- Mrs. Frank Norris who was a patient at the General Hospital for sometime is now home again.
- Harvey Brown is presently at Churchill Falls where he is employed.
- Claude Butt has returned home from Churchill Falls where he had spent some time.
- Mr. Frank Norris accompanied by Gerald, spent a week in St. John’s visiting friends.
- Mrs. Willian Smith and Mrs. S. Brace have returned from the General Hospital where they were both patients. Mrs. Smith underwent surgery on her foot while there.
- Visitors: Mr. and Mrs. Herb Norris, Deer Lake; Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Critch, Deer Lake, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Goodyear, Corner Brook; Mrs. Mark Vatus, Swift Current; Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Crocher, Swift Current; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Granter; Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Luscombe; Mr. and Mrs. George Chapell; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Harmen; Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Snow; Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Baker and family Elaine, Patsy, Calvin, and Gladys spent time with her sister at North Harbour.
- Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Cooper have moved to Stephenville to live with their daughter.
- Verna and Valerie Baker visited relatives at Deer Lake.
- Mr. and Mrs. Roland Brenton celebrated their wedding anniversary on August 2.
- Mrs. Brenton also spent some time in the hospital in St. John’s.
- Mr. Reuben Bursey is a patient at the hospital in Gander where she underwent surgery.
- Eugene Smith is in Churchill Falls where he has employement.
- Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Brown and daughter Sherry visited Mr. Brown’s parents Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Brown. Mrs. Samuel Brown visited her people at Winterton. She was accompanied by Daphne, Verlie and Marjorie.
- On August 30th the marriage of Karen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Norris to Mr. Gene Williams took place at Elim Tabernacle Pentecostal Church, St. John’s. The ceremony was performed by Pastor R.A. Callahan. The bride was given in marriage by her father and attended by her sister Jeanette as maid of honour and Junetta McCall as bridesmaid. The groom was attended by his brothers Harris as Best man and Eddie as usher. A reception at Kenmount Hotel followed.
Page 38 – Hatchet Cove
- Mrs. Belinda Robbins celebrated her 94th birthday on the 7th. Her friends and relatives gathered at her home and enjoyed a cup of tea.
- A surprise party was held for Malcolm Lambert on September 12 when he celebrated his 60th Over 30 guests attended and a very enjoyable time was had by all at the party.
- Hatchet Cove was the scene of a very pretty wedding on September 10 when Alice, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nath Smith became the bride of James, son of Mr. and Mrs. Silas Avery, Southport. The bride was given in marriage by her father. She was attended by her sister Myra as maid of honour. The best man was Lloyd Avery, cousin of the groom. A reception at the home of the bride followed.
Page 41 – Hillview
- Mrs. Maggie Churchill is well and able to be around again after being ill for some time. She visited relatives and friends in Glovertown.
- Birthday greetings to Mrs. Marion Martin, Clarenville. The greetings come from your two sisters Mrs. Martha Strowbridge and Mrs. Emma Spurrell.
- There are quite a few people in Hillview who are celebrating birthday that are under 70 years of age. May they all enjoy many more.
- Mr. Mayard Goodland from Elliston is principal in the school here. Miss Bernetta Wiseman from Lushes Bight and Mrs. Vera Lamber, Hillview teach in the lower rooms. We hope that the two new teachers will be happy and content here. It is not too easy a task to train children, especially beginners.
- Patsy Spurrell, Butter Cove, who sells The Random Guardian, is celebrating her birthday. Happy birthday Patsy.
- Mr. and Mrs. Harry Buckley, Botwood are visiting her brothers in Hillview.
- Mrs. Arthur Spurrell, Butter Cove attended the nursing graduation of her niece Miss Alena Coady, daughter of Staff Sergeant Hugh and Mrs. Coady, St. John’s.
- Mrs. Laura Miller, St. John’s visited her sister Mrs. Naomi Price.
- Miss Sandra Frost spent the weekend with her parents. She is a student nurse at the Grace Hospital.
- The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Vey was christened in the U.C. on Sunday, September 15th and was given the name of Marilyn Gale.
- Visitors: Mr. and Mrs. Harry Buckley; Mr. and Mrs. Claude Vokey. The Vokeys have built a summer home here and spend many weekends and holidays here. They also spent some time with Mrs. Vokey’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Stoyles.
- Mr. Eliol Baker is recovering after spending some time in Walwyn Hospital.
- Mrs. Jacob Smith has been transferred to the General Hospital where she will undergo surgery. Get well wishes go to her from friends in Hillview.
Page 42 – St Jones Within
- Mr. and Mrs. John Toope and family, Toronto were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Toope recently. They also had their daughter Gladys home on holidays from St. John’s where she is employed.
- Congratulations to Yvonne Halloway and Joyce Brown who were successful in their grade nine exams.
- Edison Halloway who is with the RCAF is vacationing with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Halloway.
- Joan Halloway spent a holiday with Mrs. Ern Whalen of Clarenville.
- Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. George Brown, the proud parents of a baby boy born on his great grand-father’s birthday (Stephen Halloway). The boy was given the name of Russell Stephen. He came into this world at the Walwyn Hospital.
- Mrs. Annie Butt and family of Hickman’s Harbour spent a holiday with Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Halloway.
- The minister on the Hillview Pastoral Charge this year is Rev. Clarke who succeeds Rev. Arleigh Peddle.
- Mrs. David Tucker and family holidayed with her sister Mrs. John Duffett of Catralina.
- Mrs. Albert Benson is spending a holiday with her daughter, Mrs. Wilson Price of Windsor.
- Faye Robbins celebrated her 10th birthday on August 21. Colleen Robbins had her 6th birthday on August 24th.
- Visitors here recently were Mr. and Mrs. Munden Reid and family, Gander were guests of Mr. Boyd King; Mr. and Mrs. Levi Smith, Southport and Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Hunt, Toronto were guests of Mrs. Wesley King. Baby Roger King spent a few days at the Walwyn Hospital. Mr. Wesley King is now employed in Labrador City. Randolph Price, Windsor holidayed with his grandmother Mrs. Albert Benson; Mrs. Dorothy Young, Deer Lake was the guest of Mrs. Reuben Toope.
- Birthday greetings are sent to Miss Rebecca Squires who will be 68 on the 14th of September and to Mr. Alphaeus King on his 70th birthday on the same day.
