Southwest Arm War Memorial Fund

The Southwest Arm Historical Society continue to receive contributions to the War Memorial.

The Society has met with Family Memorials of St. John’s and are now receiving more detailed plans for the war memorial. Our goal is to ensure that all WWI and WWII veteran names from Southwest Arm will be engraved on the stones, with special recognition to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Others who served since the world wars will also be recognized.

An application has been filed with the Commemorative Partnerships Program, Veterans Affairs Canada in hopes of securing additional funds that will augment the donations. It is our objective to construct a memorial that all residents of the Southwest Arm area will be proud of. It will be a place that will provide moments of reflection on those men and women who served and will be a focal point for our military history.

An article that appeared in the ‘Evening Advocate’ newspaper titled “Gooseberry Cove, Random Collects for War Memorial for Heroes” highlights the importance of all contributions that ranged from 10 cents to $10.00 in 1919. Today you can see the results of this cooperative effort by individuals outside the Anglican Church at Gooseberry Cove where you can view the cenotaph.

You can make your donation in memory of an individual(s) who served or in memory of a loved one(s) that have passed.

E-transfers can be sent to andrewdpeddle@eastlink.ca or donations mailed to
