Bramwell Drodge and William Stringer

Newfoundland loggers are a busy lot, but they will still willingly make time to help the weak and the needy. The following story is just one example.

Bramwell Drodge, Little Heart’s Ease, and William Stringer, Caplin Cove, sawed down an old birch stump which was interfering with their work at Roy Peddle’s operation in the Gambo area. Inside the stump they discovered the nest of a mother woodpecker and her three nestlings which were only a few days old.

The loggers set the stump back again to its original position, and secured it there so that it would not blow down. Each morning and evening they checked the nest as they passed along to make sure that the mother bird and her family were quite contented. Sometime later the young birds were seen flying about in the vicinity of the nest.

Although Bram and Bill were at work salvaging burnt-over timber, and the charcoal they picked up in the course of a day’s labour, did nothing to improve their good looks, the woodpecker and her brood appeared to be most grateful. The News-Log joins with their many friends in congratulating Bram and Bill on their thoughtfulness in the matter.
