Page 55 – North West Brook

  • On Friday, June 23, Sandra King of Happy Adventure became the bride of Nelson Soper. The bride was attended by Blanche Drodge of Little Heart’s Ease, and Marie Soper, sister of the groom. The groom was assisted by David Soper, brother of the groom and Fred Bursey. The marriage was at the United Church with Rev. Paddle officiating. The reception was held at the United Church School.
  • The Pentecostal Church at North West Brook was the scene of a very pretty wedding on June 30, when Beverley Norris, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Norris became the bride of Lorne Hollett of Norris Arm North. The bride was given in marriage by her father. She was attended by her sisters Karen as maid of honor and Jeannetta as bridesmaid; Lynne as maiden of honor, with Marlene Hollett, niece of the groom as junior bridesmaid. The groom was assisted by his brother, Roy, as best man and brother-in-law, Arthur Regular as usher. The reception was held at the Pentecostal School. Out-of-town guests included: Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hollett and family of Botwood, Mrs. Phoebe Hollett of Botwood and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Regular and family of Botwood, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Norris of Glenwood, Mr. and Mrs. Austin Hollett of Gander, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Chafe of Gander, Mr. and Mrs. E.J. Benson, Mr. and Mrs. Eric Benson of St. John’s, Mrs. Ellis Goodyear of Deer Lake, Mrs. Arthur Bowers of Windsor, Mrs. Ernest Crocker and family of Swift Current.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Charles Churchill of Grand Falls recently were the guest of Mr. and Mrs. E.J. Soper; also Mr. Rendell of Bishop’s Falls and Eliza Price of Bishop’s Falls.
  • Mr. and Mrs. William Bursey of Corner Brook recently visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Bursey.
  • Away on holidays were: Rosalie Keats to St. John’s, Mr. and Mrs. John Vivian attended Camp Emmanuel at Long Pond, Mr. and Mrs. George Soper at Bishop’s Falls, Joyce Bursey to Windsor, Mrs. Balsam and Judy Snelgrove to Chapel Arm and St. John’s, Mrs. Joseph Warren and son Terry to the mainland, Jeannetta Norris and Gladys Baker at Camp Emmanuel, Mr. and Mrs. John Norris to Grand Falls, Mr. and Mrs. John Butt to St. John’s, Pastor and Mrs. R.A.   • Visitors at Mr. and Mrs. William Smith’s were : Mr. and Mrs. Frank Whelan of St. John’s, Mr and Mrs. Stringer of Milton, Mr. and Mrs. Mercer and family and Mr. Mercer’s brother of Toronto.
  • Mrs. Eugene Smith’s parents of Swift Current recently visited her as well as her sister Beulah from St. John’s.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Brown of Winterton recently visited his parents Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Brown.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Frank Norris and Gerald recently spent a weekend as guests of Mr. and Mrs. Eric Benson at their cabin at Whitborne.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Fred Granter of Deer Lake were recently the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Baker.
  • Eugene Smith has returned home from Churchill Falls where he was employed. Donald Bursey is now home from Churchill Falls on vacation after spending six months there. Mr. Edgar Bursey has gone to Churchill Falls where he will be employed.
  • Mrs. Hannah Snelgrove recently spent some time in hospital.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Edward Soper of St. John’s recently visited his parents Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Soper.
  • A ‘stork shower’ was held recently for Mrs. Amos Snelgrove at her home. Nineteen ladies attended. The gifts were opened by Mrs. Cordell Warren and cards were read by Mrs. Vallance Butt. Lunch was served and a good time was had by all.
  • Karen Norris who is employed in St. John’s recently spent two weeks holidays at home with her parents. She also spent a few days at Deer Lake.

 

Page 60 – Queen’s Cove

  • Mr. and Mrs. Joshua Butt and son Dundley motored here from Sarasota, Florida and are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. George Butt. He also visited his brother Mr. Andrew Butt at North West Brook, and his sister Mrs. Annie Martin.
  • Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Halisted Gosse are Mrs. Gosse’s sister and her husband. Mr. and Mrs. Spiro Tamo and family from Rexdale, Ontario. Also Mrs. Gosse’s mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Robbins from Burlington, Ontario.
  • A going-away party was held for Mrs. Maud Burton and Mrs. Florence Snow at the home of their sister Mrs. Delilah Howse. Gifts were opened by Mrs. Nellie Smith. Cards were read by Mrs. Lena Goobie.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Austin Currigan are visiting here, and are the guests of Mrs. Currigan’s sister, Mrs. William Goobie. Also visiting Mr. and Mrs. William Goobie are her brothers Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Churchill, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Churchill and family, Mr. and Mrs. John Churchill and daughter Marie, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Churchill, all of Grand Falls. Mr. and Mrs. Simon Churchill from Bonavista, and her son and daughter-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Goobie and son Rickey.

  • Infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Goobie was christened on July 9, by Rev. Paddle, and was given the name ‘Roy Keith’.
  • Mr. and Mrs. William Gregory are visiting Mrs. Gregory’s daughter at Sydney.
  • Mrs. John Goobie and Mrs. Albert Howse and sons Max and Paul visitied friends and relatives at St. John’s.
  • Mr. Ern Avery has returned from Churchill Fall where he was employed.

  • Barry and George Smith, Blaketown spent the summer holidays with their grandparents.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Wm. H. Dodge, Little Heart’s Ease, spent three weeks visiting their sons in Toronto. They were accompanied by their daughter, Ivy.
  • Mrs. Mildred Vey has returned to Labrador City after visiting her sons and friends. Mr. and Mrs. Eli Loder and son Garry, Dunville, Placentia Bay spent a few days visiting relatives and friends.
  • Mrs. Naomi Price visited friends at Gander.
  • Mrs. May Loder is visiting her son Hedley in Toronto. She is accompanied by her grand-daughters, Sylvia Critch.
  • Deepest sympathy is extended to Mr. and Mrs. Levi Loder, North Harbour, P.B., on the tragic loss of their son recently.
  • Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Hector Ploughman, Clarenville on the occasion of their ninth wedding anniversary August 9.

 

Hatchet Cove

  • Congratulations are extended to Mr. Eleazor Robbins who celebrated his 95th birthday on August 7th.
  • Wedding anniversaries – Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Robbins, their 2nd on August 12th; Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Robbins, their 7th on August 13th.
  • A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. George Lambert at the Walwyn Hospital on August 11th.
  • Alex Lambert was a patient at the Walwyn Hospital for a few days and is now home waiting for a bed at the General Hospital, St. John’s.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Robbins and family have taken up residence at Marystown, where he will be teaching for the coming year.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Robbins and family are spending a few weeks with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Benomi Robbins. Also visiting Mr. and Mrs. Robbins this summer was Mrs. Elizabeth Robbins from the mainland, and Mrs. Mary Blundon from Gander.
  • Mrs. Cecil Bishop and family spent a week with her parents at Bishop’s Cove.
  • Mrs. Freeman Curtis and family are spending a few days with her husband’s parents at Virgin Arm.
  • Mr. and Mrs. James Peddle, Clarenville, are spending a few days with Mr. and Mrs. Eliah Blundon. Mrs. Peddle is Mrs. Blundon’s sister.
  • Mrs. John Bishop is leaving for Anchor Point this week to spend a few days with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Elijah Genge.
  • Muriel Parsons and children spent a few days with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Bishop.
  • A baby shower was held at the home of Mrs. Harvey Price on Wednesday, the 16th. The presents were opened by Lorraine Robbins, and cards were read by Velma Lambert.
  • A farewell party was held at the home of Mrs. Roy Smith for Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Robbins.

 

Page 67 – Deep Bight

Wedding – a very pretty wedding took place in the United Church at Little Heart’s Ease on July 14th, when Evelyn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Whalen, Caplin Cove, became the bride of Leslie, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Avery of Deep Bight.

The double-ring ceremony was performed by Mr. Edison Wiltshire of Port Union. The bride wore a floor-length white satin gown, and carried a bouquet of pink and white carnations. Given in marriage by her father, she was attended by her sister-in-law, Bernice Whalen, as Maid of Honor, with Melnie Drodge of Little Heart’s Ease and Linda Stringer of Caplin Cove as bridesmaids. The Maid of Honor wore a lemon yellow satin dress with veil and bouquet to match. The bridesmaids wore pink satin dresses with veil and bouquet to match.

The groom was assisted by Max Whalen, brother of the bride, as best man. Eric Avery of Deep Bight, and Roy Drodge of Little Heart’s Ease were ushers. Bradford Drodge was ring bearter, and Sandra Avery was flower girl.

The reception was held at the Mount Joy L.O.L. at Little Heart’s Ease.

Out-of-town guests were: Mr. and Mrs. William Avery, St. John’s; Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Barrett, Mrs. Gerald Barrett, and Miss Gloria Squires, all from Old Perlican.
