13. Greetings from Eliab, Minnie and family.

 

Page 38 – Long Beach

  • A stork shower was held on October 16 for Mrs. Howard Vey. An enjoyable evening was spent playing cards and bingo after which lunch was served. Gifts were opened by Mrs. Myrna Vey and cards read by Mrs. Lily Avery.
  • Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. A. Avery on the birth of their son at the Grace Hospital in St. John’s.
  • A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Peddle, Hodge’s Cove at the Walwyn Hospital.
  • Roy Vey has left for Toronto where he is employed.
  • Mrs. Eileen Avery was the winner of a $500.00 prize at a bingo game in Clarenville recently.
  • On October 11 at the Anglican Church in Little Heart’s Ease, Beulah Dodge and Wilson Avery of Long Beach were united in Holy Matrimony. The bride looked beautiful in a short length bridal gown as she was escorted to the altar by Mr. Sam Martin. The duties of best man were preformed by Eldred Avery and Laura Martin was maid of honour. Mrs. Lily Avery was the organist. Both Rev. M. Boutcher of the Anglican Church and Rev. Parsons of the United Church, conducted the ceremony. The reception was held at the U.C. School, Long Beach.

 

Page 40 – Hillview

  • Friends of Mrs. Leah Stanford, Hillview were sorry to hear that she had to enter the Walwyn Hospital She has since been released and a speedy recovery is wished to her from all her friends.
  • Mr. Samuel Churchill has been ill for some time. Get well wishes are also extended to him from his friends.
  • Mrs. Naomi Price celebrated her birthday recently. May she live to enjoy many more. Greetings from the Smiths.
  • Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. James Smith, Southport who celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary on October 3. Greeting s come from their son Lawrence, Churchill Falls, daughter-in-law and six grandchildren, Southport.
  • Passed peacefully away at his home in Little Heart’s Ease on October 4, Michael Shaw aged 79 years and 9 months. He leaves to mourn one son Leo with whom he resided, 5 daughters Mary, St. John’s, Kathleen Mrs. Peter Reddigan, Rita Mrs. Leo Ryan, Buchans, Minnie Mrs. Clyde Powell, Halifax, Anastastia Mrs. John E. Spivey, Ohio, USA; 3 brothers William and Peter, Little Heart’s Ease, Daniel, Everett USA and one sister Katherine, Mrs. Patrick Seaward of Gooseberry Cove, 22 grandchildren, 1 nephew and 3 nieces. The funeral, one of the largest to be witnessed, took place from the R.C. Church at Little Heart’s Ease with Rev. Father Mann accompanied by 3 altar boys conducting the service. Rev. Father Mann spoke inspiring words to the congregation. People from every settlement in Random as well as from Clarenville, Shoal Harbour and Milton attended the funeral to pay their respects to one who was well liked by all who knew him. Sincere sympathy goes to the relatives in the loss of a dear father and brother.
  • Mr. Elias Dinney, Deer Lake celebrated his 82nd birthday on October 2nd. Greetings from his daughter Mrs. Samuel Baker, North West Brook.
  • Passed peacefully away at her home in Caplin Cove on September 23 after a lingering illness, Emily Ann, wife of Ebenezer Whalen at the age of 62. A numerous amount of wreaths and sprays were carried into the church on the 25th of September for the funeral at Wesley United Church which was largely attended. The funeral service was the first from the church and was conducted by Rev. Morley Boutcher, Anglican priest of Random Mission. Mrs. Whalen leaves to mourn besides her husband, 3 sons Hedley, Stanley and Wm. of Caplin Cove; 3 daughters Ethel Mrs. Wm. Jacobs, Little Heart’s Ease, Irene Mrs. Roy Critch, Hillview, and Marcella Mrs. Geo. Hillyard, St. Jones, 3 brothers Eli and Albert Drodge and Nicholas Vey, all of Little Heart’s Ease, one sister Mrs. Mary Hussey, Port de Grave, now residing in Toronto, and 22 grandchildren.
  • Everyone was saddened to learn of the death of Mrs. Whalen, Caplin Cove. She was the mother of Mrs. George Hillyard of this community.
  • Mrs. Laurence Hillyard has returned home after spending sometime with her father at Charlottetown during his illness. We are happy to learn he is now doing well. Laurence is working at Churchill Falls.
  • A warm welcome is extended to the new minister Mr. Clark and his family and to our teacher Miss Vivian March from Green’s Harbour.
  • Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert King who celebrated their wedding anniversary on October 12th.
  • Howard Meadus celebrates his birthday on October 15th.
