Queen’s Cove Notes

National Convention

The main topic of conversation here at present is the National Convention. Our people are wondering whether the Ottawa delegation will return in time so that the Convention will convene and get the necessary material to England so that a plebiscite will be possible this coming Fall.

Cabot Highway

Since the opening of the Cabot Highway many people are taking the advantage of enjoying a trip from St. John’s and many places in Conception Bay and the south side of Trinity Bay to Clarenville, Bonavista and Terrenceville. The building of this highway will prove a great boon to this part of the country as trade will be greatly increased. Also it would prove a great benefit to our people who live in isolated communities if there were secondary roads built to connect with the Cabot Highwav so that they would get their fish and other products to St. John’s without very much inconvenience, such as the people of Grates Cove, Bay de Verde and other places in Conception Bay are enjoying at present.

Three years ago several thousand dollars were spent on a road extending from Queen’s Cove to South Port. If several more thousands were spent this year the road would be put in a very good condition from Queen’s Cove to Long Beach, a distance of five or six miles, then our people would have less difficulty getting to and from the Walwyn Hospital at Come By Chance.

Personals

Relief Inspector C. M. Button and his wife accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Smith of South Port motored to New Belbourne, Trinity Bay and St. John’s on July 13. Mr. and Mrs. Button returned by Cabot Highway on the 16th and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Smith returned by train on the 20th.

Mr. David Benson of Hillview who has been for years running a passenger ferry on the south west arm has purchased a new boat which will render better and more up to date service for the convenience of the public.

Mrs. Max Davis and family of Windsor are spending their holidays with Mrs. Davis’ parents Mr. and Mrs. Ben Smith of Gooseberry Cove.

Mr. and Mrs. Don Goobie and Edward Barbour of St. John’s are at present spending a holiday with Inspector and Mrs. Button of Queens’ Cove.

Mrs. Dodge of Detroit is spending a vacation with relatives at Queen’s Cove and Island Cove.

Ern Frost, Taxi driver, recently motored to St. John’s by way of the Cabot Highway.

Employment

A large number of our men prosecute the Labrador fishery each year and encouraging news has come from the coast that fishing is very good.

Most of our young men who are yearly employed at Bowater’s Camps at Corner Brook and Deer Lake are spending the summer months at home but will be returning again to take up duties sometime in August or early September.Since returning home several young men who have recently married and intend marrying are constructing new homes and one can hear the hammer in the early hours of morning.

Good Hay Crops This Year

The weather has been very warm and dry the past few weeks and farmers are worried over their crops. Although in spite of dry weather there will be good hay crops in this vicinity this season.
