Queen’s Cove
Albert House, Avalon Gosse, and Cecil Spurrell, left by last Wednesday night’s train for Deer Lake where they will be engaged in the lumber woods.
Between forty-five and fifty men landed here on Monday from the nearby settlements enroute to Terra Nova, Deer Lake and Badger to work in the woods.
Mrs. Rhoda Gosse has been ill for the past two weeks, and, we are glad to report that she is on the road to recovery again.
Mrs. Walter Benson, Bishop’s Falls, arrived by Sunday’s train to visit her mother Mrs. Rhoda Gosse.
Kenneth Smith of Southport spent Saturday night here enroute to St. John’s on business.
Miss Mary Smith, who is attending the Memorial University College at St. John’s, returned to the city on Sunday after spending three weeks’ vacation with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Smith of Southport.
Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Button spent New Year at Southport, and were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Smith. Arthur Spurrell of Butter Cove, and who has recently returned home from England after serving six years with the Royal Navy, spent Tuesday night here. He left for St. John’s by Wednesday morning’s train.
Nathan Whalen of Caplin Cove, spent Tuesday night here enroute to St. John’s on business. He has just returned from Overseas, having spent six years with the Royal Navy.
C. M. Button left by Wednesday morning’s train for St. John’s on official business.
William Upshall and family, who were spending their Christmas holidays with Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Butt, have returned to the city.
Congratulations are being extended to Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Avery of Southport on the birth of a baby girl on Dec. 11. 1945, and to Mr. and Mrs. Moses Spurrell of Southport on the birth of twin girls on Christmas Day.
The Society of United Fishermen of Butter Cove, Gooseberry Cove and Southport held their annual parade on New Year’s Day. They left their hall on the Cross Roads at eleven o’clock and paraded to Butter Cove, where they stopped for recess, then back to Southport for dinner after which they paraded back to the Cross Roads, to St. Alban’s church, where they attended divine service, and given an inspiring address by their minister, the Rev. M. Jones. A soup supper, tea, and dance was held at night.
Wedding Bells
Avery – Smith
At St. Alban’s Church, Cross Roads, the marriage took place at 3.30 p.m., on Jan. 2, of Mary Maria, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Smith of Gooseberry Cove, to Ronald Lloyd, son of Mrs. Fanny and the late James Avery of Southport. The bride, who was given in marriage by Mr. C. M. Button, looked charming in the traditional wedding gown of white satin with over skirt of white marquisite embossed with white satin roses, and a floor length veil, which was held in place by a coronet of seeded pearls, and carried a bouquet of multi-coloured flowers. The bride was attended by the groom’s sister-in-law, Mrs. Silas Avery, who wore a floor length gown of pink georgette and shoulder length veil, and Miss Eliza Smith, cousin of the bride, who wore a blue satin gown with an overskirt of marquisite and headdress to match. They both carried bouquets of multi-coloured flowers.
The groom was attended by his brother, Silas, as best man and Willis Smith as usher. The reception was held at the home of the groom. That they may live to enjoy many years of wedded bliss is the wish of their many friends.
