Note: according to the family oral history – John could not get galvanized nails so he had to use iron nails in the construction of the Silver Spray. He soon became concerned about the action of the salt water on these nails and put the vessel ashore. However, his son, George, retrieved her from the mud flats, re-nailed her with galvanized nails, and sailed her to Labrador and returned with a full load of fish.
On June 2, 1897 there was a note about the Silver Spray in the Evening Telegram: The schooner Silver Spray is at present here from Random, T.B. She is a new schooner of about 45 tons, built this past winter by Mr. John Vey, who is owner and master. The vessel is of good symmetry, and sailed well on the passage here.
