Page 11 – Tragedy on the TCH
Murdock Baker of Hillview, a 19 year old clerical student attending the Vocational School, was killed on February 15th when the car in which he was a passenger turned over on the Trans Canada Highway near Clarenville. The car was owned and driven by Mr. Frank Price also of Hillview, who is still a patient in hospital. Wavy Lou Baker, sister of the victim, Gwen Manning of Epworth, who is teaching at Hillview and Patsy Snook of Sunnyside were also taken to hospital following the accident, suffering from cuts, bruises and lacerations. Patsy Snook has since been released.
Murdock was a bursary student and attended Horwood High for two years. He was well known and liked by students and teachers and he was also on the hockey team.
The funeral was conducted by Mr. Ernest Parsons – Hillview United Church was largely attended with many of the teachers and students of Horwood High and students and Instructors of the Vocational School present. We extend our deepest sympathy to the members of his family.

Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Avery of Long Beach are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Bertha Yvonne, to Oliver, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alphaeus Greening of Clarenville.
Page 50 – Hillview
- A very pretty wedding took place on December 27th of Delores Vey of Hillview and Ralph Turner of Happy Adventure. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Ernest Parsons. Marilyn, sister of the bride, was maid of honour and bridesmaids were Elaine Vey and Gladys Frost. Flower girl and train bearer was Lovetta Vey, niece of the bride. Delores was given in marriage by her brother Chester. Mr. Ben Lane was best man assisted by Stanley Turner and Clyde Vey. The reception was held in the Orange Hall. Band music for the dance was supplied from Clarenville. Ralph and Delores have taken up residence in Labrador city. We extend best wishes.
- Guests present at the home of Mrs. Mildred Vey were Mr. Owen Turner, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Turner and two nieces; Mrs. Annie Vey and daughter Elaine; Mr. Ben Lane and Mr. Stanley Turner. Ralph, Delores and Marilyn were home to spend Christmas as well as the occasion of the wedding. Upon returning to Labrador City Marilyn was accompanied by her brother Clyde who is working at Labrador City.
- Born to Mr. and Mrs. Lester Vey, a son on December 31st named Donald Hayward
Page 51 – Hatchet Cove
- On January 19th a shower was held for Mrs. Raymon Robbins at the home of Mrs. Benoni Robbins of Hatchet Cove. Gifts were opened by Mrs. Benoni Robbins and the cards were read by Mrs. Benjamin Robbins. A very enjoyable evening was spent by all.
- Ruby Bishop returned to the General Hospital for further treatment.
- The LOBA of Hillview and Hatchet Cove visited the home of Mrs. Eliah Blundon on January 18th.
- Nelson Lambert returned to Badger where he is employed with Prince Pulp and Paper Co.
