NOTE FROM OUR CORRESPONDENTS

Queen’s Cove

Quite a pleasant- evening was spent at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Stoyles. Northern Bight Station, on Wednesday, January 23, where a number of friends had assembled to extend Happy Birthday greeting to their son Alfred James. Amongst those present were members of the American Repeater Station, who are stationed at Shoal Harbour.

Captain Ralph Smith of Hodge’s Cove, and who is Master of the E. M. A. Frampton, left for St. John’s oil Monday’s train and returned home again last night. Capt. Smith is a veteran of World War II, having served in the Merchant Navy, and since then has made the sailing of the seas his career, and can tell many interesting tales, both grim and humorous. Long life to you, Captain!

Lester Stringer, who has just returned from Overseas, left for St. John’s on Monday’s train. Leslie served in the Senior Service.

Alec Peddle, who left for St. John’s on Monday’s train, returned again last night.

Lester Stoyles, Northern Bight Station, who recently returned from Scotland, went to St. John’s on Friday’s train; he returned again on Saturday night.

William Adey, representative for Confederation Life Insurance Co., Clarenville, visited Northern Bight on business recently.

Miss Doris Vey, Long Beach, has accepted a position as Teacher in the United School, Musgravetown. This is Miss Vey’s first time teaching, and we wish her every success and happiness in her new undertaking.

Mr. and Mrs. Elisha Gregory spent Sunday at Goobie’s visiting their daughter, Mrs. Allan Goobie friends.

Ern Avery, Grates Cove, and James Churchill, Hillview, paid a visit to Queen’s Cove Sunday. Mr. Avery is spending a holiday with his sister, Miss Miriam Avery, Hillview.

W.K. Stoyles, St. John’s, is visiting relatives and friends at Hillview.

Cecil Spurrell arrived home Sunday from Deer Lake. He is on the sick list and was taken by his father, Abram Spurrell to the Walwyn Hospital, Come-by-Chance, today. He is suffering from a cold. We hope to see him around again soon.

Raymond Vey, Long Beach, arrived home from overseas last night. Raymond was in the Royal Navy, and receives his final discharge in March, after which he will take a course in Electrical Engineering. May success be yours, Raymond.

James Vey spent Monday night here, having come from Long Beach to meet his son, Raymond.

Mrs. James Jacobs and Miss Agnes Goobie are confined to their homes through illness; speedy recovery to you both.

Word has been received recently from Harvey Gregory of this place who is now working with the Nfld. Engineering and Construction Co. Ltd., at Belleoram. His wife and son moved to Corner Brook for the winter. We miss them, and a letter from Harvey was most welcome.

Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Butt spent Sunday in Hillview and were the quests of Mr. and Mrs. James Churchill.

William Peddle Sr. and Alec Peddle of Hodge’s Cove left by Sunday’s express for Walwyn Hospital, Come-By-Chance, to receive medical attention.

William Goobie of this place has recently returned from St. John’s where he purchased a horse.

Moses Martin and Eli Drodge of Little Hearts Ease, were here on Sunday, enroute to St. John’s.

Robert Smith and son Eddie of Island Cove visited here Tuesday.

Quite a number of people from Caplin Cove, Hodge’s Cove and Long Beach have been here the last few days, in search of Molasses, none being obtainable in their own settlements.

We are glad to report that Cecil Spurrell, who had to return from Deer Lake because of illness, is now on the mend.

Raymond Vey of Long Beach, who has recently returned from Overseas, left by Sunday’s express for St. John’s.

George Barfitt of Long Beach, who is first officer on the S.S. Norton, arrived in St. John’s a few days ago. Clarence Vey, stepbrother to George, is serving on the same ship.

Loyal Drover and John Peddle of Hodge’s Cove left by Saturday night’s express for Terra Nova to work in the woods.

Congratulations are extended to Mr. and Mrs. Loyal Drover, on the birth of a son recently. Baby was born at the Walwyn Hospital, Come-By-Chance.

Eugene Green, of Caplin Cove, visited here a few days ago. Eugene served Overseas with the 166th Regiment, whilst in England married an English girl, who is now living in Caplin Cove with him, and we are glad to say that she is quite happy.

The death occurred last week at Butter Cove of Mrs. Uriah Spurrell. Her sons, David and Robert, who were away working in the woods at Terra Nova, arrived just in time to attend the funeral.

Stephen Smith of Hodge’s Cove arrived here in motor boat on Saturday, and took the following passengers to Southport: Donald Balsam, William Spurrell, David Spurrell and Robert Spurrell; to Hodge’s Cove, the following who had returned from Clarenville, where they had been employed on the Dock: Nathan Smith, Eleazor Hiscock, Dan Balsom, Simeon Drodge, James Peddle and Lewis Seaward; to Island Cove: Thomas Smith.
